Effect of organic crop rotations on long-term development of the weed seedbank
Changes in the weed seedbank were monitored between 1991 and 1998 in two experiments that were established to compare organic crop rotations at two sites in NE Scotland. Two rotations, replicated twice at each site, were compared and all courses of both rotations were present every year. There were relatively minor changes in weed species diversity over time, but major changes in seedbank abundance. Weed seed numbers were relatively low in rotations with a high proportion of grass/clover ley. Differences in level of seedbank across the rotation were relatively predictable at Tulloch but much less so at Woodside where factors such as the effect of the grass/clover ley seemed to play a lesser role. Other factors, such as weather and its influence on the effectiveness of weed control operations, and higher populations of ground-living arthropods, may be affecting the Woodside seedbanks
ALMA Cycle 1 Observations of the HH46/47 Molecular Outflow: Structure, Entrainment and Core Impact
We present ALMA Cycle 1 observations of the HH46/47 molecular outflow using
combined 12m array and ACA observations. The improved angular resolution and
sensitivity of our multi-line maps reveal structures that help us study the
entrainment process in much more detail and allow us to obtain more precise
estimates of outflow properties than previous observations. We use 13CO(1-0)
and C18O(1-0) emission to correct for the 12CO(1-0) optical depth to accurately
estimate the outflow mass, momentum and kinetic energy. This correction
increases the estimates of the mass, momentum and kinetic energy by factors of
about 9, 5 and 2, respectively, with respect to estimates assuming optically
thin emission. The new 13CO and C18O data also allow us to trace denser and
slower outflow material than that traced by the 12CO maps, and they reveal an
outflow cavity wall at very low velocities (as low as 0.2km/s with respect to
the cores central velocity). Adding with the slower material traced only by
13CO and C18O, there is another factor of 3 increase in the mass estimate and
50% increase in the momentum estimate. The estimated outflow properties
indicate that the outflow is capable of dispersing the parent core within the
typical lifetime of the embedded phase of a low-mass protostar, and that it is
responsible for a core-to-star efficiency of 1/4 to 1/3. We find that the
outflow cavity wall is composed of multiple shells associated with a series of
jet bow-shock events. Within about 3000AU of the protostar the 13CO and C18O
emission trace a circumstellar envelope with both rotation and infall motions,
which we compare with a simple analytic model. The CS(2-1) emission reveals
tentative evidence of a slowly-moving rotating outflow, which we suggest is
entrained not only poloidally but also toroidally by a disk wind that is

Gene-environment interaction between body mass index and transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGFβ1) gene in knee and hip osteoarthritis
Introduction: The objective was to investigate potential gene-environment interaction between body mass index (BMI) and each of eight TGFβ1 polymorphisms in knee and hip osteoarthritis (OA).
Methods: We conducted a case-control study of Caucasian men and women aged 45 to 86 years from Nottingham, United Kingdom (Genetics of OA and Lifestyle (GOAL) study). Cases had clinically severe symptoms and radiographic knee or hip OA; controls had no symptoms and no radiographic knee/hip OA. We used logistic regression to investigate the association of TGFβ1 polymorphisms and OA when stratifying by BMI. Knee and hip OA were analyzed separately with adjustment for potential confounders. Additive and multiplicative interactions were examined.
Results: 2,048 cases (1,042 knee OA, 1,006 hip OA) and 967 controls were studied. For hip OA, the highest risk was in overweight (BMI ≥25 kg/m2) individuals with the variant allele of single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)
rs1800468 (odds ratio (OR) 2.21, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.55, 3.15). Evaluation of gene-environment interaction indicated significant synergetic interaction (relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) = 0.93, synergy index (SI) = 4.33) with an attributable proportion due to interaction (AP) of 42% (AP = 0.42; 95% CI 0.16, 0.68). Multiplicative interaction was also significant (OR for interaction (ORINT) = 2.27, P = 0.015). For knee OA, the highest risk was in overweight individuals with homozygous genotype 11 of SNP rs2278422 (OR = 6.95, P < 0.001). In contrast, the variant allele indicated slightly lower risks (OR = 4.72, P < 0.001), a significant antagonistic interaction (RERI = -2.66, SI = 0.59), AP = -0.56 (95%CI -0.94, -0.17) and a significant multiplicative interaction (ORINT = 0.47, P = 0.013).
Conclusion: TGFβ1 gene polymorphisms interact with being overweight to influence the risk of large joint OA
Radiation dose and image quality of high-pitch emergency abdominal CT in obese patients using third-generation dual-source CT (DSCT)
In this third-generation dual-source CT (DSCT) study, we retrospectively investigated radiation dose and image quality of portal-venous high-pitch emergency CT in 60 patients (28 female, mean age 56 years) with a body mass index (BMI) (3) 30 kg/m(2). Patients were dichotomized in groups A (median BMI 31.5 kg/m(2);n = 33) and B (36.8 kg/m(2);n = 27). Volumetric CT dose index (CTDIvol), size-specific dose estimate (SSDE), dose length product (DLP) and effective dose (ED) were assessed. Contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and dose-independent figure-of-merit (FOM) CNR were calculated. Subjective image quality was assessed using a five-point scale. Mean values of CTDIvol, SSDE as well as normalized DLP and ED were 7.6 +/- 1.8 mGy, 8.0 +/- 1.8 mGy, 304 +/- 74 mGy * cm and 5.2 +/- 1.3 mSv for group A, and 12.6 +/- 3.7 mGy, 11.0 +/- 2.6 mGy, 521 +/- 157 mGy * cm and 8.9 +/- 2.7 mSv for group B (p 36.8 kg/m(2)
Protein Cofactors and Substrate Influence Mg2+-Dependent Structural Changes in the Catalytic RNA of Archaeal RNase P
The ribonucleoprotein (RNP) form of archaeal RNase P comprises one catalytic RNA and five protein cofactors. To catalyze Mg2+-dependent cleavage of the 5\u27 leader from pre-tRNAs, the catalytic (C) and specificity (S) domains of the RNase P RNA (RPR) cooperate to recognize different parts of the pre-tRNA. While ∼250-500 mM Mg2+ renders the archaeal RPR active without RNase P proteins (RPPs), addition of all RPPs lowers the Mg2+ requirement to ∼10-20 mM and improves the rate and fidelity of cleavage. To understand the Mg2+- and RPP-dependent structural changes that increase activity, we used pre-tRNA cleavage and ensemble FRET assays to characterize inter-domain interactions in Pyrococcus furiosus (Pfu) RPR, either alone or with RPPs ± pre-tRNA. Following splint ligation to doubly label the RPR (Cy3-RPRC domain and Cy5-RPRS domain), we used native mass spectrometry to verify the final product. We found that FRET correlates closely with activity, the Pfu RPR and RNase P holoenzyme (RPR + 5 RPPs) traverse different Mg2+-dependent paths to converge on similar functional states, and binding of the pre-tRNA by the holoenzyme influences Mg2+ cooperativity. Our findings highlight how Mg2+ and proteins in multi-subunit RNPs together favor RNA conformations in a dynamic ensemble for functional gains
Studying the Outflow-Core Interaction with ALMA Cycle 1 Observations of the HH46/47 Molecular Outflow
We present preliminary analysis of ALMA cycle 1 12m array ^(12)CO /^(13)CO /C^(18)O data of the HH 46/47 molecular outflow. ^(13)CO and C^(18)O trace relatively denser outflow material than ^(12)CO and allow us to trace the outflow to lower velocities than what it possible using only the ^(12)CO emission. Interestingly, the cavity wall of the red lobe can be seen at velocity as low as 0.2 km/s. Using C^(18)O, we are now able to estimate the optical depth of ^(13)CO, and then use the corrected ^(13)CO emission to further and better correct the ^(12)CO emission and estimate the mass, momentum, and kinetic energy of the outflow. Moreover, C^(18)O reveals a flattened rotational structure at the center, likely to be a rotational envelope infalling onto an inner Keplerian disk
An ALMA Search for Substructure, Fragmentation, and Hidden Protostars in Starless Cores in Chamaeleon I
We present an Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 106 GHz
(Band 3) continuum survey of the complete population of dense cores in the
Chamaeleon I molecular cloud. We detect a total of 24 continuum sources in 19
different target fields. All previously known Class 0 and Class I protostars in
Chamaeleon I are detected, whereas all of the 56 starless cores in our sample
are undetected. We show that the Spitzer+Herschel census of protostars in
Chamaeleon I is complete, with the rate at which protostellar cores have been
misclassified as starless cores calculated as <1/56, or < 2%. We use synthetic
observations to show that starless cores collapsing following the turbulent
fragmentation scenario are detectable by our ALMA observations when their
central densities exceed ~10^8 cm^-3, with the exact density dependent on the
viewing geometry. Bonnor-Ebert spheres, on the other hand, remain undetected to
central densities at least as high as 10^10 cm^-3. Our starless core
non-detections are used to infer that either the star formation rate is
declining in Chamaeleon I and most of the starless cores are not collapsing,
matching the findings of previous studies, or that the evolution of starless
cores are more accurately described by models that develop less substructure
than predicted by the turbulent fragmentation scenario, such as Bonnor-Ebert
spheres. We outline future work necessary to distinguish between these two

Object Play as a Positive Emotional State Indicator for Farmed Spotted Paca (Cuniculus paca)
We aimed to assess whether object play can be used as a positive emotional state indicator for farmed spotted pacas (Cuniculus paca) by examining its association with other positive welfare markers including affiliative behavior and low-amplitude vocalizations. We submitted six groups of spotted pacas (one male/two females per group) (N = 18) to an ABA experimental design (A1/A2: without ball; B: with three boomer balls). Object play behavior occurred only during phase B (mean = 35.5 s, SE = 6.4). The spotted pacas spent more time in affiliative and exploratory behaviors and less time engaging in agonistic interactions during phase B than in both control phases (A1 and A2) (p < 0.05). Moreover, the spotted pacas emitted more low-amplitude bark vocalizations during phase B than during either control phase (p < 0.05), and such vocalizations have previously been shown to indicate a positive affective state and low arousal level. Because the expression of object play was associated with a decrease in aggression, an increase in affiliative behavior, and an increase in low-amplitude barking, we suggest that object play can be used as a non-invasive indicator of positive emotional state in this species
