"Two bedrooms, two toothbrushes" : a qualitative study of shared care parenting : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Psychology at Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand
Shared care is a post-separation family living arrangement whereby the children
move between the parents living in two separate houses. This custody arrangement
has grown more popular in the last few decades, although little is known about a
young person’s perspective of living shared care. The present study examined the
views of 12 young adults who had experienced shared care family life. Thematic
analysis revealed five broad themes. Firstly, “The catalyst: parental separation”
focuses on the actual separation event, what they remembered, how it was
communicated and what they would advise parents contemplating separation. The
second theme ‘logistics: two homes, one bag” explores practical aspects of shared
care; how participants adapted to two houses and their likes and dislikes about the
arrangement. The third theme explores ‘relationships: many and varied’ to discuss
how shared care impacted relationships with each parent; the co-parenting
relationship and the complexity of introducing new members into the family. The
fourth theme examines “wellbeing changes” including mental and emotional
wellbeing as well as financial changes participants experienced. The last theme
“reflections” uses a strength based perspective to explore positive aspects, attributes
and values that the participants attributed to their shared care family life. Participants
strongly identified with having two separate valid homes. They adapted easily to
shared care and found it unremarkable. They sometimes found the living
arrangement inconvenient and the bag or suitcase that went between the two homes
was a symbolic and evocative representation of living in shared care. Participants
acquired personal attributes including: resilience, independence, compassion and
adaptability. They also acquired enhanced interpersonal skills through managing
different networks of people. Family life was important to them and they enjoyed
warm relationships with both their parents. Whilst they discarded the traditional
nuclear family convention, they embraced a fluid, versatile, encompassing and
relational view of family view

CETA truck and EVA restraint system
The Crew Equipment Translation Aid (CETA) experiment is an extravehicular activity (EVA) Space Transportation System (STS) based flight experiment which will explore various modes of transporting astronauts and light equipment for Space Station Freedom (SSF). The basic elements of CETA are: (1) two 25 foot long sections of monorail, which will be EVA assembled in the STS cargo bay to become a single 50 ft. rail called the track; (2) a wheeled baseplate called the truck which rolls along the track and can accept three cart concepts; and (3) the three carts which are designated manual, electric, and mechanical. The three carts serve as the astronaut restraint and locomotive interfaces with the track. The manual cart is powered by the astronaut grasping the track's handrail and pulling himself along. The electric cart is operated by an astronaut turning a generator which powers the electric motor and drives the cart. The mechanical cart is driven by a Bendix type transmission and is similar in concept to a man-propelled railroad cart. During launch and landing, the truck is attached to the deployable track by means of EVA removable restraint bolts and held in position by a system of retractable shims. These shims are positioned on the exterior of the rail for launch and landing and rotate out of the way for the duration of the experiment. The shims are held in position by strips of Velcro nap, which rub against the sides of the shim and exert a tailored force. The amount of force required to rotate the shims was a major EVA concern, along with operational repeatability and extreme temperature effects. The restraint system was tested in a thermal-vac and vibration environment and was shown to meet all of the initial design requirements. Using design inputs from the astronauts who will perform the EVA, CETA evolved through an iterative design process and represented a cooperative effort
Predicting H{\alpha} emission line galaxy counts for future galaxy redshift surveys
Knowledge of the number density of H emitting galaxies is vital for
assessing the scientific impact of the Euclid and WFIRST missions. In this work
we present predictions from a galaxy formation model, Galacticus, for the
cumulative number counts of H-emitting galaxies. We couple Galacticus
to three different dust attenuation methods and examine the counts using each
method. A minimisation approach is used to compare the model
predictions to observed galaxy counts and calibrate the dust parameters. We
find that weak dust attenuation is required for the Galacticus counts to be
broadly consistent with the observations, though the optimum dust parameters
return large values for , suggesting that further calibration of
Galacticus is necessary. The model predictions are also consistent with
observed estimates for the optical depth and the H luminosity function.
Finally we present forecasts for the redshift distributions and number counts
for two Euclid-like and one WFIRST-like survey. For a Euclid-like survey with
redshift range and H blended
flux limit of we
predict a number density between 3900--4800 galaxies per square degree. For a
WFIRST-like survey with redshift range and blended
flux limit of we
predict a number density between 10400--15200 galaxies per square degree.Comment: 21 pages (including appendix), 12 figures, 6 tables. Accepted b

Halo detection via large-scale Bayesian inference
We present a proof-of-concept of a novel and fully Bayesian methodology
designed to detect halos of different masses in cosmological observations
subject to noise and systematic uncertainties. Our methodology combines the
previously published Bayesian large-scale structure inference algorithm, HADES,
and a Bayesian chain rule (the Blackwell-Rao Estimator), which we use to
connect the inferred density field to the properties of dark matter halos. To
demonstrate the capability of our approach we construct a realistic galaxy mock
catalogue emulating the wide-area 6-degree Field Galaxy Survey, which has a
median redshift of approximately 0.05. Application of HADES to the catalogue
provides us with accurately inferred three-dimensional density fields and
corresponding quantification of uncertainties inherent to any cosmological
observation. We then use a cosmological simulation to relate the amplitude of
the density field to the probability of detecting a halo with mass above a
specified threshold. With this information we can sum over the HADES density
field realisations to construct maps of detection probabilities and demonstrate
the validity of this approach within our mock scenario. We find that the
probability of successful of detection of halos in the mock catalogue increases
as a function of the signal-to-noise of the local galaxy observations. Our
proposed methodology can easily be extended to account for more complex
scientific questions and is a promising novel tool to analyse the cosmic
large-scale structure in observations.Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS following
