Tritium beta decay with additional emission of new light bosons
We consider tritium beta decay with additional emission of light pseudoscalar or vector bosons coupling to electrons or neutrinos. The electron energy spectrum for all cases is evaluated and shown to be well estimated by approximated analytical expressions. We give the statistical sensitivity of Katrin to the mass and coupling of the new bosons, both in the standard setup of the experiment as well as for future modifications in which the full energy spectrum of tritium decay is accessible
Background reduction at the KATRIN experiment by the shifted analysing plane configuration
The KATRIN experiment aims at measuring the electron neutrino mass with a sensitivity of 0.2 eV/c after 5 years of data taking. Recently a new upper limit for the neutrino mass of 0.8 eV/c (90% CL) was obtained. To reach the design sensitivity, a reduction of the background rate by one order of magnitude is required. The shifted analysing plane (SAP) configuration exploits a specific shaping of the electric and magnetic fields in the KATRIN main spectrometer to reduce the spectrometer background by a factor of two. We discuss the general idea of the SAP configuration and describe the main features of this novel measurement mode
Kassiopeia: A Modern, Extensible C++ Particle Tracking Package
The Kassiopeia particle tracking framework is an object-oriented software
package using modern C++ techniques, written originally to meet the needs of
the KATRIN collaboration. Kassiopeia features a new algorithmic paradigm for
particle tracking simulations which targets experiments containing complex
geometries and electromagnetic fields, with high priority put on calculation
efficiency, customizability, extensibility, and ease of use for novice
programmers. To solve Kassiopeia's target physics problem the software is
capable of simulating particle trajectories governed by arbitrarily complex
differential equations of motion, continuous physics processes that may in part
be modeled as terms perturbing that equation of motion, stochastic processes
that occur in flight such as bulk scattering and decay, and stochastic surface
processes occuring at interfaces, including transmission and reflection
effects. This entire set of computations takes place against the backdrop of a
rich geometry package which serves a variety of roles, including initialization
of electromagnetic field simulations and the support of state-dependent
algorithm-swapping and behavioral changes as a particle's state evolves. Thanks
to the very general approach taken by Kassiopeia it can be used by other
experiments facing similar challenges when calculating particle trajectories in
electromagnetic fields. It is publicly available at

Цель работы заключается в извлечении из медицинских снимков геометрических параметров сердца и разделение изображения на сегменты с помощью полуавтоматической сегментации и построение трехмерной модели сердца пациента. Задача состоит в проектировании и реализации программного приложения для преобразования набора изображений областей сердца в 3D модель.The purpose of the work is to extract from medical images the geometric parameters of the heart and the image is divided into segments using semi-automatic segmentation and the construction of a three-dimensional model of the patient's heart. Antibiotic resistance and clonal diversity of invasive Staphylococcus aureus in the rural Ashanti Region, Ghana.
BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus is among the most common pathogens isolated from blood cultures in Ghana; yet the epidemiology of blood infections in rural settings is poorly described. This study aims to investigate antimicrobial susceptibility and clonal diversity of S. aureus causing bloodstream infections in two hospitals in the Ashanti Region, Ghana. METHODS: Blood cultures were performed for all febrile patients (≥37.5 °C) on hospital admission. Antibiotic susceptibility testing for S. aureus isolates was carried out by the VITEK 2 system. Multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect S. aureus-specific nuc gene, Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL), and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA)-specific mecA and mecC genes. The population structure of S. aureus was assessed by spa typing. RESULTS: In total, 9,834 blood samples were cultured, out of which 0.6% (n = 56) were positive for S. aureus. Multidrug resistance (MDR) was detected in 35.7% (n = 20) of the S. aureus strains, of which one was a MRSA. The highest rate of antibiotic resistance was seen for commonly available antibiotics, including penicillin (n = 55; 98.2%), tetracycline (n = 32; 57.1%) and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (n = 26; 46.4%). Of all S. aureus strains, 75.0% (n = 42) carried the PVL-encoding genes. We found 25 different spa types with t355 (n = 11; 19.6%), t314 (n = 8; 14.3%), t084 (n = 8; 14.3%) and t311 (n = 5; 8.9%) being predominant. CONCLUSION: The study exhibited an alarmingly large level of antibiotic resistance to locally available antibiotics. The frequency of genetically diverse and PVL-positive methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) was high and could represent a reservoir for the emergence of virulent PVL-positive MRSA clones
Verbal instructions override the meaning of facial expressions
Psychological research has long acknowledged that facial expressions can implicitly trigger affective
psychophysiological responses. However, whether verbal information can alter the meaning of facial
emotions and corresponding response patterns has not been tested. This study examined emotional
facial expressions as cues for instructed threat-of-shock or safety, with a focus on defensive responding.
In addition, reversal instructions were introduced to test the impact of explicit safety instructions on
fear extinction. Forty participants were instructed that they would receive unpleasant electric shocks,
for instance, when viewing happy but not angry faces. In a second block, instructions were reversed
(e.g., now angry faces cued shock). Happy, neutral, and angry faces were repeatedly presented, and
auditory startle probes were delivered in half of the trials. The defensive startle reflex was potentiated
for threat compared to safety cues. Importantly, this effect occurred regardless of whether threat
was cued by happy or angry expressions. Although the typical pattern of response habituation was
observed, defense activation to newly instructed threat cues remained significantly enhanced in the
second part of the experiment, and it was more pronounced in more socially anxious participants.
Thus, anxious individuals did not exhibit more pronounced defense activation compared to less anxious
participants, but their defense activation was more persistent
European achievements in soil remediation and brownfield redevelopment
With the aim of sharing best practices of soil restoration and management of contaminated sites among European countries and to raise awareness of the enormous efforts made to succeed in such difficult commitment, the experts of the EIONET Soil working group on contaminated sites and brownfields agreed to gather their country's interesting cases and successful stories of recovery of contaminated areas. This second edition of the monograph presents seventeen new cases from eight European countries and its Regions of how polluted sites and brownfields have been remediated like new methodologies of sustainable restoration of the subsoil, development of innovative technologies, and funding mechanisms etc. These stories have been compiled to present what national, regional or local governments are doing to improve the quality of the environment and the living conditions of their population. A second aim is the promotion of best practices among industry, consultancies and business operators.JRC.D.3-Land Resource
