The Interaction Of Multiple Convection Zones In A-type Stars
A-type stars have a complex internal structure with the possibility of
multiple convection zones. If not sufficiently separated, such zones will
interact through the convectively stable regions that lie between them. It is
therefore of interest to ask whether the typical conditions that exist within
such stars are such that these convections zones can ever be considered as
disjoint.
In this paper we present results from numerical simulations that help in
understanding how increasing the distance between the convectively unstable
regions are likely to interact through the stable region that separates them.

Emission Lines in the Spectrum of the 3He Star 3 Cen A
Emission in the 4d - 4f transitions of MnII (multiplet 13, 6122-6132 Ang), in
the 4f - 6g transitions of PII, and in 6149.5 Ang of HgII has been detected in
the spectrum of the helium weak star 3 Centauri A (B5 III-IVp). Weaker emission
from the same MnII multiplet is also seen in the hot, mild HgMn star 46 Aquila
(B9 III).It is suggested that the emission is of photospheric origin and may be
evidence for the stratification of manganese, phosphorus and mercury in the

Infiltration of fibrous preforms by a pure metal: Part V. Influence of preform compressibility
Infiltration by a pure matrix in the presence of preform deformation and partial matrix solidification is analyzed using a bounding approach for the preform rheology where solid metal is present. It is found, using parameters for the infiltration of short alumina fiber preforms by aluminum, that the two bounds are close in comparison to other factors of uncertainty in the prediction of infiltration rate. Using this approach, preform compression is shown to exert a significant influence on the infiltration rate for the system explored; in particular, the analysis shows the existence of an optimal value of applied pressure. Simplifications in the analysis are also presented, which yield fairly accurate results while easing their computation significantly
Using Cerebrospinal Fluid Biomarker Testing to Target Treatment to Patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Cost-Effectiveness Analysis
Objective Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers are shown to facilitate a risk identification of patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) into different risk levels of progression to Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Knowing a patient’s risk level provides an opportunity for earlier interventions, which could result in potential greater benefits. We assessed the cost effectiveness of the use of CSF biomarkers in MCI patients where the treatment decision was based on patients’ risk level.
Methods We developed a state-transition model to project lifetime quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) and costs for a cohort of 65-year-old MCI patients from a US societal perspective. We compared four test-and-treat strategies where the decision to treat was based on a patient’s risk level (low, intermediate, high) of progressing to AD with two strategies without testing, one where no patients were treated during the MCI phase and in the other all patients were treated. We performed deterministic and probabilistic sensitivity analyses to evaluate parameter uncertainty.
Results Testing and treating low-risk MCI patients was the most cost-effective strategy with an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of US18,900 and US$50,100 per QALY, respectively.
Conclusion Based on the best available evidence regarding the treatment effectiveness for MCI, this study suggests the potential value of performing CSF biomarker testing for early targeted treatments among MCI patients with a narrow range for the ICER
Liver-specific expression of the agouti gene in transgenic mice promotes liver carcinogenesis in the absence of obesity and diabetes
BACKGROUND: The agouti protein is a paracrine factor that is normally present in the skin of many species of mammals. Agouti regulates the switch between black and yellow hair pigmentation by signalling through the melanocortin 1 receptor (Mc1r) on melanocytes. Lethal yellow (A(y)) and viable yellow (A(vy)) are dominant regulatory mutations in the mouse agouti gene that cause the wild-type protein to be produced at abnormally high levels throughout the body. Mice harboring these mutations exhibit a pleiotropic syndrome characterized by yellow coat color, obesity, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, and increased susceptibility to hyperplasia and carcinogenesis in numerous tissues, including the liver. The goal of this research was to determine if ectopic expression of the agouti gene in the liver alone is sufficient to recapitulate any aspect of this syndrome. For this purpose, we generated lines of transgenic mice expressing high levels of agouti in the liver under the regulatory control of the albumin promoter. Expression levels of the agouti transgene in the liver were quantified by Northern blot analysis. Functional agouti protein in the liver of transgenic mice was assayed by its ability to inhibit binding of the α-melanocyte stimulating hormone (αMSH) to the Mc1r. Body weight, plasma insulin and blood glucose levels were analyzed in control and transgenic mice. Control and transgenic male mice were given a single intraperitoneal injection (10 mg/kg) of the hepatocellular carcinogen, diethylnitrosamine (DEN), at 15 days of age. Mice were euthanized at 36 or 40 weeks after DEN injection and the number of tumors per liver and total liver weights were recorded. RESULTS: The albumin-agouti transgene was expressed at high levels in the livers of mice and produced a functional agouti protein. Albumin-agouti transgenic mice had normal body weights and normal levels of blood glucose and plasma insulin, but responded to chemical initiation of the liver with an increased number of liver tumors compared to non-transgenic control mice. CONCLUSIONS: The data demonstrate that liver-specific expression of the agouti gene is not sufficient to induce obesity or diabetes, but, in the absence of these factors, agouti continues to promote hepatocellular carcinogenesis
Hermitian D-brane solutions
A low-energy background field solution describing D-membrane configurations
is constructed which is distinguished by the appearance of a Hermitian metric
on the internal space. This metric is composed of a number of independent
harmonic functions on the transverse space. Thus this construction generalizes
the usual harmonic superposition rule. The BPS bound of these solutions is
shown to be saturated indicating that they are supersymmetric. By means of

OPserver: interactive online-computations of opacities and radiative accelerations
Codes to compute mean opacities and radiative accelerations for arbitrary
chemical mixtures using the Opacity Project recently revised data have been
restructured in a client--server architecture and transcribed as a subroutine
library. This implementation increases efficiency in stellar modelling where
element stratification due to diffusion processes is depth dependent, and thus
requires repeated fast opacity reestimates. Three user modes are provided to
fit different computing environments, namely a web browser, a local workstation

Three very young HgMn stars in the Orion OB1 Association
We report the detection of three mercury-manganese stars in the Orion OB1
association. HD 37886 and BD-0 984 are in the approximately 1.7 million year
old Orion OB1b. HD 37492 is in the approximately 4.6 million year old Orion
OB1c. Orion OB1b is now the youngest cluster with known HgMn star members. This
places an observational upper limit on the time scale needed to produce the
chemical peculiarities seen in mercury-manganese stars, which should help in
the search for the cause or causes of the peculiar abundances in HgMn and other
