    Engineering Phonon Polaritons in van der Waals Heterostructures to Enhance In-Plane Optical Anisotropy

    Van der Waals heterostructures assembled from layers of 2D materials have attracted considerable interest due to their novel optical and electrical properties. Here we report a scattering-type scanning near field optical microscopy study of hexagonal boron nitride on black phosphorous (h-BN/BP) heterostructures, demonstrating the first direct observation of in-plane anisotropic phonon polariton modes in vdW heterostructures. Strikingly, the measured in-plane optical anisotropy along armchair and zigzag crystal axes exceeds the ratio of refractive indices of BP in the x-y plane. We explain that this enhancement is due to the high confinement of the phonon polaritons in h-BN. We observe a maximum in-plane optical anisotropy of {\alpha}_max=1.25 in the 1405-1440 cm-1 frequency spectrum. These results provide new insights on the behavior of polaritons in vdW heterostructures, and the observed anisotropy enhancement paves the way to novel nanophotonic devices and to a new way to characterize optical anisotropy in thin films

    Introducing Berry phase gradients along the optical path via propagation-dependent polarization transformations

    Abstract As a classical or quantum system undergoes a cyclic evolution governed by slow change in its parameter space, it acquires a topological phase factor known as the geometric or Berry phase. One popular manifestation of this phenomenon is the Gouy phase which arises when the radius of curvature of the wavefront changes adiabatically in a cyclic manner, for e.g., when focused by a lens. Here, we report on a new manifestation of the Berry phase in 3D structured light which arises when its polarization state adiabatically evolves along the optical path. We show that such a peculiar evolution of angular momentum, which occurs under free space propagation, is accompanied by an accumulated phase shift that elegantly coincides with Berry's prediction. Unlike the conventional dynamic phase, which accumulates monotonically with propagation, the Berry phase observed here can be engineered on demand, thereby enabling new possibilities; such as spin-dependent spatial frequency shifts, and modified phase matching in resonators and nonlinear interactions. Our findings expand the laws of wave propagation and can be applied in optics and beyond

    Periprosthetic knee infection: treatment options

    Infection is one of the most catastrophic complication following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and represents the second most common cause of TKA failure. Treatment of a patient with periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) could require often costly and prolonged hospital stays, weeks or months of antibiotic therapy, and multiple surgical procedures. The best management is still highly debating, whereas many treatment options are available. These include suppressive antibiotics, arthroscopic irrigation and debridement, open debridement with insert exchange, single-stage reimplantation and two-stage reimplantation. The choice of the treatment depends on many variables, including integrity of implant, timing of the infection, host factors (age, health, immunologic status), virulence of the infecting organism and wishes of the patient.     Pharmacokinetics of ketamine and norketamine following intramuscular administration combined with dexmedetomidine in tigers (Panthera tigris)

    In zoo practice, for physical examination or medical procedure in captive tigers, chemical immobilization is needed and ketamine (KET) in association with sedatives is an option frequently used (Clark-Price et al., 2015). Aims of the study is the assessment of the pharmacokinetics of KET and its main metabolite, norketamine (NORKET), after its intramuscular administration in combination with dexmedetomidine in tigers.Nineteen adult captive tigers, from different zoos, were scheduled for periodic physical examination or diagnostic procedures at the Milan University facilities. All animals were administered with a combination of KET at 2 mg/kg and dexmedetomidine at 10 µg/kg, given intramuscularly through blowpipe darts. If necessary, tigers where re-administered with variable doses of KET and dexmedetomidine or other drugs. When animals were sufficiently sedated, blood samples were collected every 5-10 min for the time tigers were safely approachable. Nine animals were assigned to standard protocol group (KET 2 mg/kg and dexmedetomidine 10 µg/kg) and ten animals to non-standard protocol group (tigers administered with different doses of KET, 2 – 2.5 mg/kg, and dexmedetomidine 10 – 30 µg/kg or with any other necessary drug, such as titrate-to-effect propofol and isoflurane, respectively for anaesthesia induction and maintenance). Ketamine and NORKET were extracted from plasma according to a validated HPLC-UV method (Zonca et al., 2012). For pharmacokinetic assessment, KET and NORKET concentrations were analysed with a noncompartmental approach (Phoenix® 7.0, Pharsight). Differences in the pharmacokinetic parameters between groups were statistically analysed (SPSS 25.0, SPSS Inc.).This is the first study that evaluates the pharmacokinetics of KET and NORKET in tigers. Due to the harmful attitude of these animals, samples collection was limited to the period of sedation, a short time for a complete pharmacokinetic evaluation.
