Charges of twisted branes: the exceptional cases
The charges of the twisted D-branes for the two exceptional cases (SO(8) with
the triality automorphism and E_6 with charge conjugation) are determined. To
this end the corresponding NIM-reps are expressed in terms of the fusion rules
of the invariant subalgebras. As expected the charge groups are found to agree
with those characterising the untwisted branes.Comment: 15 page
A New Concept for Kilotonne Scale Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers
We develop a novel Time Projection Chamber (TPC) concept suitable for deployment in kilotonne-scale detectors, with a charge-readout system free from reconstruction ambiguities, and a robust TPC design that reduces high-voltage risks while increasing the coverage of the light-collection system and maximizing the active volume. This novel concept could be used as a far detector module in the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). For the charge-readout system, we used the charge-collection pixels and associated application-specific integrated circuits currently being developed for the liquid argon (LAr) component of the DUNE Near Detector design, ArgonCube. In addition, we divided the TPC into a number of shorter drift volumes, reducing the total voltage used to drift the ionization electrons, and minimizing the stored energy per TPC. Segmenting the TPC also contains scintillation light, allowing for precise trigger localization and a more expansive light-readout system. Furthermore, the design opens the possibility of replacing or upgrading components. These augmentations could substantially improve the reliability and the sensitivity, particularly for low-energy signals, in comparison to traditional monolithic LArTPCs with projective-wire charge readouts
BlocKit:A physical kit for materializing and designing for blockchain infrastructure
Blockchain is a disruptive technology which has significantly challenged assumptions that underpin financial institutions, and has provoked innovation strategies that have the potential to change many aspects of the digital economy. However, because of its novelty and complexity, mental models of blockchain technology are difficult to acquire. Building on embodied cognition theories and material centered-design, we report an innovative approach for the design of BlocKit, a physical three-dimensional kit for materializing blockchain infrastructure and its key entities. Through an engagement with different materials such as clay, paper, or transparent containers we identified important properties of these entities and materialized them through physical artifacts. BlocKit was evaluated by 15 blockchain experts with findings indicating its value for expertsâ high level of engagement in communicating about, and designing for blockchain infrastructure. Our study advances an innovative approach for the design of such kits, an initial vocabulary to talk about them, and design implications intended to inspire HCI researchers to engage in designing for infrastructures

The impact of the IGF-1 system of cancer cells on radiation response Ăą An in vitro study
Background: Overexpression of the insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R) is associated with increased cell proliferation, differentiation, transformation, and tumorigenicity. Additionally, signaling involved in the resistance of cancer cells to radiotherapy originates from IGF-1R. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of the IGF-1 system in the radiation response and further evaluate its effect on the expression of DNA repair pathway genes. Methods: To inhibit the IGF-1 system, we stably transfected the Caco-2 cell line to express a kinase-deficient IGF-1R mutant. We then studied the effects of this mutation on cell growth, the response to radiation, and clonogenic survival, as well as using a cell viability assay to examine DNA damage and repair. Finally, we performed immunofluorescence for ĂÂł-H2AX to examine double-strand DNA breaks and evaluated the expression of 84 key genes involved in DNA repair with a real-time PCR array. Results: Mutant IGF-1R cells exhibited significantly blunted cell growth and viability, compared to wild-type cells, as well as reduced clonogenic survival after ĂÂł-irradiation. However, mutant IGF-1R cells did not show any significant delays in the repair of radiation-induced DNA double-strand breaks. Furthermore, expression of mutant IGF-1R significantly down-regulated the mRNA levels of BRCA2, a major protein involved in homologous recombination DNA repair. Conclusion: These results indicate that blocking the IGF-1R-mediated signaling cascade, through the expression of a kinase-deficient IGF-1R mutant, reduces cell growth and sensitizes cancer cells to ionizing radiation. Therefore, the IGF-1R system could be a potential target to enhance radio-sensitivity and the efficacy of cancer treatments. Benign Thyroid Diseases: Are There Gender-Specific Differences for Diagnosis and Treatment of Nontoxic Thyroid Nodules? Results from a 4-Year Retrospective Analysis of an Endocrine Tumor Board
Introduction: Benign nodular goiters are endemic in Germany and diagnostic thyroidectomy is one of the most frequent surgical procedures. Less than 10% result in a malignant finding which is a poor ratio in comparison to other European countries. There is a female preponderance in almost all thyroid pathologies according to the current literature but not much is known concerning gender-specific differences in thyroid nodules. Objective: We aimed at finding gender-specific differences in diagnosis and treatment of nontoxic thyroid nodules and focused on preoperative workup as well as cytological and histological findings of patients with solitary and multinodular nontoxic goiters. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 392 cases out of 693 thyroid cases managed interdisciplinarily by the endocrine board of a university center between January 2015 and December 2018 (4 years). Results: The combination of fine needle biopsy and interdisciplinary case discussion resulted in a rate of malignancy of 28.9% in patients undergoing surgery for solitary and multinodular nontoxic goiter. Although there was no significant gender-specific difference in the distributions and malignancy rates of Bethesda categories, male patients had a significantly higher malignancy rate of 40% in our collective (p = 0.04). Conclusions: Surgical treatment for male patients with suspicious hypofunctioning thyroid nodules should be favored. However, well-designed prospective studies are required to investigate gender-specific recommendations for the treatment of benign thyroid diseases in the future
Rejecting cosmic background for exclusive charged current quasi elastic neutrino interaction studies with Liquid Argon TPCs; a case study with the MicroBooNE detector
Cosmic ray (CR) interactions can be a challenging source of background for neutrino oscillation and cross-section measurements in surface detectors. We present methods for CR rejection in measurements of charged-current quasielastic-like (CCQE-like) neutrino interactions, with a muon and a proton in the final state, measured using liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). Using a sample of cosmic data collected with the MicroBooNE detector, mixed with simulated neutrino scattering events, a set of event selection criteria is developed that produces an event sample with minimal contribution from CR background. Depending on the selection criteria used a purity between 50 and 80% can be achieved with a signal selection efficiency between 50 and 25%, with higher purity coming at the expense of lower efficiency. While using a specific dataset and selection criteria values optimized for the MicroBooNE detector, the concepts presented here are generic and can be adapted for various studies of exclusive ΜΌ CCQE interactions in LArTPCs
