    A molecular phylogeny of Southeast Asian Cyrtandra (Gesneriaceae) supports an emerging paradigm for Malesian plant biogeography

    The islands of Southeast Asia comprise one of the most geologically and biogeographically complex areas in the world and are a centre of exceptional floristic diversity, harbouring 45,000 species of flowering plants. Cyrtandra, with over 800 species of herbs and shrubs, is the largest genus in the family Gesneriaceae and is one of the most emblematic and species-rich genera of the Malesian rainforest understorey. The high number of species and tendency to narrow endemism make Cyrtandra an ideal genus for examining biogeographic patterns. We sampled 128 Cyrtandra taxa from key localities across Southeast Asia to evaluate the geo-temporal patterns and evolutionary dynamics of this clade. One nuclear and four chloroplast regions were used for phylogenetic reconstruction, molecular dating, and ancestral range estimation. Results from the dating analysis suggest that the great diversity of Cyrtandra seen in the Malesian region results from a recent radiation, with most speciation taking place in the last five million years. Borneo was recovered as the most likely ancestral range of the genus, with the current distribution of species resulting from a west to east migration across Malesia that corresponds with island emergence and mountain building. Lastly, our investigation into the biogeographic history of the genus indicates high levels of floristic exchange between the islands on the Sunda shelf and the important role of the Philippines as a stepping stone to Wallacea and New Guinea. These patterns underlie much of the plant diversity in the region and form an emerging paradigm in Southeast Asian plant biogeography

    Geometric Suppression of Single-Particle Energy Spacings in Quantum Antidots

    Quantum Antidot (AD) structures have remarkable properties in the integer quantum Hall regime, exhibiting Coulomb-blockade charging and the Kondo effect despite their open geometry. In some regimes a simple single-particle (SP) model suffices to describe experimental observations while in others interaction effects are clearly important, although exactly how and why interactions emerge is unclear. We present a combination of experimental data and the results of new calculations concerning SP orbital states which show how the observed suppression of the energy spacing between states can be explained through a full consideration of the AD potential, without requiring any effects due to electron interactions such as the formation of compressible regions composed of multiple states, which may occur at higher magnetic fields. A full understanding of the regimes in which these effects occur is important for the design of devices to coherently manipulate electrons in edge states using AD resonances.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    A fast radio burst with a low dispersion measure

    Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond pulses of radio emission of seemingly extragalactic origin. More than 50 FRBs have now been detected, with only one seen to repeat. Here we present a new FRB discovery, FRB 110214, which was detected in the high latitude portion of the High Time Resolution Universe South survey at the Parkes telescope. FRB 110214 has one of the lowest dispersion measures of any known FRB (DM = 168.9±\pm0.5 pc cm−3^{-3}), and was detected in two beams of the Parkes multi-beam receiver. A triangulation of the burst origin on the sky identified three possible regions in the beam pattern where it may have originated, all in sidelobes of the primary detection beam. Depending on the true location of the burst the intrinsic fluence is estimated to fall in the range of 50 -- 2000 Jy ms, making FRB 110214 one of the highest-fluence FRBs detected with the Parkes telescope. No repeating pulses were seen in almost 100 hours of follow-up observations with the Parkes telescope down to a limiting fluence of 0.3 Jy ms for a 2-ms pulse. Similar low-DM, ultra-bright FRBs may be detected in telescope sidelobes in the future, making careful modeling of multi-beam instrument beam patterns of utmost importance for upcoming FRB surveys.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Colon carcinoma cells harboring PIK3CA mutations display resistance to growth factor deprivation induced apoptosis.

    PIK3CA, encoding the p110alpha catalytic subunit of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K), is mutated in a variety of human cancers. We screened the colon cancer cell lines previously established in our laboratory for PIK3CA mutations and found that four of them harbored gain of function mutations. We have now compared a panel of mutant and wild-type cell lines for cell proliferation and survival in response to stress. There was little difference in PI3K activity between mutant PIK3CA-bearing cells (mutant cells) and wild-type PIK3CA-bearing cells (wild-type cells) under optimal growth conditions. However, the mutant cells showed constitutive PI3K activity during growth factor deprivation stress (GFDS), whereas PI3K activity decayed rapidly in the wild-type cells. Importantly, constitutively active PI3K rendered the mutant cells resistant to GFDS-induced apoptosis relative to the wild-type cells, indicating a biological advantage under stress conditions that is imparted by the mutant enzymes. Compared with the wild-type cells, the mutant cells were hypersensitive to the apoptosis induced by the PI3K inhibitor LY294002. In addition, PIK3CA small interfering RNA significantly decreased DNA synthesis and/or induced apoptosis in the mutant cells but not in the wild-type cells. Furthermore, ecotopic expression of a mutant PIK3CA in a nontumorigenic PIK3CA wild-type cell line resulted in resistance to GFDS-induced apoptosis, whereas transfection of wild-type PIK3CA or empty vector had little effect. Taken together, our studies show that mutant PIK3CA increases the capacity for proliferation and survival under environmental stresses, such as GFDS while also imparting greater dependency on the PI3K pathway for proliferation and survival

    We consider a possibly degenerate porous media type equation over all of Rd\R^d with d=1d = 1, with monotone discontinuous coefficients with linear growth and prove a probabilistic representation of its solution in terms of an associated microscopic diffusion. This equation is motivated by some singular behaviour arising in complex self-organized critical systems. The main idea consists in approximating the equation by equations with monotone non-degenerate coefficients and deriving some new analytical properties of the solution

    A Mach-Zehnder Interferometer for a Two-Photon Wave Packet

    We propose an experiment that permits observation of the de Broglie two-photon wave packet behavior for a pair of photons, using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. It is based on the use of pulsed lasers to generate pairs of photons via spontaneous parametric down-conversion and the post-selection of events. It differs from previous realizations by the use of a third time-correlated photon to engineer the state of the photons. The same technique can give us which-path information via an ``interaction-free'' experiment and can be used in other experiments on the foundations of quantum mechanics related to wave-particle duality and to nonlocality.Comment: Submmited for publication in Physical Review

    No Far-Infrared-Spectroscopic Gap in Clean and Dirty High-TC_C Superconductors

    We report far infrared transmission measurements on single crystal samples derived from Bi2_{2}Sr2_{2}CaCu2_{2}O8_{8}. The impurity scattering rate of the samples was varied by electron-beam irradiation, 50MeV 16^{16}O+6^{+6} ion irradiation, heat treatment in vacuum, and Y doping. Although substantial changes in the infrared spectra were produced, in no case was a feature observed that could be associated with the superconducting energy gap. These results all but rule out ``clean limit'' explanations for the absence of the spectroscopic gap in this material, and provide evidence that the superconductivity in Bi2_{2}Sr2_{2}CaCu2_{2}O8_{8} is gapless.Comment: 4 pages and 3 postscript figures attached.     Spatial distribution of vertical carbon fluxes on the Agulhas Bank and its possible implication for the benthic nepheloid layer

    Vertical particle fluxes of particulate organic carbon (POC), chlorophyll a (Chl a) and biogenic silica (bSi) were measured on the productive shelf of southern Africa, the Agulhas Bank (AB), in March 2019. Sinking particulate material in the form of aggregates is hypothesized to form the benthic nepheloid layer (BNL) which is a turbid layer found near the seabed. This layer is known to affect the spawning success of squid as it is linked to high turbidity which reduces visibility during mating. To determine the distribution of fluxes and particle composition in the AB, we collected water samples below the surface mixed layer (‘export’) and near the seabed (‘bottom’) using a Marine Snow Catcher. POC export fluxes were significantly higher inshore than offshore (mean ± SD: 944.6 ± 302.0 & 461.1 ± 162.1 mg POC m−2 d−1, respectively). There was no significant difference in the cross-shelf distribution of Chl a and bSi export fluxes, however the inshore fluxes of Chl a and bSi were higher than offshore, suggesting a link between export fluxes and sinking organic matter derived from the more productive inshore surface waters. All bottom fluxes were significantly higher inshore, suggesting the contribution of sinking organic particles and resuspended bottom sediments to inshore fluxes. POC export efficiency (ratio of exported POC flux relative to net primary production (NPP)) was higher on the AB (range: 0.58–9.56) compared to the global shelf seas ratio of 0.18 and not related to NPP, suggesting an export of standing stock of carbon biomass, likely produced before the cruise. Transfer efficiency (i.e., the amount of exported flux that reaches the bottom) was also high (max: 0.99, 1.0 and 33.04 for POC, Chl a and bSi, respectively) but did not show a clear spatial pattern. We observed a significant positive correlation between bottom turbidity (a proxy for BNL presence) and export POC flux, suggesting the possibility that sinking organic matter is contributing to BNL formation on the AB

    On Detection of Erratic Arguments

    Abstract. Due to the erratic nature, the value of a function argument in one normal program execution could become illegal in another normal execution context. Attacks utilizing such erratic arguments are able to evade detections as fine-grained context information is unavailable in many existing detection schemes. In order to obtain such fine-grained context information, a precise model on the internal program states has to be built, which is impractical especially monitoring a closed source program alone. In this paper, we propose an intrusion detection scheme which builds on two diverse programs providing semantically-close functionality. Our model learns underlying semantic correlation of the argument values in these programs, and consequently gains more accurate context information compared to existing schemes. Through experiments, we show that such context information is effective in detecting attacks which manipulate erratic arguments with comparable false positive rates.     Model Analysis of Time Reversal Symmetry Test in the Caltech Fe-57 Gamma-Transition Experiment

    The CALTECH gamma-transition experiment testing time reversal symmetry via the E2/M1 mulipole mixing ratio of the 122 keV gamma-line in Fe-57 has already been performed in 1977. Extending an earlier analysis in terms of an effective one-body potential, this experiment is now analyzed in terms of effective one boson exchange T-odd P-even nucleon nucleon potentials. Within the model space considered for the Fe-57 nucleus no contribution from isovector rho-type exchange is possible. The bound on the coupling strength phi_A from effective short range axial-vector type exchange induced by the experimental bound on sin(eta) leads to phi_A < 10^{-2}.Comment: 5 pages, RevTex 3.
