    Conformational Preferences of 3-(Dimethylazinoyl)propanoic Acid as a Function of pH and Solvent; Intermolecular versus Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonding

    The conformational equilibrium of 3-(dimethylazinoyl)propanoic acid (DMAPA, azinoyl = N^+(O^−) has a weak pH-dependence in D_2O, with a slight preference for trans in alkaline solutions. The acid ionization constants of the protonated amine oxide and carboxylic functional groups as determined by NMR spectroscopy were 7.9 × 10^(−4) and 6.3 × 10^(−6), respectively. The corresponding value of K_1/K_2 of 1.3 × 10^2 is not deemed large enough to provide experimental NMR evidence for a significant degree of intramolecular hydrogen bonding in D_2O. Conformational preferences of DMAPA are mostly close to statistical (gauche/trans = 2/1) in other protic solvents, e.g., alcohols. However, the un-ionized form of DMAPA appears to be strongly intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded and gauche in aprotic solvents

    γ‐ray diagnostics of α slowing in inertial confinement fusion targets

    For large inertial confinement fusion deuterium-tritium targets, a way to diagnose alpha slowing might be via capture reaction gamma rays. Calculations are presented for two such methods: one uses the alpha+T direct capture gamma rays, the other is based on a series of resonant alpha-capture reactions. For small targets (rhoR less-than-or-equal-to 0.02 g/cm2), the total alpha+T gamma-ray yield relative to the DT neutron yield is temperature independent and proportional to the rhoR value. For large targets (rhoR greater-than-or-equal-to 0.2 g/cm2), this quantity becomes temperature dependent and rhoR independent. Some experimental aspects are discussed

    Academic socialization, parental educational expectations, and academic selfâ efficacy among Latino adolescents

    This study examined the direct association between parental educational expectations and adolescentsâ academic selfâ efficacy, as well as the moderating influence of parental academic socialization messages. Participants were 148 Latino parentâ adolescent dyads with the majority of Mexican origin (80.4%). Most of the parent participants were mothers (85.8%). Adolescents were 13 (46%) or 14 (54%) years of age, and 53% identified as female. Adolescents reported their academic selfâ efficacy and perceptions of their parentsâ educational expectations; parents reported on their academic socialization messages of shame/pressure and effort regarding academics. The results suggest that, after accounting for parentsâ level of education and immigrant status, parental educational expectations were positively associated with adolescent academic selfâ efficacy. This association was stronger among adolescents whose parents reported transmitting fewer messages of shame/pressure and academic effort.     We Are Colony: Digital VOD Distribution for Independent Film

    Through development and analysis of a slate of film releases on the We Are Colony Video-On-Demand (VOD) platform, alongside contextual qualitative research, this project explores the value of additional materials as part of an innovative, extended digital distribution approach to UK independent film. Project partners, Film London using the We Are Colony platform and researchers from Edge Hill University, wanted to explore how different VOD releases, supported by additional content, can deepen audience engagement, provide filmmakers with a better understanding of their online audience, and demonstrate potential for new digital business models. The research showcases a mix of potential new strategies for audience engagement and rights exploitation, as well as noting current barriers to adoption

    Biphasic alterations in coronary smooth muscle Ca2+ regulation in a repeat cross-sectional study of coronary artery disease severity in metabolic syndrome

    BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is progressive, classified by stages of severity. Alterations in Ca(2+) regulation within coronary smooth muscle (CSM) cells in metabolic syndrome (MetS) have been observed, but there is a lack of data in relatively early (mild) and late (severe) stages of CAD. The current study examined alterations in CSM Ca(2+) regulation at several time points during CAD progression. METHODS: MetS was induced by feeding an excess calorie atherogenic diet for 6, 9, or 12 months and compared to age-matched lean controls. CAD was measured with intravascular ultrasound (IVUS). Intracellular Ca(2+) was assessed with fura-2. RESULTS: IVUS revealed that the extent of atherosclerotic CAD correlated with the duration on atherogenic diet. Fura-2 imaging of intracellular Ca(2+) in CSM cells revealed heightened Ca(2+) signaling at 9 months on diet, compared to 6 and 12 months, and to age-matched lean controls. Isolated coronary artery rings from swine fed for 9 months followed the same pattern, developing greater tension to depolarization, compared to 6 and 12 months (6 months = 1.8 ± 0.6 g, 9 months = 5.0 ± 1.0 g, 12 months = 0.7 ± 0.1 g). CSM in severe atherosclerotic plaques showed dampened Ca(2+) regulation and decreased proliferation compared to CSM from the wall. CONCLUSIONS: These CSM Ca(2+) regulation data from several time points in CAD progression and severity help to resolve the controversy regarding up-vs. down-regulation of CSM Ca(2+) regulation in previous reports. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that alterations in sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+) contribute to progression of atherosclerotic CAD in MetS

    A comparative study of WASP-67b and HAT-P-38b from WFC3 data

    Atmospheric temperature and planetary gravity are thought to be the main parameters affecting cloud formation in giant exoplanet atmospheres. Recent attempts to understand cloud formation have explored wide regions of the equilibrium temperature-gravity parameter space. In this study, we instead compare the case of two giant planets with nearly identical equilibrium temperature (TeqT_\mathrm{eq} 1050K\sim 1050 \, \mathrm{K}) and gravity (g10ms1)g \sim 10 \, \mathrm{m \, s}^{-1}). During HSTHST Cycle 23, we collected WFC3/G141 observations of the two planets, WASP-67 b and HAT-P-38 b. HAT-P-38 b, with mass 0.42 MJ_\mathrm{J} and radius 1.4 RJR_\mathrm{J}, exhibits a relatively clear atmosphere with a clear detection of water. We refine the orbital period of this planet with new observations, obtaining P=4.6403294±0.0000055dP = 4.6403294 \pm 0.0000055 \, \mathrm{d}. WASP-67 b, with mass 0.27 MJ_\mathrm{J} and radius 0.83 RJR_\mathrm{J}, shows a more muted water absorption feature than that of HAT-P-38 b, indicating either a higher cloud deck in the atmosphere or a more metal-rich composition. The difference in the spectra supports the hypothesis that giant exoplanet atmospheres carry traces of their formation history. Future observations in the visible and mid-infrared are needed to probe the aerosol properties and constrain the evolutionary scenario of these planets.Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures, 8 tables, accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journa

    Element pool changes within a scrub-oak ecosystem after 11 years of exposure to elevated CO2

    The effects of elevated CO2 on ecosystem element stocks are equivocal, in part because cumulative effects of CO2 on element pools are difficult to detect. We conducted a complete above and belowground inventory of non-nitrogen macro- and micronutrient stocks in a subtropical woodland exposed to twice-ambient CO2 concentrations for 11 years. We analyzed a suite of nutrient elements and metals important for nutrient cycling in soils to a depth of ∼2 m, in leaves and stems of the dominant oaks, in fine and coarse roots, and in litter. In conjunction with large biomass stimulation, elevated CO2 increased oak stem stocks of Na, Mg, P, K, V, Zn and Mo, and the aboveground pool of K and S. Elevated CO2 increased root pools of most elements, except Zn. CO2-stimulation of plant Ca was larger than the decline in the extractable Ca pool in soils, whereas for other elements, increased plant uptake matched the decline in the extractable pool in soil. We conclude that elevated CO2 caused a net transfer of a subset of nutrients from soil to plants, suggesting that ecosystems with a positive plant growth response under high CO2 will likely cause mobilization of elements from soil pools to plant biomass

    Panoramic optical and near-infrared SETI instrument: prototype design and testing

    The Pulsed All-sky Near-infrared Optical Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence (PANOSETI) is an instrument program that aims to search for fast transient signals (nano-second to seconds) of artificial or astrophysical origin. The PANOSETI instrument objective is to sample the entire observable sky during all observable time at optical and near-infrared wavelengths over 300 - 1650 nm1^1. The PANOSETI instrument is designed with a number of modular telescope units using Fresnel lenses (\sim0.5m) arranged on two geodesic domes in order to maximize sky coverage2^2. We present the prototype design and tests of these modular Fresnel telescope units. This consists of the design of mechanical components such as the lens mounting and module frame. One of the most important goals of the modules is to maintain the characteristics of the Fresnel lens under a variety of operating conditions. We discuss how we account for a range of operating temperatures, humidity, and module orientations in our design in order to minimize undesirable changes to our focal length or angular resolution.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, 1 tabl
