Robust, frequency-stable and accurate mid-IR laser spectrometer based on frequency comb metrology of quantum cascade lasers up-converted in orientation-patterned GaAs
We demonstrate a robust and simple method for measurement, stabilization and
tuning of the frequency of cw mid-infrared (MIR) lasers, in particular of
quantum cascade lasers. The proof of principle is performed with a quantum
cascade laser at 5.4 \mu m, which is upconverted to 1.2 \mu m by sum-frequency
generation in orientation-patterned GaAs with the output of a standard
high-power cw 1.5 \mu m fiber laser. Both the 1.2 \mu m and the 1.5 \mu m waves
are measured by a standard Er:fiber frequency comb. Frequency measurement at
the 100 kHz-level, stabilization to sub-10 kHz level, controlled frequency
tuning and long-term stability are demonstrated
Sub-Poissonian light and photocurrent shot-noise suppression in closed opto-electronic loop
We examine experimentally photocurrent noise reduction in the opto-electronic closed loop. Photocurrent noise density 12.5 dB below the shot-noise was observed. So large suppression was not reached in previous experiments and cannot be explained in terms of an ordinary sub-Poissonian light in the loop. We propose the concept of anticorrelation state for the description of light in the loop
Knowledge-based interoperability for mathematical software systems
Funding: OpenDreamKit Horizon 2020 European Research Infrastructures project (#676541) and DFG project RA-18723-1 OAF.There is a large ecosystem of mathematical software systems. Individually, these are optimized for particular domains and functionalities, and together they cover many needs of practical and theoretical mathematics. However, each system specializes on one area, and it remains very difficult to solve problems that need to involve multiple systems. Some integrations exist, but the are ad-hoc and have scalability and maintainability issues. In particular, there is not yet an interoperability layer that combines the various systems into a virtual research environment (VRE) for mathematics. The OpenDreamKit project aims at building a toolkit for such VREs. It suggests using a central system-agnostic formalization of mathematics (Math-in-the-Middle, MitM) as the needed interoperability layer. In this paper, we conduct the first major case study that instantiates the MitM paradigm for a concrete domain as well as a concrete set of systems. Specifically, we integrate GAP, Sage, and Singular to perform computation in group and ring theory. Our work involves massive practical efforts, including a novel formalization of computational group theory, improvements to the involved software systems, and a novel mediating system that sits at the center of a star-shaped integration layout between mathematical software systems.Postprin
A Mach-Zehnder Interferometer for a Two-Photon Wave Packet
We propose an experiment that permits observation of the de Broglie
two-photon wave packet behavior for a pair of photons, using a Mach-Zehnder
interferometer. It is based on the use of pulsed lasers to generate pairs of
photons via spontaneous parametric down-conversion and the post-selection of
events. It differs from previous realizations by the use of a third
time-correlated photon to engineer the state of the photons. The same technique
can give us which-path information via an ``interaction-free'' experiment and
can be used in other experiments on the foundations of quantum mechanics
related to wave-particle duality and to nonlocality.Comment: Submmited for publication in Physical Review
Soliton Squeezing in a Mach-Zehnder Fiber Interferometer
A new scheme for generating amplitude squeezed light by means of soliton
self-phase modulation is experimentally demonstrated. By injecting 180-fs
pulses into an equivalent Mach-Zehnder fiber interferometer, a maximum noise
reduction of dB is obtained ( dB when corrected for
losses). The dependence of noise reduction on the interferometer splitting
ratio and fiber length is studied in detail.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Multi-Watt Average Power Nanosecond Microchip Laser and Power Scalability Estimates
We demonstrated up to 2 W average power, CW-pumped, passively- Q-switched, 1.5 ns monolithic MCL with single-longitudinal mode-operation. We discuss laser design issues to bring the average power to 5-1 OW and beyond
Physically attractive faces attract us physically
When interacting with other humans, facial expressions provide valuable information for approach or avoid decisions. Here, we consider facial attractiveness as another important dimension upon which approach-avoidance behaviours may be based. In Experiments 1–3, we measured participants' responses to attractive and unattractive women's faces in an approach-avoidance paradigm in which there was no explicit instruction to evaluate facial attractiveness or any other stimulus attribute. Attractive faces were selected more often, a bias that may be sensitive to response outcomes and was reduced when the faces were inverted. Experiment 4 explored an entirely implicit measure of approach, with participants passively viewing single faces while standing on a force platform. We found greater lean towards attractive faces, with this pattern being most obvious in male participants. Taken together, these results demonstrate that attractiveness activates approach-avoidance tendencies, even in the absence of any task demand
