    The Effect of Stainless Steel 304 Surface Roughness on Ice Adhesion Shear Strength of Accreted Impact Ice

    Aircraft in-flight icing is problematic due to the ad-verse effect on vehicle performance. It occurs when supercooled water droplets (SCWD) present in clouds, under the appropriate environmental conditions, col-lide with the aircraft surface resulting in accretion of ice (i.e., impact icing). Impact ice can range from clear/glaze to rime or a combination of the two (i.e., mixed) with the type determined by the air temperature (0 to -20C), liquid water content (LWC, 0.3-0.6 g/cu.m), and droplet size [median volumetric diameter (MVD) of 15-40 m] present during accretion.1 These impact icing events generally occur at temperatures ranging from 0 to -20C. Below -20C, ice crystals dominate the environment and typically do not adhere to the aircraft surface. A main difference between an impact icing occurrence and a slow growth icing (i.e., freezer ice) one is the speed of the icing event. Besides environmental conditions, ice adhesion strength (IAS) to a metallic substrate depends upon surface roughness.     Lifetime Lubricant Use among a Nationally Representative Sample of Lesbian- and Bisexual-Identified Women in the United States

    Introduction The diversity in self-identified lesbian and bisexual women's sexual interactions necessitates better understanding of how and when they integrate personal lubricant into different experiences. However, little is known about lesbian and bisexual women's lifetime lubricant use, particularly at the population level. Aims The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence and characteristics of lubricant use among adult lesbian and bisexual women in the United States. Methods Data were drawn from a subset of lesbian and bisexual participants who participated in the 2012 National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior, an online questionnaire administered to a nationally representative probability sample of U.S. adults ages 18 and older. Main Outcome Measures We examined socio-demographic characteristics, recent and lifetime lubricant use, lubricant use in associated with specific sexual behaviors and condom use, frequency of use, motivations for use, as well as perception of lubricant when used. Results A majority of lesbian- (60.1%) and bisexual-identified (77.1%) women reported ever using lubricant; 25.7% of lesbian women and 32.7% of bisexual women used it in the last 30 days. Across most age groups, lubricant was commonly used during partnered sexual play, partnered sexual intercourse, or when a vibrator/dildo was used. Lesbian and bisexual women reported using lubricants to increase arousal/sexual pleasure/desire, to make sex more fun, or to increase physical comfort during sex. Conclusions Lubricant use is identified as a part of lesbian and bisexual women's sexual experience across the life span, as a part of both solo and partnered experiences. As part of evolving sexual health assessments, clinicians and health educators may find value in integrating lubricant-focused conversation with their lesbian and bisexual patients and clients, particularly

    Otolaryngologic manifestations of klippel-feil syndrome in children

    IMPORTANCE: Children with Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS), characterized principally by abnormal fusion of 2 or more cervical vertebrae, may have many additional congenital anomalies. The overall prevalence of otolaryngologic manifestations among patients with KFS has not been previously characterized. OBJECTIVE: To define the otolaryngologic diagnoses made and procedures performed in95 patients with KFS, which, to our knowledge, is the largest series of this challenging patient population published to date. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: For this retrospective review, all patients with KFS who underwent otolaryngology consultation at our institution over a 26-year period (January 1989 to December 2015) were included. Patients were identified using International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) codes and were confirmed through individual medical record review. Relevant otolaryngologic diagnoses and procedures were extracted using ICD-9 and Current Procedural Terminology codes, respectively. Selected demographics included age, sex, number of clinic visits, and number of procedures. MAINOUTCOMES ANDMEASURES: The primary outcomes were the otolaryngologic diagnoses and procedures associated with the KFS patient population; the secondary outcome was Cormack-Lehane classification documented during airway procedures. RESULTS: Overall, 95 patients with KFS were included in this study (55 males [58%] and 40 females [42%]); mean (range) age at time of presentation to the otorhinolaryngology clinic was 5.8 (birth-23.0) years. Each patient with KFS averaged 8 visits to the otorhinolaryngology office and 5 otolaryngologic diagnoses. The most common diagnosis was conductive hearing loss (n = 49 [52%]), followed by sensorineural hearing loss (n = 38 [40%]), and dysphagia (n = 37 [39%]). Sixty-two (65%) patients underwent otolaryngologic procedures, with 44 (46%) undergoing multiple procedures. The most common procedure was tympanostomy tube placement (n = 36 [38%]), followed by office flexible endoscopy (n = 23 [24%]). Twelve of the20 patients who underwent direct laryngoscopy had documented Cormack-Lehane classification; 5 of 12 patients (42%) had a compromised view (grade 2, 3, or 4) of the larynx. Three patients required tracheotomies at this institution for airway stabilization purposes; each had severe upper airway obstruction leading to respiratory failure. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Patients with KFS require consultation for a variety of otolaryngologic conditions. Among these, hearing loss is the most common, but airway issues related to cervical spine fusion are the most challenging. Formulating an appropriate care plan in advance is paramount, even for routine otolaryngology procedures

    Impaired Meningeal Lymphatic Vessel Development Worsens Stroke Outcome

    The discovery of meningeal lymphatic vessels (LVs) has sparked interest in identifying their role in diseases of the central nervous system. Similar to peripheral LVs, meningeal LVs depend on vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-3 (VEGFR3) signaling for development. Here we characterize the effect of stroke on meningeal LVs, and the impact of meningeal lymphatic hypoplasia on post-stroke outcomes. We show that photothrombosis (PT), but not transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (tMCAo), induces meningeal lymphangiogenesis in young male C57Bl/J6 mice. We also show that Vegfr3wt/mut mice develop significantly fewer meningeal LVs than Vegfr3wt/wt mice. Again, meningeal lymphangiogenesis occurs in the alymphatic zone lateral to the sagittal sinus only after PT-induced stroke in Vegfr3wt/wt mice. Interestingly, Vegfr3wt/mut mice develop larger stroke volumes than Vegfr3wt/wt mice after tMCAo, but not after PT. Our results reveal differences between PT and tMCAo models of stroke and underscore the need to consider method of stroke induction when investigating the role of meningeal lymphatics. Taken together, our data indicate that ischemic injury can induce the growth of meningeal LVs and that the absence of these LVs can impact post-stroke outcomes

    Selective Decontamination of the Reactive Air Pollutant Nitrous Acid via Node-Linker Cooperativity in a Metal-Organic Framework

    Nitrous acid (HONO) is a reservoir of NOx and an emerging pollutant having direct impacts on air quality, both in- and outdoors, as well as on human health. In this work, the amine-functionalized metal–organic framework (MOF), UiO-66-NH2, was investigated due to its potential to selectively decontaminate nitrous acid at environmentally relevant concentrations. UiO-66-NH2 proved to be effective in the removal of nitrous acid from a continuous gaseous stream. This is observed via the formation of an aryl diazonium salt that subsequently converts to a phenol with a concomitant release of nitrogen gas. This process is preceded via the formation of the nitrosonium cation (likely protonation from an acidic proton on the node). Thus, UiO-66-NH2 is capable of selectively converting the pollutant nitrous acid to benign products

    Antibody-mediated neutralization of Ebola virus can occur by two distinct mechanisms

    AbstractHuman Ebola virus causes severe hemorrhagic fever disease with high mortality and there is no vaccine or treatment. Antibodies in survivors occur early, are sustained, and can delay infection when transferred into nonhuman primates. Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) from survivors exhibit potent neutralizing activity in vitro and are protective in rodents. To better understand targets and mechanisms of neutralization, we investigated a panel of mAbs shown previously to react with the envelope glycoprotein (GP). While one non-neutralizing mAb recognized a GP epitope in the nonessential mucin-like domain, the rest were specific for GP1, were neutralizing, and could be further distinguished by reactivity with secreted GP. We show that survivor antibodies, human KZ52 and monkey JP3K11, were specific for conformation-dependent epitopes comprising residues in GP1 and GP2 and that neutralization occurred by two distinct mechanisms; KZ52 inhibited cathepsin cleavage of GP whereas JP3K11 recognized the cleaved, fusion-active form of GP

    Some physical and mechanical characterization of Tunisian planted Eucalytus loxophleba and Eucalyptus salmonophloia woods

    After the independence in 1957 and with the support of the FAO117, Eucalyptus species were planted in Tunisia in different arboreta throughout the country for close observation and adaptation to climate and soil. The objective of this study is to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of two species planted in marginal area in Sousse (arboretum El Hanya) in the east of Tunisia (Eucalytus loxophleba and Eucalyptus salmonophloia). The moisture content, specific gravity and volumetric shrinkage were measured. The Mechanical tests were performed to evaluate the hardness, the static bending and the resistance to compression parallel to fiber direction. Preliminary results showed that Eucalytusloxophleba and Eucalyptus salmonophloia have a low dimensional stability. During the drying period, woods showed signs of collapses. On the other hand, both species were highly resistant to compression strength while they were lower on the static bending. Eucalytus loxophleba and Eucalyptus salmonophloia characteristics established within this study were similar to other Eucalyptus species from Tunisia, Morocco, Australia and Brazil.
