REGM acknowledges support from Ci?ncia sem Fronteiras (CNPq, Brazil).We study the properties of the central spheroids located within 10 kpc of the centre of mass of MilkyWay mass-sized galaxies simulated in a cosmological context. The simulated central regions are dominated by stars older than 10 Gyr, mostly formed in situ, with a contribution of ~30 per cent from accreted stars. These stars formed in well-defined starbursts, although accreted stars exhibit sharper and earlier ones. The fraction of accreted stars increases with galactocentric distance, so that at a radius of~8-10 kpc, a fraction of~40 per cent, on average, is detected. Accreted stars are slightly younger, lower metallicity, and more α-enhanced than in situ stars. A significant fraction of old stars in the central regions come from a few (2-3) massive satellites (~1010M⊙). The bulge components receive larger contributions of accreted stars formed in dwarfs smaller than ~109.5M⊙. The difference between the distributions of ages and metallicities of old stars is thus linked to the accretion histories - those central regions with a larger fraction of accreted stars are those with contributions from more massive satellites. The kinematical properties of in situ and accreted stars are consistent with the latter being supported by their velocity dispersions, while the former exhibit clear signatures of rotational support. Our simulations demonstrate a range of characteristics, with some systems exhibiting a co-existing bar and spheroid in their central regions, resembling in some respect the central region of the Milky Way. © 2016 The Authors.https://academic.oup.com/mnras/article/473/2/1656/422260

    Using a Gridded Global Dataset to Characterize Regional Hydroclimate in Central Chile

    Central Chile is facing dramatic projections of climate change, with a consensus for declining precipitation, negatively affecting hydropower generation and irrigated agriculture. Rising from sea level to 6000 m within a distance of 200 km, precipitation characterization is difficult because of a lack of long-term observations, especially at higher elevations. For understanding current mean and extreme conditions and recent hydroclimatological change, as well as to provide a baseline for downscaling climate model projections, a temporally and spatially complete dataset of daily meteorology is essential. The authors use a gridded global daily meteorological dataset at 0.25° resolution for the period 1948–2008, adjusted by monthly precipitation observations interpolated to the same grid using a cokriging method with elevation as a covariate. For validation, daily statistics of the adjusted gridded precipitation are compared to station observations. For further validation, a hydrology model is driven with the gridded 0.25° meteorology and streamflow statistics are compared with observed flow. The high elevation precipitation is validated by comparing the simulated snow extent to Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) images. Results show that the daily meteorology with the adjusted precipitation can accurately capture the statistical properties of extreme events as well as the sequence of wet and dry events, with hydrological model results displaying reasonable agreement with observed streamflow and snow extent. This demonstrates the successful use of a global gridded data product in a relatively data-sparse region to capture hydroclimatological characteristics and extremes

    Evolution of the Mass-Metallicity relations in passive and star-forming galaxies from SPH-cosmological simulations

    We present results from SPH-cosmological simulations, including self-consistent modelling of SN feedback and chemical evolution, of galaxies belonging to two clusters and twelve groups. We reproduce the mass-metallicity (ZM) relation of galaxies classified in two samples according to their star-forming activity, as parametrized by their sSFR, across a redshift range up to z=2. Its slope shows irrelevant evolution in the passive sample, being steeper in groups than in clusters. However, the sub-sample of high-mass passive galaxies only is characterized by a steep increase of the slope with redshift, from which it can be inferred that the bulk of the slope evolution of the ZM relation is driven by the more massive passive objects. (...ABRIDGED...) The ZM relation for the star-forming sample reveals an increasing scatter with redshift, indicating that it is still being built at early epochs. The star-forming galaxies make up a tight sequence in the SFR-M_* plane at high redshift, whose scatter increases with time alongside with the consolidation of the passive sequence. We also confirm the anti-correlation between sSFR and stellar mass, pointing at a key role of the former in determining the galaxy downsizing, as the most significant means of diagnostics of the star formation efficiency. Likewise, an anti-correlation between sSFR and metallicity can be established for the star-forming galaxies, while on the contrary more active galaxies in terms of simple SFR are also metal-richer. We discuss these results in terms of the mechanisms driving the evolution within the high- and low-mass regimes at different epochs: mergers, feedback-driven outflows and the intrinsic variation of the star formation efficiency.Comment: Emended list of author

    Multi-filter transit observations of WASP-39b and WASP-43b with three San Pedro M\'artir telescopes

    Three optical telescopes located at the San Pedro M\'artir National Observatory were used for the first time to obtain multi-filter defocused photometry of the transiting extrasolar planets WASP-39b and WASP-43b. We observed WASP-39b with the 2.12m telescope in the U filter for the first time, and additional observations were carried out in the R and I filters using the 0.84m telescope. WASP-43b was observed in VRI with the same instrument, and in the i filter with the robotic 1.50m telescope. We reduced the data using different pipelines and performed aperture photometry with the help of custom routines, in order to obtain the light curves. The fit of the light curves (1.5--2.5mmag rms), and of the period analysis, allowed a revision of the orbital and physical parameters, revealing for WASP-39b a period (4.0552947±9.65×10−74.0552947 \pm 9.65 \times 10^{-7} days) which is 3.084±0.7743.084 \pm 0.774 seconds larger than previously reported. Moreover, we find for WASP-43b a planet/star radius (0.1738±0.00330.1738 \pm 0.0033) which is 0.01637±0.003710.01637 \pm 0.00371 larger in the i filter with respect to previous works, and that should be confirmed with additional observations.     Association between recipient’s preexisting antibodies and allograft vasculopathy and mortality in heart transplant patients

    Objectives: To evaluate the role of preexisting Angiotensin II receptor type I antibodies (AT1RAb) and anti-HLA antibodies in predicting mortality and cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) among heart transplant patients. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we included 114 adults who received heart transplant from January 1st, 2007 to December 31, 2014 and were followed up at Nebraska Medicine. 48 hours pre-transplant sera sample were used to detect antibodies. A cutoff of 10UL/ml was used for AT1RAb positive and mean fluorescence intensity of 3,000 and 1,500 were used for anti HLA class I and class II, respectively. Patients were positive for composite antibodies if they were positive for anti-HLA, or AT1R antibodies. Survival analysis was conducted to compare the risk for mortality or CAV between antibody positive and negative groups. Result: Participants who had positive composite antibodies had higher probability of having CAV (p=0.05). Participants who were negative for AT1RAb trended toward a lower risk of mortality or developing CAV compared to AT1RAb positive counterparts. Conclusion: Positive status for any of anti-HLA or AT1RAb increased the risk of CAV. AT1RAb positivity is possibly linked with higher risk of death or developing CAV. Future study can focus on verifying these trends and the potential interaction effect between anti-HLA and AT1R antibodies

    Simultaneous sulfidation/oxidation of a ferritic steel under a simulated mixture of flue gas from an oil refinery

    Ferritic steels are exposed to simultaneous oxidizing/sulfiding environments during their service in industrial furnaces, which intensify their degradation and reduce their expected lifetime. This research supplies different corrosion details from those highly reported for the studied alloy under single oxidation or sulfidation atmospheres, as well as from those works developed on oxyfuel gas mixtures. The experimental data obtained by us were compared with an oxidation paper previously published by the same authors but without the additional effect of sulfur oxides. The simulated conditions used included temperatures from 450 to 750 °C, exposure times up to 200 h, and a flue gas molar composition without the carbon dioxide influence. As a result, the oxidation mechanism was markedly affected by bulk and surface sulfur compounds, due to their strong adsorption, pathways blocking, and induced layer spallation. This study aimed to identify sulfur compounds onto the oxide layers by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which were later validated through a ferritic-steel sample extracted from a refinery furnace. Finally, the present work contributes to the field of physics-physical chemistry-by providing the thermodynamic equilibrium of sulfur oxides at tested conditions and the kinetic behavior of the scale
