A note on the existence of the maximum likelihood estimate in variance components models

In the paper, the problem of the existence of the maximum likelihood estimate and the REML estimate in the variance components model is considered. Errors in the proof of Theorem 3.1 in the article of Demidenko and Massam (Sankhy\=a 61, 1999), giving a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of the maximum likelihood estimate in this model, are pointed out and corrected. A new proof of Theorem 3.4 in the Demidenko and Massam's article, concerning the existence of the REML estimate of variance components, is presented

Koniektura „wewnętrznego języka” w filozofii Johanna Gottfrieda Herdera

Der Artikel beschreibt das Konzept der nonverbalen Sprache der "inneren Wörter",  die ein wichtiges Element von Herders Theorie des Sprachursprungs ausmacht und leider von Forschern meistens übersehen wird. Der wichtigste Punkt der vorgestellten Interpretation wird die  Unterscheidung zwischen zwei Aspekten der kognitiven Funktion des Geistes sein, die in der Sinnlichkeit verkörpert sind und die Herder anstelle des klassischen Konzepts des Verstandes einführt: die Besonnenheit (identifizierende Aufmerksamkeit), die ikonische Zeichen in der Grundlage der Seele (fundus animae) kodiert und die Besinnung (reflektierende Aufmerksamkeit), die die von Besonnenheit geprägten Zeichen in innere Worte verwandelt. Die Besonnenheit kompensiert das angeborene menschliche Instinktdefizit, während die Besinnung eine Funktion der Selbstreflexion in die Sinnlichkeit einführt und einen inneren Dialog der Seele mit sich selbst konstituiert, auf dessen Grundlage die ersten Denkprozesse und die phonetische Sprache entstehen.The author examines the concept of non-verbal speech of “inner words” which lies at the core of Herder's theory of language genesis. The topic is generally ignored by scholars dealing with the subject. The major point in the author’s interpretation is that of distinguishing two aspects of the cognitive function of the mind embodied in sensuality introduced by Herder in place of the classic concept of the intellect. This is the distinction between Besonnenheit (identifying attention) which encodes iconic signs at the ground of the soul (fundus animae), and Besinnung (reflective attention) which transforms the signs fixed by Besonnenheit into inner words. Identifying attention compensates for the inborn human deficit of instincts, while reflective attention introduces the element of self-reflection into sensuality and generates an internal dialogue of the soul with itself, based on which the first thought processes and phonetic language arise.Artykuł poświęcony jest omówieniu koncepcji niewerbalnej mowy „wewnętrznych słów”, która stanowi istotny element Herderowskiej teorii genezy języka, pomijany zazwyczaj przez badaczy tematu. Najważniejszym elementem zaprezentowanej interpretacji będzie rozróżnienie dwóch aspektów poznawczej funkcji umysłu ucieleśnionego w zmysłowości, którą Herder wprowadza w miejsce klasycznego pojęcia intelektu: Besonnenheit (identyfikującą uwagę), która koduje znaki ikoniczne w podstawie duszy (fundus animae) oraz Besinnung (refleksyjną uwagę), która przekształca znaki utrwalone przez Besonnenheit w wewnętrzne słowa. Identyfikująca uwaga kompensuje wrodzony człowiekowi deficyt instynktów, natomiast refleksyjna uwaga wprowadza do zmysłowości element autorefleksji i tworzy wewnętrzny dialog duszy samej z sobą, na podłożu którego powstają pierwsze procesy myślowe i język fonetyczny

Przyczynek do filozoficznej genezy koncepcji Lebensweltu Jürgena Habermasa

Der Artikel bildet einen Versuch, die bisher unerforschten "begrifflichen Antezedenzen" zu benennen, die einen Teil des genealogischen Zusammenhangs für Jürgen Habermas' Entwurf der Lebenswelt gestalten. Der erste Teil des Artikels zeigt die Übereinstimmungen zwischen diesem Entwurf und dem Begriff der Rechtsphäre, die von Hegel in seiner Philosophie angewandt wird. Das Recht konstituiert einen Bereich des gesellschaftlichen Lebens, der das schriftlich niedergelegte Recht, die Sittlichkeit und ethische Institutionen (Familie, bürgerliche Gesellschaft und Staat) umfasst. Hegel trennt zwar noch nicht das "Recht" vom "System", schreibt ihm aber Eigenschaften zu, die Habermas in der Lebenswelt bemerkt (in der Theorie des kommunikativen Handelns). Im zweiten Teil des Artikels werden problematische Fäden vorgestellt, die Arnold Gehlen in seiner philosophischen Anthropologie und Theorie der Institutionen bespricht: die Rehabilitierung der instrumentalen Rationalität und Technik, das Konzept des habituellen, reflexionslosen Wissens, das soziale Praktiken bedingt, Genese der Moralnormen etc. Der Artikel weist nach, dass Habermas dieselben Fäden in seinem Lebenswelt-Entwurf aufgreift und zu ähnlichen Schlussfolgerungen wie Gehlen kommt.The article is an attempt to indicate the unexplored "conceptual antecedence" as the part of the genealogical context from which Jürgen Habermas’ concept derives. The first part of the text shows the convergences between this concept and the notion of „the sphere of right”(Recht) which is used by Hegel in his philosophy. Thus, the sphere of right is an area of law, social life which includes positive laws, morality and ethical institutions (family, civil society and state). Although Hegel does not separate even the "right" from the "system", but he endows it with qualities that Habermas attributes to the Lebenswelt (in his Theory of Communicative Action). The second part of the article presents several motives discussed by Arnold Gehlen in his philosophical anthropology and the theory of institutions: the rehabilitation of instrumental rationality and technology; the concept of non-discursive knowledge which determines social practices; the genesis of moral norms etc. The article demonstrates that in his concept of the Lebenswelt, Habermas shares views and reaches similar conclusions to Gehlen.Artykuł stanowi próbę wskazania niezbadanych dotąd „pojęciowych antecedencji”, które tworzą fragment genealogicznego kontekstu, z jakiego wyłoniła się koncepcji Lebensweltu Jürgena Habermasa. Pierwsza część tekstu pokazuje zbieżności między tą koncepcją a pojęciem sfery prawa, którego używa Hegel w swojej filozofii. Prawo stanowi obszar życia społecznego, które obejmuje prawo stanowione, moralność oraz instytucje etyczności (rodzinę, społeczeństwo obywatelskie oraz państwo). Wprawdzie Hegel nie oddziela jeszcze „prawa” od „systemu”, ale przypisuje mu cechy, które Habermas dostrzega w świecie przeżywanym (w swojej Teorii działania komunikacyjnego). W drugiej części artykułu zostaną zaprezentowane wątki problemowe, które omawia Arnold Gehlen w swojej antropologii filozoficznej i teorii instytucji: rehabilitacja racjonalności instrumentalnej i techniki, koncepcja shabiltualizowanej, bezrefleksyjnej wiedzy, która determinuje praktyki społeczne, geneza norm moralnych, etc. Autor pokazuje, że Habermas podejmuje te same wątki w swojej koncepcji Lebensweltu i dochodzi do podobnych konkluzji jak Gehlen

Inflammation and hypoxia in atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, and heart failure

Inflammation is a process that occurs after tissue damage or counteract infection. It is a complex reaction involving various cells, proteins (chemokines, acute-phase proteins) and other factors. The precise understanding of the mechanisms affecting the distribution of inflammatory cells and their modulators in areas of inflammation may have a crucial role in the development of strategies blocking inflammatory processes. Hypoxia leads to deprivation of oxygen and when it develops, various mechanisms come into action to alleviate any consequences that it might cause. Hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) is one of the most important factors involved in the response to hypoxia. Recent studies provide a better understanding of both, inflammation and hypoxia, in the development of atherosclerosis and various diseases in the spectrum of cardiology
