C-MOS array design techniques: SUMC multiprocessor system study
The current capabilities of LSI techniques for speed and reliability, plus the possibilities of assembling large configurations of LSI logic and storage elements, have demanded the study of multiprocessors and multiprocessing techniques, problems, and potentialities. Evaluated are three previous systems studies for a space ultrareliable modular computer multiprocessing system, and a new multiprocessing system is proposed that is flexibly configured with up to four central processors, four 1/0 processors, and 16 main memory units, plus auxiliary memory and peripheral devices. This multiprocessor system features a multilevel interrupt, qualified S/360 compatibility for ground-based generation of programs, virtual memory management of a storage hierarchy through 1/0 processors, and multiport access to multiple and shared memory units
Graded requirement for the zygotic terminal gene, tailless, in the brain and tail region of the Drosophila embryo
We have used hypomorphic and null tailless (tll) alleles to carry out a detailed analysis of the effects of the lack of tll gene activity on anterior and posterior regions of the embryo. The arrangement of tll alleles into a continuous series clarifies the relationship between the anterior and posterior functions of the tll gene and indicates that there is a graded sensitivity of anterior and posterior structures to a decrease in tll gene activity. With the deletion of both anterior and posterior pattern domains in tll null embryos, there is a poleward expansion of the remaining pattern. Using anti-horseradish peroxidase staining, we show that the formation of the embryonic brain requires tll. A phenotypic and genetic study of other pattern mutants places the tll gene within the hierarchy of maternal and zygotic genes required for the formation of the normal body pattern. Analysis of mutants doubly deficient in tll and maternal terminal genes is consistent with the idea that these genes act together in a common pathway to establish the domains at opposite ends of the embryo. We propose that tll establishes anterior and posterior subdomains (acron and tail regions, respectively) within the larger pattern regions affected by the maternal terminal genes

Reducing total fulfillment at costs at Amazon EU through network design optimization
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering; and, (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management; in conjunction with the Leaders for Manufacturing Program at MIT, 2007.Includes bibliographical references (p. 73-74).A key supply chain management issue encountered by any business requiring a distribution system is in designing its distribution network. A distribution network configuration has both direct and indirect ongoing effects on how a firm operates influencing everything from supplier relationships and contracts to customer interface. A configuration affects both day-to-day operational and longer range strategic and tactical decision-making. From a pure cost perspective, a configuration has a significant impact on total fulfillment costs. The effects of network configuration as well as the challenges and value behind the application of network design optimization techniques are well-illustrated by my 6-month experience working for the largest online retail distributor, Amazon.com, in their European (EU) operations. This paper further documents the process followed in identifying areas for improvement in Amazon's current EU fulfillment networks for the purpose of enabling total fulfillment cost reduction. The challenges and results from my experience are similarly included.(cont.) Two main projects were ultimately selected and documented in this paper: The first was aimed at minimizing transportation costs around the existing UK network configuration, while the second was targeted at minimizing total fulfillment costs through the alteration of EU network designs through the focused adjustment of product and inventory distributions. The first project has to date enabled significant minimization of UK transportation costs. The second project dealt with two complicated mathematical formulations ultimately intended for optimization, one of which is not yet covered in literature. In this case, further research and investigation is required for its practical implementation; nonetheless, the developed formulation was applied to a simplified scenario for the purpose of future study including validation and extension. The ultimate objective of this paper however is to demonstrate the hidden potential and value behind the application of underutilized analytical techniques to network design through the tailored development and implementation of practical decision-support systems.by Ken Merriam.M.B.A.S.M
New Consequences of Induced Transparency in a Double-Lambda scheme: Destructive Interference In Four-wave Mixing
We investigate a four-state system interacting with long and short laser
pulses in a weak probe beam approximation. We show that when all lasers are
tuned to the exact unperturbed resonances, part of the four-wave mixing (FWM)
field is strongly absorbed. The part which is not absorbed has the exact
intensity required to destructively interfere with the excitation pathway
involved in producing the FWM state. We show that with this three-photon
destructive interference, the conversion efficiency can still be as high as
25%. Contrary to common belief,our calculation shows that this process, where
an ideal one-photon electromagnetically induced transparency is established, is
not most suitable for high efficiency conversion. With appropriate
phase-matching and propagation distance, and when the three-photon destructive
interference does not occur, we show that the photon flux conversion efficiency
is independent of probe intensity and can be close to 100%. In addition, we
show clearly that the conversion efficiency is not determined by the maximum
atomic coherence between two lower excited states, as commonly believed. It is
the combination of phase-matching and constructive interference involving the
two terms arising in producing the mixing wave that is the key element for the
optimized FWM generation. Indeed, in this scheme no appreciable excited state
is produced, so that the atomic coherence between states |0> and |2> is always

Coherence-controlled transparency and far-from-degenerate parametric gain in a strongly-absorbing Doppler-broadened medium
An inversionless gain of anti-Stokes radiation above the oscillation
threshold in an optically-dense far-from-degenerate double-Lambda
Doppler-broadened medium accompanied by Stokes gain is predicted. The outcomes
are illustrated with numerical simulations applied to sodium dimer vapor.
Optical switching from absorption to gain via transparency controlled by a
small variation of the medium and of the driving radiation parameters which are
at a level less than one photon per molecule is shown. Related video/audio

Generation of continuous-wave THz radiation by use of quantum interference
We propose a scheme for generation of continuous-wave THz radiation. The
scheme requires a medium where three discrete states in a
configuration can be selected, with the THz-frequency transition between the
two lower metastable states. We consider the propagation of three-frequency
continuous-wave electromagnetic (e.m.) radiation through a medium.
Under resonant excitation, the medium absorption can be strongly reduced due to
quantum interference of transitions, while the nonlinear susceptibility is
enhanced. This leads to very efficient energy transfer between the e.m. waves
providing a possibility for THz generation. We demonstrate that the photon
conversion efficiency is approaching unity in this technique.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure
Efficient Raman Sideband Generation in a Coherent Atomic Medium
We demonstrate the efficient generation of Raman sidebands in a medium
coherently prepared in a dark state by continuous-wave low-intensity laser
radiation. Our experiment is performed in sodium vapor excited in
configuration on the D line by two laser fields of resonant frequencies
and , and probed by a third field .
First-order sidebands for frequencies , and up to the
third-order sidebands for frequency are observed. The generation
starts at a power as low as 10 microwatt for each input field. Dependencies of
the intensities of both input and generated waves on the frequency difference
(), on the frequency and on the optical

TB85: A New Potato Scab Problem in Maine
The scientific literature is filled with conflicting reports on the development of the common scab disease of potatoes and its causal organism. One unresolved question is soil reaction, once thought to be the answer in controlling this disease. Scientific studies an d practical experience over a long period had shown that acid soils having a pH of approximately 5.3 or below usually did not support common scab development, though sporadic and unexplained reports of disease occurrence in these soils were observed. In the late 1950s, however, such reports became more frequent in Maine and before the mid-1960s, losses relate d to scabb y potatoes growing in acid soils were common. Throughout this period overall crop losses from the disease were minimal even though individual growers sometimes lost a large par t of their crop. During the dry 1970 growing season, however, a disease survey estimated that up to 5% of the Maine crop was scabby.
