    Final offer arbitration and major league baseball

    In 1974 Major League Baseball implemented the use of Final Offer Arbitration (FOA) to settle contract disputes for those players who were not yet eligible for free agency. Final Offer Arbitration was chosen because of its design to have parties reach settlement before the actual arbitration hearing. The purpose of this research is to evaluate if this system is the best method for settling contract disputes by analyzing whether Major League Baseball and its Players Association are using the system correctly, whether the system is fair and consistent, whether FOA has an effect on player performance, and also whether there is a relationship between team payroll and arbitration success

    This article examines economic incentives and other mechanisms to offset non-point source pollution from agriculture. A biophysical simulator to estimate technical relationships is linked to linear programming models for representative farms in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The models are then optimized for profit maximization under alternative non-point pollution control policies. The results indicate that site-specific resource conditions and production possibilities greatly influence policy effectiveness and the cost of achieving pollution abatement.     Nutrients, Eutrophic Response, and Fish Anomalies in the Little Miami River, Ohio

Total phosphorus (TP) and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), nitrogen, dissolved oxygen (DO), benthic and sestonic algal biomass, benthic phosphorus storage, aqueous trace metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Se, Zn), heavy metals (Al, Fe, Mn) and major cations (Ca, K, Mg, Na, Si) were analyzed at twelve sites over two summers. Results showed excess TP (>70 ug/L, p <0.05) and SRP (≥62.5 ug/L, p <0.05), borderline nuisance benthic algal biomass (mg/L chlorophyll a/m2) (periphyton: mean = 73.8 +/- 74.2, n = 125; Cladophora: mean = 216.7 +/- 380.7, n = 54), excess benthic phosphorus storage (mg P/m2) (periphyton: mean = 45.5 +/- 23.2, n = 64; Cladophora: mean = 129.3 +/- 224, n = 52), and high daytime DO (mean = 9.1 +/- 1.5 mg/L, n = 132). Previous studies showed aqueous phosphorus concentration and diurnal DO swings were positively correlated with fish anomalies (OEPA 1995, 2000). In this study, however, periphyton phosphorus (P) was the only eutrophic response variable to correlate with the distribution of fish anomalies reported by OEPA in 1995 and 2000, and the association was negative (R2 = 0.143, p = 0.002, m = -1.634, df = 1, 62). We concluded that aqueous nutrients, eutrophic response variables, and/or water chemistry alone did not explain the occurrence of fish anomalies in the LMR

    Ecological Divergence of a Novel Group of Chloroflexus Strains Along a Geothermal Gradient

    Environmental gradients are expected to promote the diversification and coexistence of ecological specialists adapted to local conditions. Consistent with this view, genera of phototrophic microorganisms in alkaline geothermal systems generally appear to consist of anciently divergent populations which have specialized on different temperature habitats. At White Creek (Lower Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park), however, a novel, 16S rRNA-defined lineage of the filamentous anoxygenic phototroph Chloroflexus (OTU 10, phylum Chloroflexi) occupies a much wider thermal niche than other 16S rRNA-defined groups of phototrophic bacteria. This suggests that Chloroflexus OTU 10 is either an ecological generalist or, alternatively, a group of cryptic thermal specialists which have recently diverged. To distinguish between these alternatives, we first isolated laboratory strains of Chloroflexus OTU 10 from along the White Creek temperature gradient. These strains are identical for partial gene sequences encoding the 16S rRNA and malonyl coenzyme A (CoA) reductase. However, strains isolated from upstream and downstream samples could be distinguished based on sequence variation at pcs, which encodes the propionyl-CoA synthase of the 3-hydroxypropionate pathway of carbon fixation used by the genus Chloroflexus. We next demonstrated that strains have diverged in temperature range for growth. Specifically, we obtained evidence for a positive correlation between thermal niche breadth and temperature optimum, with strains isolated from lower temperatures exhibiting greater thermal specialization than the most thermotolerant strain. The study has implications for our understanding of both the process of niche diversification of microorganisms and how diversity is organized in these hot spring communities

    Narrative Means to Preventative Ends: A Narrative Engagement Framework For Designing Prevention Interventions

    This article describes a Narrative Engagement Framework (NEF) for guiding communication-based prevention efforts. This framework suggests that personal narratives have distinctive capabilities in prevention. The article discusses the concept of narrative, links narrative to prevention, and discusses the central role of youth in developing narrative interventions. As illustration, the authors describe how the NEF is applied in the keepin\u27 it REAL adolescent drug prevention curriculum, pose theoretical directions, and offer suggestions for future work in prevention communication

    “Applied” Aspects of the Drug Resistance Strategies Project

    This paper discusses the applied aspects of our Drug Resistance Strategies Project. We argue that a new definitional distinction is needed to expand the notion of “applied” from the traditional notion of utilizing theory, which we call “applied.1”, in order to consider theory-grounded, theory testing and theory developing applied research. We label this new definition “applied.2” research. We then explain that our descriptive work describing the social processes of adolescent substance use, identity and use, and drug norms, as well as the subsequent development and dissemination of our keepin’ it REAL middle school substance use curriculum are examples of “applied.1” work. In the “applied.2” realm, we include our theory testing (e.g., tests of multiculturalism, narrative and performance theories, the Focus Theory of Norms) and theory-developing (e.g., parent-child communication, cultural grounding) research as well our new directions in theory development (e.g., adaptation processes). We conclude with a call for space in the discipline for “applied.2” work that builds and tests theory through application to significant social issues that contribute to our communities. We note obstacles in departmental and scholarly norms but express optimism about the prospects for “applied.2” research in the future of communication research
