    A Bioinspired Bidirectional Stiffening Soft Actuator for Multimodal, Compliant, and Robust Grasping

    The stiffness modulation mechanism for soft robotics has gained considerable attention to improve deformability, controllability, and stability. However, for the existing stiffness soft actuator, high lateral stiffness and a wide range of bending stiffness are hard to be provided at the same time. This paper presents a bioinspired bidirectional stiffening soft actuator (BISA) combining the air-tendon hybrid actuation (ATA) and a bone-like structure (BLS). The ATA is the main actuation of the BISA, and the bending stiffness can be modulated with a maximum stiffness of about 0.7 N/mm and a maximum magnification of 3 times when the bending angle is 45 deg. Inspired by the morphological structure of the phalanx, the lateral stiffness can be modulated by changing the pulling force of the BLS. The lateral stiffness can be modulated by changing the pulling force to it. The actuator with BLSs can improve the lateral stiffness about 3.9 times compared to the one without BLSs. The maximum lateral stiffness can reach 0.46 N/mm. And the lateral stiffness can be modulated decoupling about 1.3 times (e.g., from 0.35 N/mm to 0.46 when the bending angle is 45 deg). The test results show the influence of the rigid structures on bending is small with about 1.5 mm maximum position errors of the distal point of actuator bending in different pulling forces. The advantages brought by the proposed method enable a soft four-finger gripper to operate in three modes: normal grasping, inverse grasping, and horizontal lifting. The performance of this gripper is further characterized and versatile grasping on various objects is conducted, proving the robust performance and potential application of the proposed design method

    Molecular marker analysis of ‘Shatangju’ and ‘Wuzishatangju’ mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco)

    ‘Wuzishatangju’(Citrus reticulata Blanco) is an excellent cultivar derived from a bud sport of a seedy ‘Shatangju’ cultivar found in Guangdong Province in the 1980s. In this study, six molecular markers including random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR), simple sequence repeat (SSR), sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP), inter-retrotransposn amplified polymorphism (IRAP) and retrotransposon-microsatellite amplified polymorphism (REMAP) were used to study the genetic variations between ‘Shatangju’ and ‘Wuzishatangju’. 1196 RAPD, seven SSR, 28 IRAP and 56 REMAP primers were used to detect the genetic variations between ‘Shatangju’ and ‘Wuzishatangju’. However, no difference was observed between the two cultivars. These results indicate that there was a very close genetic relationship between ‘Shatangju’ and ‘Wuzishatangju’ and RAPD, SSR, IRAP and REMAP markers could not distinguish them. Two and 21 specific bands were obtained using 100 ISSR and 153 SRAP primers, respectively.     Modified subxiphoid approach for surgical resection of a retrosternal goiter

    BackgroundsUnilateral Video-Assisted Thorascopic Surgery (VATS) is a traditional minimally invasive transthoracic approach for the surgical resection of a subxiphoid goiter. Recently, the subxiphoid approach was recommended for an anterior mediastinal mass. This study aims to investigate the feasibility and efficacy of a modified subxiphoid VATS for the resection of a retrosternal goiter as an alternative transthoracic approach.MethodsWe retrospectively collected all patients who underwent subxiphoid VATS for the resection of a retrosternal goiter from June 2017 to June 2021 in the Zhongshan Hospital or the Zhongshan Hospital Xiamen branch. Ten patients were found. Patient characteristics, perioperative data, and surgical information were collected and further analyzed.ResultsIn our study, all 10 patients underwent a thoracoscopic subxiphoid resection of a retrosternal goiter. The mean age was 49.4 years, and all were female. The majority of patients (70%) were asymptomatic. All patients were assessed by CT imaging before surgery. The mean postoperative hospital stay was 4.9 days. The drainage tube was removed 3 days after operation, and the average drainage volume was 73.1 ml. Postoperative pain was mild, with an average pain grade of 2.4 (measured on a scale from 0 to 10, with lower scores indicating less pain). There were no conversions or perioperative complications in these 10 patients.ConclusionsMost retrosternal goiters can be completely resected through the modified subxiphoid approach after an adequate preoperative evaluation and careful intraoperative management. This thoracoscopic subxiphoid approach is feasible and safe for retrosternal goiter resection

    Continuous and complete conversion of high concentration p-nitrophenol in a flow-through membrane reactor

    Here, we report on a green and effective method for the continuous and complete conversion of high concentrations of p-nitrophenol (PNP) using a flow-through membrane reactor and less NaBH4. The catalytic membrane was successfully fabricated by loading Pd nanoparticles onto the surface of a branched TiO2 nanorod-functionalized ceramic membrane. The modification with branched TiO2 nanorods can significantly improve the loading amount of Pd nanoparticles onto ceramic membranes, resulting in enhanced catalytic performance. With 6 mg of Pd, 93 L m−2 hr−1 of flux density and 8.04 cm2 of membrane surface area in the flow-through membrane reactor, PNP at a concentration of 4,000 ppm can be converted to high-value p-aminophenol using less NaBH4 (using a molar ratio of NaBH4:PNP of 9.6) within 24 s at 30°C.     Scientist or entrepreneur?:Identity centrality, university entrepreneurial mission, and academic entrepreneurial intention

    The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between identity centrality and entrepreneurial intention. Based on a survey of 275 academic scientists from 14 Chinese universities, the results show that entrepreneurial identity centrality positively influences the intention to engage in research commercialisation activities, such as spin-off creation, patenting and licensing, contracting research and consulting. We also found that the conflict between entrepreneurial and scientific identity centrality is less problematic than expected in the literature. In fact, the interaction between both identity centralities strengthens academics scientists’ intention to involve in academic entrepreneurship. Concerning the influence of institutional factor on academic entrepreneurship, the finding confirms that university entrepreneurial mission moderates the relationship between both identity centralities and the intention to establish spin-offs. Finally, this paper provides insights for academic entrepreneurship in China and practical recommendation for policy makers
