    Physical Conditions in the Inner Narrow-Line Region of the Seyfert 2 Galaxy NGC 1068

    The physical conditions in the inner narrow line region (NLR) of the Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC 1068, are examined using ultraviolet and optical spectra and photoionization models. The spectra are Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Harchive data obtained with the Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS). We selected spectra of four regions, taken through the 0.3" FOS aperture, covering the full FOS 1200A to 6800A waveband. Each region is approximately 20 pc in extent, and all are within 100 pc of the apparent nucleus of NGC 1068. The spectra show similar emission-line ratios from wide range of ionization states for the most abundant elements. After extensive photoionization modeling, we interpret this result as an indication that each region includes a range of gas densities, which we included in the models as separate components. Supersolar abundances were required for several elements to fit the observed emission line ratios. Dust was included in the models but apparently dust to gas fraction varies within these regions. The low ionization lines in these spectra can be best explained as arising in gas that is partially shielded from the ionizing continuum. Although the predicted line ratios from the photoionization models provide a good fit to the observed ratios, it is apparent that the model predictions of electron temperatures in the ionized gas are too low. We interpret this as an indication of additional collisional heating due to shocks and/or energetic particles associated with the radio jet that traverses the NLR of NGC 1068.     Conditional U1 gene silencing in Toxoplasma gondii

    The functional characterisation of essential genes in apicomplexan parasites, such as Toxoplasma gondii or Plasmodium falciparum, relies on conditional mutagenesis systems. Here we present a novel strategy based on U1 snRNP-mediated gene silencing. U1 snRNP is critical in pre-mRNA splicing by defining the exon-intron boundaries. When a U1 recognition site is placed into the 3’-terminal exon or adjacent to the termination codon, pre-mRNA is cleaved at the 3’-end and degraded, leading to an efficient knockdown of the gene of interest (GOI). Here we describe a simple method that combines endogenous tagging with DiCre-mediated positioning of U1 recognition sites adjacent to the termination codon of the GOI which leads to a conditional knockdown of the GOI upon rapamycin-induction. Specific knockdown mutants of the reporter gene GFP and several endogenous genes of T. gondii including the clathrin heavy chain gene 1 (chc1), the vacuolar protein sorting gene 26 (vps26), and the dynamin-related protein C gene (drpC) were silenced using this approach and demonstrate the potential of this technology.     Multi-Scaled Grassland-Woody Plant Dynamics in the Heterogeneous Marl Prairies of the Southern Everglades

    The Everglades freshwater marl prairie is a dynamic and spatially heterogeneous landscape, containing thousands of tree islands nested within a marsh matrix. Spatial processes underlie population and community dynamics across the mosaic, especially the balance between woody and graminoid components, and landscape patterns reflect interactions among multiple biotic and abiotic drivers. To better understand these complex, multi-scaled relationships we employed a three-tiered hierarchical design to investigate the effects of seed source, hydrology, and more indirectly fire on the establishment of new woody recruits in the marsh, and to assess current tree island patterning across the landscape. Our analyses were conducted at the ground level at two scales, which we term the micro- and meso-scapes, and results were related to remotely detected tree island distributions assessed in the broader landscape, that is, the macro-scape. Seed source and hydrologic effects on recruitment in the micro- and meso-scapes were analyzed via logistic regression, and spatial aggregation in the macro-scape was evaluated using a grid-based univariate O-ring function. Results varied among regions and scales but several general trends were observed. The patterning of adult populations was the strongest driver of recruitment in the micro- and meso-scape prairies, with recruits frequently aggregating around adults or tree islands. However in the macro-scape biologically associated (second order) aggregation was rare, suggesting that emergent woody patches are heavily controlled by underlying physical and environmental factors such as topography, hydrology, and fire

    SN 2007gr: a Normal Type Ic Supernova with a Mildly Relativistic Radio Jet?

    A nearby type Ic supernova, SN 2007gr was observed with the EVN in two epochs 60 days apart (second observation also included the Green Bank Telescope). In both cases one of the EVN stations was the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT), which recorded the observational data not only in the VLBI mode, but also in its normal interferometric mode. Thus it provided an important reference observation. In the first epoch the fluxes measured by the VLBI network and the WSRT alone match well. However in the second epoch the peak brightness observed in the VLBI experiment is much lower than the total flux recorded by the WSRT. There could be multiple reasons for this discrepancy: a resolution effect, coherence losses in VLBI, or extended emission contaminating the WSRT measurement. With new WSRT observations we costrain the level of background emission and find that there is still a difference between the corrected total flux density and the VLBI peak brightness. If one assumes that this is dominated by resolution, this would correspond to an average apparent expansion speed of ~0.4c

    A luminosity distribution for kilonovae based on short gamma-ray burst afterglows

    The combined detection of a gravitational-wave signal, kilonova, and short gamma-ray burst (sGRB) from GW170817 marked a scientific breakthrough in the field of multi-messenger astronomy. But even before GW170817, there have been a number of sGRBs with possible associated kilonova detections. In this work, we re-examine these "historical" sGRB afterglows with a combination of state-of-the-art afterglow and kilonova models. This allows us to include optical/near-infrared synchrotron emission produced by the sGRB as well as ultraviolet/optical/near-infrared emission powered by the radioactive decay of rr-process elements (i.e., the kilonova). Fitting the lightcurves, we derive the velocity and the mass distribution as well as the composition of the ejected material. The posteriors on kilonova parameters obtained from the fit were turned into distributions for the peak magnitude of the kilonova emission in different bands and the time at which this peak occurs. From the sGRB with an associated kilonova, we found that the peak magnitude in H bands falls in the range [-16.2, -13.1] (95%95\% of confidence) and occurs within 0.83.6days0.8-3.6\,\rm days after the sGRB prompt emission. In g band instead we obtain a peak magnitude in range [-16.8, -12.3] occurring within the first 18hr18\,\rm hr after the sGRB prompt. From the luminosity distributions of GW170817/AT2017gfo, kilonova candidates GRB130603B, GRB050709 and GRB060614 (with the possible inclusion of GRB150101B) and the upper limits from all the other sGRBs not associated with any kilonova detection we obtain for the first time a kilonova luminosity function in different bands.Comment: Published in MNRAS, 24 pages, 14 figure

    Efectos de un programa escolar orientado a la mejora de la condición física sobre el perfil lipídico de adolescentes: estudio EDUFIT

    Observational studies have reported an association among physical activity, fitness and lipid profile in youth. The purpose of this study was to analyse the effect of a school-based intervention focused on increasing the number and intensity of Physical Education (PE) sessions a week, on adolescents' lipid profile. METHODS: A 4-month group-randomized controlled trial was conducted in 67 adolescents (12-14 years-old) from South-East Spain, 2007. Three school classes were randomly allocated into control group (CG), experimental group-1 (EG1) and experimental group-2 (EG2). The CG received the usual PE in Spain (2 sessions/week), the EG1 received 4 PE sessions/week, and the EG2 received 4 PE sessions/week of high intensity. The main study outcomes were fasting levels of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc) and triglycerides. All the analyses were adjusted for sex, sexual maturation, attendance and baseline value of the outcome studied. RESULTS: The intervention did not positively affect cardio-metabolic parameters except for LDLc, that was marginally yet significantly reduced in EG2 (-10.4 mg/dl), compared with the CG (+4.1 mg/dl) (p = 0.04); no differences were observed however for the LDLc/HDLc ratio. No significant effects were observed in EG1. DISCUSSION: Overall, a 4-month school-based physical activity intervention did not substantially influence lipid profile in adolescents. However, the results suggest that increasing both frequency and intensity of PE sessions had a modest effect on LDLc in youth. Future studies involving larger sample sizes and longer interventions should focus on the separate effects of volume and intensity of PE.Objetivos: Los estudios observacionales han notificado una asociación entre la actividad física, la forma física y el perfil lipídico en la juventud. El propósito de este estudio fue analizar el efecto de una intervención basada en la escuela centrada en aumentar el número y la intensidad de las sesiones de educación física (EF) a lo largo de la semana, en el perfil lipídico de los adolescentes. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio controlado de distribución aleatoria en 67 adolescentes (12-14 2013s) del sudeste de España, en 2007. Tres clases fueron distribuidas al azar a un grupo control (GC), un grupo experimental-1 (GE1) y un grupo experimental-2 (GE2). El GC recibió las sesiones habituales de EF en España (2 sesiones semanales), el GE1 recibió 4 sesiones de EF /semana y el GE2 recibió 4 sesiones de EF /semana de alta intensidad. Los criterios de valoración principales del estudio fueron las concentraciones en ayunas de colesterol toral, lipoproteínas de densidad elevada-colesterol (HDLc), lipoproteínas de densidad baja-colesterol (LDLc) y de triglicéridos. Se ajustaron todos los análisis para el sexo, maduración sexual, asistencia y valor basal de la variable estudiada. Resultados: La intervención no afectó de forma positiva a los parámetros cardiovasculares a excepción de las LDLc que disminuyeron marginal aunque significativamente en el GE2 (-10,4 mg/dl), en comparación del GC (+4,1 mg/dl) (p = 0,04); sin embargo, no se observaron diferencias para el cociente LDLc/HDLc ratio. No se observaron efectos significativos en el GE1. Discusión: De forma global, una intervención de actividad física basada en la escuela durante 4 meses no influyó de forma sustancial en el perfil lipídico de los adolescentes. Sin embargo, los resultados sugieren que el aumentar tanto la frecuencia como la intensidad de las sesiones de EF tiene un efecto modesto sobre las LDLc en los jóvenes. Los estudios futuros que impliquen una muestra mayor e intervenciones más duraderas deberían centrarse en los efectos separados del volumen e intensidad de la EF
