    Wolf\u27s Spanisches Liederbuch: The Story of Redemption

    The study of musical hermeneutics, i.e. the search for finding congeneric and exogeneric meaning in music, has seen a resurgence in recent years, drawing on earlier work by McLaughlin, Coker, Kivy, and Cone. The songs of Hugo Wolf, inspired and molded by the text, lend themselves to hermeneutical study. Neumeyer and Komar have expanded Schenker’s ideas of organic structure to apply them across multi-movement works and song cycles to show the organic unity found within. Wolf’s Spanisches Liederbuch is often casually referred to as a “cycle,” but it does not fit the schema we traditionally hold for cycles in that the book as a whole does not follow one common thread. The first ten songs deal with sacred themes, the rest with worldly subjects. This study examines the ten Geistliche Lieder as a narrative song cycle. Within the sacred songs there is a cyclical thread to be found: in them, Wolf traces the redemption of mankind through the nativity, incarnation, suffering, and death of Christ that garnered man’s salvation. This paper looks at the sacred songs to find and understand this story as it is conveyed in both the text and the music in order to understand how each can inform our interpretations of the other, and to show how Wolf creates an organic unity among the entire “cycle” of sacred songs

    Counseling the Media: Bridging Pop Cultural Borders with the Mental Health Profession

    Professional counseling is often defined as a professional relationship meant to empower diverse people towards their mental health and wellness goals (Kaplan, Tarvydas, & Gladding, 2014). While counselors continue to provide professional services in many settings, counseling is not always portrayed in a positive light within television and film. Shows such as 13 Reasons Why and How I Met Your Mother both portray an inaccurate perception of counseling characters who disregard their ethical duties despite the American Counseling Association’s Code of Ethics (2014) mandates for safe-guarding the wellbeing of those seeking counseling, honoring multicultural diversity, and advocating for social justice. This frequent portrayal of unethical behaviors conflates mental health stigma with needed healthcare services for marginalized populations. Pop culture thus serves as a border, separating fiction from reality and superimposing a socially constructed barrier between optimal health and exaggerated entertainment. To correct these concerns, professional counseling can bridge gaps created by these borders by respecting pop cultural influences and disallowing societal oppression (Tarvydas, Vazquez‐Ramos, & Estrada‐Hernandez, 2015). Integration of literary and enacted characters in diverse media can serve as metaphors to enhance the therapeutic experience for clients, overcome life challenges, and promote optimal health goals (Rubin, 2008; Schmidt, 2009). Therefore, this experiential presentation will provide audience members a unique opportunity to critically analyze media portrayals of counseling services and discuss the impact on mental health stigma. Attendees will learn how pop culture can be ethically integrated within a counseling setting to respect each individual’s needs and diversity without promoting stigma

    Turbulent fluid acceleration generates clusters of gyrotactic microorganisms

    The motility of microorganisms is often biased by gradients in physical and chemical properties of their environment, with myriad implications on their ecology. Here we show that fluid acceleration reorients gyrotactic plankton, triggering small-scale clustering. We experimentally demonstrate this phenomenon by studying the distribution of the phytoplankton Chlamydomonas augustae within a rotating tank and find it to be in good agreement with a new, generalized model of gyrotaxis. When this model is implemented in a direct numerical simulation of turbulent flow, we find that fluid acceleration generates multi-fractal plankton clustering, with faster and more stable cells producing stronger clustering. By producing accumulations in high-vorticity regions, this process is fundamen- tally different from clustering by gravitational acceleration, expanding the range of mechanisms by which turbulent flows can impact the spatial distribution of active suspensions.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Pressure measurements on a rectangular wing with a NACA0012 airfoil during conventional flutter

    The Structural Dynamics Division at NASA LaRC has started a wind tunnel activity referred to as the Benchmark Models Program. The primary objective of the program is to acquire measured dynamic instability and corresponding pressure data that will be useful for developing and evaluating aeroelastic type CFD codes currently in use or under development. The program is a multi-year activity that will involve testing of several different models to investigate various aeroelastic phenomena. The first model consisted of a rigid semispan wing having a rectangular planform and a NACA 0012 airfoil shape which was mounted on a flexible two degree-of-freedom mount system. Two wind-tunnel tests were conducted with the first model. Several dynamic instability boundaries were investigated such as a conventional flutter boundary, a transonic plunge instability region near Mach = 0.90, and stall flutter. In addition, wing surface unsteady pressure data were acquired along two model chords located at the 60 to 95-percent span stations during these instabilities. At this time, only the pressure data for the conventional flutter boundary is presented. The conventional flutter boundary and the wing surface unsteady pressure measurements obtained at the conventional flutter boundary test conditions in pressure coefficient form are presented. Wing surface steady pressure measurements obtained with the model mount system rigidized are also presented. These steady pressure data were acquired at essentially the same dynamic pressure at which conventional flutter had been encountered with the mount system flexible
