    FUSE Observations of Outflowing OVI in the Dwarf Starburst Galaxy NGC1705

    We report FUSE far-UV spectroscopy of the prototypical dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 1705. These data allow us for the first time to probe the coronal-phase gas (T = 10E5 to 10E6 K) that may dominate the radiative cooling of the supernova-heated ISM and thereby determine the dynamical evolution of starburst-driven outflows. We detect a broad (100 km/s) and blueshifted (by 80 km/s) OVI absorption-line arising in the previously-known galactic outflow. The properties of the OVI absorption are inconsistent with the standard superbubble model in which this gas arises in a conductive interface inside the outer shell. We show that the superbubble in NGC 1705 is blowing out of the galaxy ISM. During blow-out, coronal-phase gas can be created by hydrodynamical mixing as hot gas rushes out through fissures in the fragmenting shell of cool gas. As the coronal gas cools radiatively, it can naturally produce the observed OVI column density and outflow speed. The OVI data show that the cooling rate in the coronal-phase gas is less than about 10% of the supernova heating rate. Since the X-ray luminosity from hotter gas is even smaller, we conclude that radiative losses are insignificant. The outflow should be able to vent its metals and kinetic energy out of the galaxy.     Imaging of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies in the Near-UV

    We present the first ground-based U' (3410 angstroms) images of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIGs). Strong U' emission (median total M_U' = -20.8) is seen in all systems and in some cases the extended tidal features (both the smooth stellar distribution and compact star-forming features) contribute up to 60-80% of the total flux. The star-forming regions in both samples are found to have ages based on spectral synthesis models in the range 10-100 Myrs, and most differences in color between them can be attributed to the effects of dust reddening. Additionally, it is found that star-formation in compact knots in the tidal tails is most prominent in those ULIGs which have double nuclei, suggesting that the star-formation rate in the tails peaks prior to the actual coalescence of the galaxy nuclei and diminishes quickly thereafter. Similar to results at other wavelengths, the observed star formation at U' can only account for a small fraction of the known bolometric luminosity of the ULIGs. Azimuthally averaged radial light profiles at U' are characterized by a sersic law with index n=2, which is intermediate between an exponential disk and an r^(-1/4) law and closely resembles the latter at large radii. The implications of this near-ultraviolet imaging for optical/near-infrared observations of high redshift counterparts of ULIGs are discussed.Comment: 30 pages, 4 tables, and 9 figures, 2 of which are JPEGs.     We have investigated the far-infrared response of quantum dots in modulation doped GaAs heterostructures. We observe novel modes at frequencies below the center-of-mass Kohn mode. Comparison with Hartree-RPA calculations show that these modes arise from the flattened potential in our field-effect confined quantum dots.     Using Group Model Building to Understand Factors That Influence Childhood Obesity in an Urban Environment

    Background: Despite increased attention, conventional views of obesity are based upon individual behaviors, and children and parents living with obesity are assumed to be the primary problem solvers. Instead of focusing exclusively on individual reduction behaviors for childhood obesity, greater focus should be placed on better understanding existing community systems and their effects on obesity. The Milwaukee Childhood Obesity Prevention Project is a community-based coalition established to develop policy and environmental change strategies to impact childhood obesity in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The coalition conducted a Group Model Building exercise to better understand root causes of childhood obesity in its community. Methods: Group Model Building is a process by which a group systematically engages in model construction to better understand the systems that are in place. It helps participants make their mental models explicit through a careful and consistent process to test assumptions. This process has 3 main components: (1) assembling a team of participants; (2) conducting a behavior-over-time graphs exercise; and (3) drawing the causal loop diagram exercise. Results: The behavior-over-time graph portion produced 61 graphs in 10 categories. The causal loop diagram yielded 5 major themes and 7 subthemes. Conclusions: Factors that influence childhood obesity are varied, and it is important to recognize that no single solution exists. The perspectives from this exercise provided a means to create a process for dialogue and commitment by stakeholders and partnerships to build capacity for change within the community

    The catalytically inactive tyrosine phosphatase HD-PTP/PTPN23 is a novel regulator of SMN complex localization

    The survival motor neuron (SMN) complex fulfils essential functions in the assembly of snRNPs, which are key components in the splicing of pre-mRNAs. Little is known about the regulation of SMN complex activity by posttranslational modification despite its complicated phosphorylation pattern. Several phosphatases had been implicated in the regulation of SMN, including the nuclear phosphatases PPM1G and PP1γ. Here we systematically screened all human phosphatase gene products for a regulatory role in the SMN complex. We used the accumulation of SMN in Cajal bodies of intact proliferating cells, which actively assemble snRNPs, as a readout for unperturbed SMN complex function. Knockdown of 29 protein phosphatases interfered with SMN accumulation in Cajal bodies, suggesting impaired SMN complex function, among those the catalytically inactive, non–receptor-type tyrosine phosphatase PTPN23/HD-PTP. Knockdown of PTPN23 also led to changes in the phosphorylation pattern of SMN without affecting the assembly of the SMN complex. We further show interaction between SMN and PTPN23 and document that PTPN23, like SMN, shuttles between nucleus and cytoplasm. Our data provide the first comprehensive screen for SMN complex regulators and establish a novel regulatory function of PTPN23 in maintaining a highly phosphorylated state of SMN, which is important for its proper function in snRNP assembly

    Outlying HII Regions in HI-Selected Galaxies

    We present results from the first systematic search for outlying HII regions, as part of a sample of 96 emission-line point sources (referred to as ELdots - emission-line dots) derived from the NOAO Survey for Ionization in Neutral Gas Galaxies (SINGG). Our automated ELdot-finder searches SINGG narrow-band and continuum images for high equivalent width point sources outside the optical radius of the target galaxy (> 2 X r25 in the R-band). Follow-up longslit spectroscopy and deep GALEX images (exposure time > 1000 s) distinguish outlying HII regions from background galaxies whose strong emission lines ([OIII], Hbeta or [OII]) have been redshifted into the SINGG bandpass. We find that these deep GALEX images can serve as a substitute for spectroscopic follow-up because outlying HII regions separate cleanly from background galaxies in color-color space. We identify seven SINGG systems with outlying massive star formation that span a large range in Halpha luminosities corresponding to a few O stars in the most nearby cases, and unresolved dwarf satellite companion galaxies in the most distant cases. Six of these seven systems feature galaxies with nearby companions or interacting galaxies. Furthermore, our results indicate that some outlying HII regions are linked to the extended-UV disks discovered by GALEX, representing emission from the most massive O stars among a more abundant population of lower mass (or older) star clusters. The overall frequency of outlying HII regions in this sample of gas-rich galaxies is 8 - 11% when we correct for background emission-line galaxy contamination (~75% of ELdots).Comment: 20 pages, 14 Figures, Accepted by A
