Development of an analytical technique for the optimization of jet engine and duct acoustic liners
A special integral representation of the external solutions of the Helmholtz equation is described. The analytical technique developed for the generation of the optimum acoustic admittance for an arbitrary axisymmetric body is also presented along with some numerical procedures and some preliminary results for a straight duct
Development of an analytical technique for the optimization of jet engine and duct acoustic liners
A new method was developed for the calculation of optimum constant admittance solutions for the minimization of the sound radiated from an arbitrary axisymmetric body. This method utilizes both the integral equation technique used in the calculation of the optimum non-constant admittance liners and the independent solution generated as a by product of these calculations. The results generated by both these methods are presented for three duct geometries: (1) a straight duct; (2) the QCSEE inlet; and (3) the QCSEE inlet less its centerbody
Gluon contributions to the pion mass and light cone momentum fraction
We calculate the matrix elements of the gluonic contributions to the
energy-momentum tensor for a pion of mass 600 < Mpi < 1100 MeV in quenched
lattice QCD. We find that gluons contribute (37 +/- 8 +/- 12)% of the pion's
light cone momentum. The bare matrix elements corresponding to the trace
anomaly contribution to the pion mass are also obtained. The discretizations of
the energy-momentum tensor we use have other promising applications, ranging
from calculating the origin of hadron spin to QCD thermodynamics.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Two-temperature coronal flow above a thin disk
We extended the disk corona model (Meyer & Meyer-Hofmeister 1994; Meyer, Liu,
& Meyer-Hofmeister 2000a) to the inner region of galactic nuclei by including
different temperatures in ions and electrons as well as Compton cooling. We
found that the mass evaporation rate and hence the fraction of accretion energy
released in the corona depend strongly on the rate of incoming mass flow from
outer edge of the disk, a larger rate leading to more Compton cooling, less
efficient evaporation and a weaker corona. We also found a strong dependence on
the viscosity, higher viscosity leading to an enhanced mass flow in the corona
and therefore more evaporation of gas from the disk below. If we take accretion
rates in units of the Eddington rate our results become independent on the mass
of the central black hole. The model predicts weaker contributions to the hard
X-rays for objects with higher accretion rate like narrow-line Seyfert 1
galaxies (NLS1s), in agreement with observations. For luminous active galactic
nuclei (AGN) strong Compton cooling in the innermost corona is so efficient
that a large amount of additional heating is required to maintain the corona

Pair-factorized steady states on arbitrary graphs
Stochastic mass transport models are usually described by specifying hopping
rates of particles between sites of a given lattice, and the goal is to predict
the existence and properties of the steady state. Here we ask the reverse
question: given a stationary state that factorizes over links (pairs of sites)
of an arbitrary connected graph, what are possible hopping rates that converge
to this state? We define a class of hopping functions which lead to the same
steady state and guarantee current conservation but may differ by the induced
current strength. For the special case of anisotropic hopping in two dimensions
we discuss some aspects of the phase structure. We also show how this case can
be traced back to an effective zero-range process in one dimension which is
solvable for a large class of hopping functions.Comment: IOP style, 9 pages, 1 figur
Specifying ODP computational objects in Z
The computational viewpoint contained within the Reference Model of Open Distributed Processing (RM-ODP) shows how collections of objects can be configured within a distributed system to enable interworking. It prescribes certain capabilities that such objects are expected to possess and structuring rules that apply to how these objects can be configured with one another. This paper highlights how the specification language Z can be used to formalise these capabilities and the associated structuring rules, thereby enabling specifications of ODP systems from the computational viewpoint to be achieved
Spin correlations in pion production near threshold
A first measurement of longitudinal as well as transverse spin correlation
coefficients for the reaction was made using a
polarized proton target and a polarized proton beam. We report kinematically
complete measurements for this reaction at 325, 350, 375 and 400 MeV beam
energy. The spin correlation coefficients and the analyzing power as well as angular
distributions for and the polarization observables
were extracted. Partial wave cross sections for dominant
transition channels were obtained from a partial wave analysis that included
the transitions with final state angular momenta of . The measurements
of the polarization observables are compared
with the predictions from the J\"ulich meson exchange model. The agreement is
very good at 325 MeV, but it deteriorates increasingly for the higher energies.
At all energies agreement with the model is better than for the reaction

Measurement of Partial-Wave Contributions in pp --> pp pi^0
We report a measurement of the spin-dependent total cross section ratios
delta_sigma_T/sigma_tot and delta_sigma_L/sigma_tot of the pp --> pp pi^0
reaction between 325 MeV and 400 MeV. The experiment was carried out with a
polarized internal target in a storage ring. Non-vertical beam polarization was
obtained by the use of solenoidal spin rotators. Near threshold, the knowledge
of both spin-dependent total cross sections is sufficient to deduce the
strength of certain participating partial waves, free of any model.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
