THE SOCIO-EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCES OF OLDER PERSONS WITH VISUAL IMPAIRMENTS
Older persons constitute the fastest growing segment of the population in many nations around the world. The estimation is that by the year 2050 one in every five persons will be 60 years or older (Keigher, Fortune & Witkin, 2000:xiii). According to Branch, Horowitz and Carr (1989:359) visual impairment is the second most prevalent physical impairment among older persons
Proteolysis in the Escherichia coli heat shock response: a player at many levels
Proteolysis is a fundamental process used by all forms of life to maintain homeostasis, as well as to remodel the proteome following environmental changes. Here, we explore recent advances in understanding the role of proteolysis during the heat shock response of Escherichia coli. Proteolysis both regulates and contributes directly to and the heat shock response at multiple different levels, from adjusting the levels of the master heat shock response regulator (Ï[superscript 32]), to eliminating damaged cellular proteins, to altering the activity of chaperones that refold heat-denatured proteins. Recent results illustrate the complexity of the heat shock response and the pervasive role that proteolysis plays in both the cellular response to heat shock and the subsequent limiting of the response, as cells return to a more ânormalâ physiological state

Care coordination in homecare and its relationship with quality of care: A national multicenter cross-sectional study
As health care complexity increases, skilled care coordination is becoming increasingly necessary. This is especially true in homecare settings, where services tend to be highly interprofessional. Poor coordination can result in services being provided twice, at the wrong time, unnecessarily or not at all. In addition to risking harm to the client, such confusion leads to unnecessary costs. From the patient's perspective, then, professional coordination should help both to remove barriers limiting quality of care and to minimize costs. To date, though, studies examining the relationship between care coordination and care quality have faced multiple challenges, leading to mixed results. And in homecare contexts, where the clients are highly vulnerable and diverse care interfaces make coordination especially challenging, such studies are rare.; Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the relationship, from the perspectives of clients and of homecare professionals, between coordination and quality of care. For both groups, we hypothesized that better coordination would correlate with higher ratings of quality of care. For the clients, we predicted that higher coordination ratings would lead to lower incidence of unplanned health care use, i.e., emergency department (ED) visits, unscheduled urgent medical visits and hospitalizations.; This study is part of a national multi-center cross-sectional study in the Swiss homecare setting. We recruited 88 homecare agencies and collected data between January and September 2021 through written questionnaires for agencies' managers, employees (n = 3223) and clients (n = 1509). To test our hypotheses, we conducted multilevel analyses.; Employee-perceived care coordination ratings correlated positively with employee-rated quality of care (OR = 2.78, p < .001); client-perceived care coordination problems correlated inversely with client-reported quality of care (ÎČ = -0.55, p < .001). Client-perceived coordination problems also correlated positively with hospitalizations (IRR = 1.20, p < .05) and unscheduled urgent medical visits (IRR = 1.18, p < .05), but not significantly with ED visits. No associations were discernible between employee-perceived coordination quality and either health care service use or client quality-of-care ratings.; While results indicate relationships between coordination and diverse aspects of care quality, various coordination gaps (e.g., poor information flow) also became apparent. The measurement of both care coordination and quality of care remains a challenge. Further research should focus on developing and validating a coordination questionnaire that measures care coordination
Groundwater ages, recharge conditions and hydrochemical evolution of a barrier island freshwater lens (Spiekeroog, Northern Germany)
Freshwater lenses below barrier islands are dynamic systems affected by changes in morphodynamic
patterns, groundwater recharge and discharge. They are also vulnerable to pollution and overabstraction
of groundwater. Basic knowledge on hydrogeological and hydrochemical processes of freshwater lenses
is important to ensure a sustainable water management, especially when taking into account possible
effects of climate change. This is the first study which gives a compact overview on the age distribution,
recharge conditions and hydrochemical evolution of a barrier island freshwater lens in the southern
North Sea (Spiekeroog Island, Eastfrisian Wadden Sea). Two ground- and surface water sampling campaigns
were carried out in May and July 2011, supplemented by monthly precipitation sampling from
July to October. 3Hâ3He ages, stable oxygen and hydrogen isotopes and major ion concentrations show
that the freshwater lens reaches a depth of 44 mbsl, where an aquitard constrains further expansion in
vertical direction. Groundwater ages are increasing from 4.4 years in 12 mbsl up to >70 years at the freshwaterâ
saltwater interface. Stable isotope signatures reflect average local precipitation signatures. An
annual recharge rate of 300â400 mm was calculated with 3Hâ3He data. Freshwater is primarily of
NaâCaâMgâHCO3â and CaâNaâHCO3âCl type, while lowly mineralized precipitation and saltwater are
of NaâCl types. A trend towards heavier stable isotope signatures and higher electric conductivities in
the shallower, younger groundwater within the freshwater lens may indicate increasing atmospheric
temperatures in the last 30 years

Coping under stress: Prefrontal control predicts stress burden during the COVID-19 crisis
The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has confronted millions of people around the world with an unprecedented stressor, affecting physical and mental health. Accumulating evidence suggests that emotional and cognitive self-regulation is particularly needed to effectively cope with stress. Therefore, we investigated the predictive value of affective and inhibitory prefrontal control for stress burden during the COVID-19 crisis. Physical and mental health burden were assessed using an online survey, which was administered to 104 participants of an ongoing at-risk birth cohort during the first wave in April 2020. Two follow-ups were carried out during the pandemic, one capturing the relaxation during summer and the other the beginning of the second wave of the crisis. Prefrontal activity during emotion regulation and inhibitory control were assessed prior to the COVID-19 crisis. Increased inferior frontal gyrus activity during emotion regulation predicted lower stress burden at the beginning of the first and the second wave of the crisis. In contrast, inferior and middle frontal gyrus activity during inhibitory control predicted effective coping only during the summer, when infection rates decreased but stress burden remained unchanged. These findings remained significant when controlling for sociodemographic and clinical confounders such as stressful life events prior to the crisis or current psychopathology. We demonstrate that differential stress-buffering effects are predicted by the neural underpinnings of emotion regulation and cognitive regulation at different stages during the pandemic. These findings may inform future prevention strategies to foster stress coping in unforeseen situations
Double layer SiO2âTiO2 solâgel thin films on glass for antireflection, antifogging, and UV recoverable self-cleaning
Double layer thin films, mechanically stable and adhering to glass, were produced through the solâgel process, using tetraethyl orthosilicate and titanium butoxide as precursors. The refractive index of the titania and silicaâ titania composite layers were typically 2.1 and 1.7, and their physical thicknesses were approximately 65 nm and 81 nm, respectively, as determined by ellipsometry. These optical constants allowed attainment of quarterwave optical thicknesses at the center of the visible spectrum (550 nm) as designed, with an increase of 3.4% in transmittance. The nanometric surface roughness, measured by optical profilometry, was effective to decrease light scattering and water contact angles to below 10⊠. As novelty in dip-coated solâgel films, superhydrophilicity for self-cleaning, antifogging, and antireflection in the mid-visible spectrum were simultaneously attained with durability of 9 weeks in the dark. Further application of UV light allowed regeneration of contact angles for self-cleaning
The importance of high quality real-life social interactions during the COVID-19 pandemic
The coronavirus pandemic has brought about dramatic restrictions to real-life social interactions and a shift towards more online social encounters. Positive social interactions have been highlighted as an important protective factor, with previous studies suggesting an involvement of the amygdala in the relationship between social embeddedness and well-being. The present study investigated the effect of the quality of real-life and online social interactions on mood, and explored whether this association is affected by an individualâs amygdala activity. Sixty-two participants of a longitudinal study took part in a one-week ecological momentary assessment (EMA) during the first lockdown, reporting their momentary well-being and their engagement in real-life and online social interactions eight times per day (Nâ~â3000 observations). Amygdala activity was assessed before the pandemic during an emotion-processing task. Mixed models were calculated to estimate the association between social interactions and well-being, including two-way interactions to test for the moderating effect of amygdala activity. We found a positive relationship between real-life interactions and momentary well-being. In contrast, online interactions had no effect on well-being. Moreover, positive real-life social interactions augmented this social affective benefit, especially in individuals with higher amygdala being more sensitive to the interaction quality. Our findings demonstrate a mood-lifting effect of positive real-life social interactions during the pandemic, which was dependent on amygdala activity before the pandemic. As no corresponding effect was found between online social interactions and well-being, it can be concluded that increased online social interactions may not compensate for the absence of real-life social interactions
