Securing Networks of Information Age
Internet and IT devices are being used for business and entertainment more frequently. Internet has been becoming a vital part of social fabric. Threats to Internet and other complex commercial networks are solid and growing. Globalization and the need for interoperability complicates security of IT Networks and Internet. Cyber threats have an important potential damage capacity. Proactive security methodologies are needed to protect valuable information. According to the situation described above, the purpose of this paper is to examine the current trends in network security, and to propose a roadmap for protecting information from cyber threats
Factors associated with substance use among preclinical medical students in Turkey: a cross-sectional study
Introduction: Medical students experience high levels of stress due to their rigorous training, which can negatively affect their mental health. This study aimed to investigate substance use habits of medical students at Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa and the association on their mental health and demographic factors.
Methods: This cross-sectional survey study was conducted in March-April 2022 among preclinical medical students (years 1-3 of a 6-year program). A confidential, anonymous online survey consisting of four sections on sociodemographic and educational characteristics, nicotine use and dependence [Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND)], alcohol use [Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT)], mental health status [12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12)], was distributed to 1131 students via WhatsApp and Telegram text messages. Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis tests compared variables’ distribution in the questionnaire categories. Spearman's correlation assessed associations between scales. Significance was p < 0.05.
Results: The study included 190 medical students. A total of 26.3% of the participants were smokers, with 8.4% showing moderate to high levels of nicotine dependence. An estimated 45.8% and 8.4% reported low-risk consumption and risky usage of alcohol, respectively. There were statistically significant associations between substance use and demographic factors such as sex, GPA, and religious belief. The study found a statistically significant correlation between FTND scores and GHQ-12 scores, and, between FTND scores and AUDIT scores.
Conclusion: The findings of this study will inform the development of interventions to improve the mental health and academic performance of medical students at Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa. Furthermore, it will raise awareness about the importance of addressing substance use among medical students in Turkey

Comparison of laminoplasty and laminectomy with fusion: an umbrella review of postoperative outcomes
We searched for systematic reviews and meta-analyses comparing the outcomes of CLP and PCF surgeries in patients with degenerative lumbar spine diseases. The population (P) was defined as patients of any age with cervical spondylotic myelopathy, or degenerative spine disease. Intervention (I) was cervical spinal decompression surgery, and comparators (C) were CLP and PCF. The outcomes of interest (O) were blood loss, cervical curvature index, cervical lordosis, incidence of axial pain, incidence of C5 palsy, nurick grade, operation time, overall complication rate, postoperative Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score, postoperative Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score, postoperative - preoperative JOA score, reoperation rate, and postoperative range of motion (ROM). Adjusting to the Reign of Webinars: Viewpoint
BackgroundWith the integration of COVID-19 into our lives, the way events are organized has changed. The Cerrahpaşa Neuroscience Days held on May 8-9, 2021, was one of the conferences that was affected. The annual conference of the student-based Cerrahpaşa Neuroscience Society transitioned to the internet for the first time and had the premise of going international.
ObjectiveWith this study, we aim to both discuss how a virtual conference is organized and perceived, and where our conference stands within the literature as a completely student-organized event.
MethodsThe conference was planned in accordance with virtual standards and promoted to primarily medical schools. During the execution, there were no major issues. The feedback was collected via a form developed with Google Forms.
ResultsOut of 2195 registrations, 299 qualified to receive a certificate. The feedback forms revealed a general satisfaction; the overall quality of the event was rated an average of 4.6 out of 5, and the ratings of various Likert scale–based questions were statistically analyzed. Open-ended questions provided improvement suggestions for future events.
ConclusionsThe virtual Cerrahpaşa Neuroscience Days was a success in organization and received positive feedback from the participants. We aim to ground future events on this experience

Compressive syndromes of the cervical arteries caused by musculoskeletal structures include bow hunter's syndrome, beauty parlour stroke syndrome, carotid compression by the hyoid bone, carotid compression by the digastric muscle and Eagle syndrome. They are a rare but increasingly recognised group of syndromes, so a high level of suspicion is needed so the diagnosis is not missed. The diagnosis is typically based on a combination of clinical history and advanced imaging investigations. Compression of the arteries may be static (only provoked by compression) or dynamic (exaggerated by movement), and this should be considered when selecting imaging studies. Symptoms resulting from vertebrobasilar insufficiency or ischaemia of areas supplied by the internal carotid artery are caused by compression of the vertebral artery and the internal carotid artery respectively. Surgical procedures are the preferred treatment for most of these syndromes
Tracing Topics and Trends in Drug-Resistant Epilepsy Research Using a Natural Language Processing-Based Topic Modeling Approach
Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder affecting over 70 million people worldwide. Although many patients achieve seizure control with anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs), 30%-40% develop drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), where seizures persist despite adequate trials of AEDs. DRE is associated with reduced quality of life, increased mortality and morbidity, and greater socioeconomic challenges. The continued intractability of DRE has fueled exponential growth in research that aims to understand and treat this serious condition. However, synthesizing this vast and continuously expanding DRE literature to derive insights poses considerable difficulties for investigators and clinicians. Conventional review methods are often prolonged, hampering the timely application of findings. More-efficient approaches to analyze the voluminous research are needed. In this study, we utilize a natural language processing (NLP)-based topic modeling approach to examine the DRE publication landscape, uncovering key topics and trends. Documents were retrieved from Scopus, preprocessed, and modeled using BERTopic. This technique employs transformer models like BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) for contextual understanding, thereby enabling accurate topic categorization. Analysis revealed 18 distinct topics spanning various DRE research areas. The 10 most common topics, including AEDs, Neuromodulation Therapy, and Genomics, were examined further. Cannabidiol, Functional Brain Mapping, and Autoimmune Encephalitis emerged as the hottest topics of the current decade, and were examined further. This NLP methodology provided valuable insights into the evolving DRE research landscape, revealing shifting priorities and declining interests. Moreover, we demonstrate an efficient approach to synthesizing and visualizing patterns within extensive literature that could be applied to other research fields
