    Periodontal response to two intracanal medicaments in replanted monkey incisors

    Intracanal medicaments are recommended for use in replanted teeth to inhibit inflammatory root resorption. This study compared the effect of calcium hydroxide (Pulpdent (R)) and a corticosteroid-antibiotic paste (Ledermix (R)) on periodontal healing and root resorption following replantation. Incisors of eight Macaca fascicularis monkeys were extracted, stored dry for 15 min and replanted. After I I days, root canals in two adjacent maxillary incisors were treated with one medicament and contralateral incisors with the other medicament, or left as untreated controls. Animals were sacrificed 8 weeks later and the teeth prepared for histomorphometric evaluation of periodontal ligament inflammation and root resorption. Periodontal ligament inflammation and inflammatory root resorption were markedly inhibited by both calcium hydroxide and corticosteroid-antibiotic relative to untreated controls. Replacement resorption was lowest in the corticosteroid-antibiotic group, and significantly (P <0.05) more normal periodontal ligament was present in this group (79.6) than in calcium hydroxide and control groups (64.6 and 62.7, respectively). Treatment with the corticosteroid-antibiotic inhibited inflammatory resorption and was slightly more effective than calcium hydroxide in producing a periodontal healing response

    Consensus recommendations for the use of automated insulin delivery technologies in clinical practice

    The significant and growing global prevalence of diabetes continues to challenge people with diabetes (PwD), healthcare providers, and payers. While maintaining near-normal glucose levels has been shown to prevent or delay the progression of the long-term complications of diabetes, a significant proportion of PwD are not attaining their glycemic goals. During the past 6 years, we have seen tremendous advances in automated insulin delivery (AID) technologies. Numerous randomized controlled trials and real-world studies have shown that the use of AID systems is safe and effective in helping PwD achieve their long-term glycemic goals while reducing hypoglycemia risk. Thus, AID systems have recently become an integral part of diabetes management. However, recommendations for using AID systems in clinical settings have been lacking. Such guided recommendations are critical for AID success and acceptance. All clinicians working with PwD need to become familiar with the available systems in order to eliminate disparities in diabetes quality of care. This report provides much-needed guidance for clinicians who are interested in utilizing AIDs and presents a comprehensive listing of the evidence payers should consider when determining eligibility criteria for AID insurance coverage

    Evaluation of Various Methods for Roasting Frozen Turkeys

    Frozen turkeys were roasted to a lower than normal final temperature (71.1°C, 160°F) by one of the following methods: (1) foil tent, 93.3°C (200°F) oven; (2) foil wrap, 93.3°C (200°F) oven; (3) foil tent, 162.8°C (325°F) oven; (4) roasting bag, 176.7°C (350°F) oven; (5) foil wrap, 204.4°C (400°F) oven; or (6) microwave oven. Birds roasted by low temperature roasting methods received highest ratings for most attributes. Basted birds were preferred for all eating quality attributes. Microwave roasted birds reached final temperature fastest and with least energy consumption, but were rated low in appearance and eating qualities, and often had undesirably pink thigh joints. Turkeys inoculated with Salmonella typhimurium and Clostridium perfringens vegetative cells were essentially sterilized by all roasting methods. These methods can be considered as convenient alternatives to conventional roasting procedures

    Quercetin: a flavonoid with the potential to treat asthma

    Allergic asthma is a complex inflammatory disorder characterized by airway hyperresponsiveness, eosinophilic inflammation and hypersecretion of mucus. Current therapies include &#946;2-agonists, cysteinyl leukotriene receptor 1 antagonists and corticosteroids. Although these drugs demonstrate beneficial effects, their adverse side effects limit their long-term use. Thus, the development of new compounds with similar therapeutic activities and reduced side effects is both desirable and necessary. Natural compounds are used in some current therapies, as plant-derived metabolites can relieve disease symptoms in the same manner as allopathic medicines. Quercetin is a flavonoid that is naturally found in many fruits and vegetables and has been shown to exert multiple biological effects in experimental models, including the reduction of major symptoms of asthma: bronchial hyperactivity, mucus production and airway inflammation. In this review, we discuss results from the literature that illustrate the potential of quercetin to treat asthma and its exacerbations.A asma alérgica é uma doença inflamatória complexa caracterizada por hiperresponsividade das vias aéreas, inflamação eosinofílica e hipersecreção de muco. Embora estes fármacos demonstrem efeitos benéficos, seus efeitos adversos limitam seus usos a longo prazo. Assim, o desenvolvimento de novos compostos com atividades terapêuticas similares e reduzido efeitos adversos é tanto desejável quanto necessário. Compostos naturais podem ser utilizados nas terapias atuais, uma vez que metabólitos derivados de plantas são capazes de aliviar os sintomas de forma comparável aos medicamentos alopáticos. A quercetina é um flavonóide que ocorre naturalmente em muitas frutas e vegetais e tem mostrado vários efeitos biológicos, principalmente em modelos experimentais, incluindo a redução dos principais fenótipos da asma: hiperreatividade brônquica, produção de muco e inflamação das vias aéreas.
