    Decoding Random Binary Linear Codes in 2n/202^{n/20}: How 1+1=01+1=0 Improves Information Set Decoding

    Get PDF
    Decoding random linear codes is a well studied problem with many applications in complexity theory and cryptography. The security of almost all coding and LPN/LWE-based schemes relies on the assumption that it is hard to decode random linear codes. Recently, there has been progress in improving the running time of the best decoding algorithms for binary random codes. The ball collision technique of Bernstein, Lange and Peters lowered the complexity of Stern\u27s information set decoding algorithm to 20.0556n2^{0.0556n}. Using {\it representations} this bound was improved to 20.0537n2^{0.0537n} by May, Meurer and Thomae. We show how to further increase the number of representations and propose a new information set decoding algorithm with running time 20.0494n2^{0.0494n}

    Evidence for an exotic S=-2, Q=-2 baryon resonance in proton-proton collisions at the CERN SPS

    Results of resonance searches in the Xi - pi -, Xi - pi +, Xi -bar+ pi -, and Xi -bar+ pi + invariant mass spectra in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=17.2 GeV are presented. Evidence is shown for the existence of a narrow Xi - pi - baryon resonance with mass of 1.862±0.002 GeV/c2 and width below the detector resolution of about 0.018 GeV/c2. The significance is estimated to be above 4.2 sigma . This state is a candidate for the hypothetical exotic Xi --3/2 baryon with S=-2, I=3 / 2, and a quark content of (dsdsu-bar). At the same mass, a peak is observed in the Xi - pi + spectrum which is a candidate for the Xi 03/2 member of this isospin quartet with a quark content of (dsusd-bar). The corresponding antibaryon spectra also show enhancements at the same invariant mass

    Post-stroke inhibition of induced NADPH oxidase type 4 prevents oxidative stress and neurodegeneration

    Ischemic stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide. Only one moderately effective therapy exists, albeit with contraindications that exclude 90% of the patients. This medical need contrasts with a high failure rate of more than 1,000 pre-clinical drug candidates for stroke therapies. Thus, there is a need for translatable mechanisms of neuroprotection and more rigid thresholds of relevance in pre-clinical stroke models. One such candidate mechanism is oxidative stress. However, antioxidant approaches have failed in clinical trials, and the significant sources of oxidative stress in stroke are unknown. We here identify NADPH oxidase type 4 (NOX4) as a major source of oxidative stress and an effective therapeutic target in acute stroke. Upon ischemia, NOX4 was induced in human and mouse brain. Mice deficient in NOX4 (Nox4(-/-)) of either sex, but not those deficient for NOX1 or NOX2, were largely protected from oxidative stress, blood-brain-barrier leakage, and neuronal apoptosis, after both transient and permanent cerebral ischemia. This effect was independent of age, as elderly mice were equally protected. Restoration of oxidative stress reversed the stroke-protective phenotype in Nox4(-/-) mice. Application of the only validated low-molecular-weight pharmacological NADPH oxidase inhibitor, VAS2870, several hours after ischemia was as protective as deleting NOX4. The extent of neuroprotection was exceptional, resulting in significantly improved long-term neurological functions and reduced mortality. NOX4 therefore represents a major source of oxidative stress and novel class of drug target for stroke therapy

    System size and centrality dependence of the balance function in A+A collisions at sqrt[sNN]=17.2 GeV

    Electric charge correlations were studied for p+p, C+C, Si+Si, and centrality selected Pb+Pb collisions at sqrt[sNN]=17.2 GeV with the NA49 large acceptance detector at the CERN SPS. In particular, long-range pseudorapidity correlations of oppositely charged particles were measured using the balance function method. The width of the balance function decreases with increasing system size and centrality of the reactions. This decrease could be related to an increasing delay of hadronization in central Pb+Pb collisions

    The impact of the investigational human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) F4/AS01(B) vaccine on HIV-1 viral load (VL) was evaluated in antiretroviral therapy (ART)-naive HIV-1 infected adults.This phase IIb, observer-blind study (NCT01218113), included ART-naive HIV-1 infected adults aged 18 to 55 years. Participants were randomized to receive 2 (F4/AS01(B)_2 group, N=64) or 3 (F4/AS01(B)_3 group, N=62) doses of F4/AS01(B) or placebo (control group, N=64) at weeks 0, 4, and 28. Efficacy (HIV-1 VL, CD4(+) T-cell count, ART initiation, and HIV-related clinical events), safety, and immunogenicity (antibody and T-cell responses) were evaluated during 48 weeks.At week 48, based on a mixed model, no statistically significant difference in HIV-1 VL change from baseline was demonstrated between F4/AS01(B)_2 and control group (0.073 log(10)copies/mL [97.5% confidence interval (CI): -0.088; 0.235]), or F4/AS01(B)_3 and control group (-0.096 log(10)copies/mL [97.5% CI: -0.257; 0.065]). No differences between groups were observed in HIV-1 VL change, CD4(+) T-cell count, ART initiation, or HIV-related clinical events at intermediate timepoints. Among F4/AS01(B) recipients, the most frequent solicited symptoms were pain at injection site (252/300 doses), fatigue (137/300 doses), myalgia (105/300 doses), and headache (90/300 doses). Twelve serious adverse events were reported in 6 participants; 1 was considered vaccine-related (F4/AS01(B)_2 group: angioedema). F4/AS01(B) induced polyfunctional F4-specific CD4(+) T-cells, but had no significant impact on F4-specific CD8(+) T-cell and anti-F4 antibody levels.F4/AS01(B) had a clinically acceptable safety profile, induced F4-specific CD4(+) T-cell responses, but did not reduce HIV-1 VL, impact CD4(+) T-cells count, delay ART initiation, or prevent HIV-1 related clinical events

    Hybrid localization with temporal post-processing

    No full text
    Precise localization of mobile devices is a promising and challenging task. Due to multipath propagation state of the art localization techniques provide only coarse position estimates. An approach to improve position estimates consists in hybrid localization, i.e., in combining several coarse position estimates to obtain one better position estimate. The position estimates to be combined can stem from different spatial measurements taken at the same time instant or from the same spatial measurement performed at different time instants

    Redundant inertial-aided GBAS for civil aviation

    No full text
    In this article, we investigate the impact of redundant MEMS-IMU on a loosely coupled INS/GBAS system. Therefore, we consider and analyze the combined performance of three identically and orthogonally mounted low-cost IMUs. It is shown that due to the redundancy, the INS based position error is reduced by an average factor of two. In conventional GBAS, no position solution can be obtained while GPS is no available which lead to a full system failure. It is demonstrated that our redundant INS/GBAS integration sufficiently bridges GPS outages up to 10 seconds. Hence, the system availability is significantly improved. Additionally, an integrity concept is introduced providing integrity information even in the case where no GPS solution is available. This is essential for all safety-of-life applications such as civil aviation. We analyze our concept both, analytically and by Monte-Carlo Simulations. Our investigations clearly show that the robustness of the GBAS can be dramatically increased while maintaining low-costs and low-complexity

    Detection of DME Ranging Faults with INS Coupling

    No full text
    In order to guarantee availability and continuity in Alternative Position Navigation and Timing (APNT), inertial systems are considered to coast the navigation position in case of navaids coverage gaps. For instance, DME/DME/Inertial (DDI) is currently considered for RNAV 1.0 operations. However, in order to support future RNP operations, the accuracy is not the only requirement to be fulfilled and other safety checks and integrity measures must be provided. This work analyses different fault detection mechanism for a multi-DME/Inertial system based on the innovation sequence of a Kalman filter. We aim to detect both single bias and ramp type fault profiles using snapshot and sequential test statistics.We evaluate the algorithms using our simulation framework based on real DME locations and realistic sensor error models
