    Diphoton Signals for Large Extra Dimensions at the Tevatron and CERN LHC

    We analyze the potentiality of hadron colliders to search for large extra dimensions via the production of photon pairs. The virtual exchange of Kaluza--Klein gravitons can significantly enhance this processes provided the quantum gravity scale (MSM_S) is in the TeV range. We studied in detail the subprocesses qqˉγγq \bar{q} \to \gamma \gamma and ggγγg g \to \gamma \gamma taking into account the complete Standard Model and graviton contributions as well as the unitarity constraints. We show that the Tevatron Run II will be able to probe MSM_S up to 1.5--1.9 TeV at 2σ\sigma level, while the LHC can extend this search to 5.3--6.7 TeV, depending on the number of extra dimensions

    New Cases of Universality Theorem for Gravitational Theories

    The "Universality Theorem" for gravity shows that f(R) theories (in their metric-affine formulation) in vacuum are dynamically equivalent to vacuum Einstein equations with suitable cosmological constants. This holds true for a generic (i.e. except sporadic degenerate cases) analytic function f(R) and standard gravity without cosmological constant is reproduced if f is the identity function (i.e. f(R)=R). The theorem is here extended introducing in dimension 4 a 1-parameter family of invariants R' inspired by the Barbero-Immirzi formulation of GR (which in the Euclidean sector includes also selfdual formulation). It will be proven that f(R') theories so defined are dynamically equivalent to the corresponding metric-affine f(R) theory. In particular for the function f(R)=R the standard equivalence between GR and Holst Lagrangian is obtained.Comment: 10 pages, few typos correcte

    Antibody response to heat-inactivated hepatitis B vaccine (CLB-3mg) in hemodialysis patients and occupational risk personnel: a one year follow-up

    A resposta imune contra vacina de hepatite B (CLB-3mg) foi avaliada em 59 pacientes de hemodiálise e 20 funcionários de risco em adquirir infecção. A soroconversão foi observada em 52,5% e 70,0%, respectivamente. Um ano após a primeira dose, os níveis de anticorpos anti-HBs foram determinados em 37.5% dos pacientes e 60.0% dos funcionários. Os níveis de anticorpos foram expressos em unidades de radioimunoensaio (SRU = contagem da amostra sobre o controle negativo). Considerando apenas os indivíduos que responderam à vacina, no grupo de pacientes, 38.7% tiveram resposta baixa de anticorpos (2,1 - 9,9 SRU), 32,3% resposta média e 29,0% uma resposta elevada (>; SRU), enquanto que no pessoal de risco, os valores foram 14,3%, 64,3% e 21.4%, respectivamente. Os autores sugerem o uso de vacinas de HBV com concentrações de HBsAg mais elevada ou um reforço no esquema de imunização para melhorar a resposta de anti-HBs, não só para pacientes como também para pessoas sadias.Immune response against hepatitis B vaccine (CLB 3mg) was evaluated in 59 hemodialysis patients and 20 occupational risk personnel. Seroconversion was induced in 52.5% and 70.0% respectively. Twelve months after the first dose, 37.5% of patients and 60.0% of occupational risk personnel had detectable anti-HBs level. Antibody level was expressed in sample ratio units (SRU). Considering only the responders, in the patients group 38.7% had a low anti-HBs response (2.1-9.9 SRU) 32.3% a medium response (10-99.9 SRU) and 29.0% a high response (>;100 SRU) while in occupational risk personnel these values were 14.3%, 64.3% and 21.4% respectively. The authors suggest the use of HBV vaccines with more elevated HBsAg concentration or a reinforced immunization schedule to improve the anti-HBs response not only for patients but also for healthy persons

    Long-term effectiveness of a novel intra-oral electro-stimulator for the treatment of dry mouth in patients with Sjogren's syndrome: A randomised sham-controlled feasibility study (LEONIDAS-1)

    BACKGROUND: Effective treatments for dry mouth of Sjogren's syndrome are limited and hampered by adverse effects. The aim of LEONIDAS-1 was to explore the feasibility of salivary electrostimulation in individuals with primary Sjogren's syndrome, as well as parameters required to inform the design of a future phase III trial. METHODS: Multicentre, parallel-group, double-blind, randomised sham-controlled trial in two UK centres. Participants were randomised (1:1, computer-generated) to active or sham electrostimulation. The feasibility outcomes included screening/eligibility ratio, consent, and recruitment and drop-out rates. Preliminary efficacy outcome included dry mouth visual analogue scale, Xerostomia Inventory, the EULAR Sjögren's syndrome patient reported index-Q1, and unstimulated sialometry. RESULTS: Forty-two individuals were screened, of whom 30 (71.4%) met the eligibility criteria. All eligible individuals consented to recruitment. Out of the 30 randomised participants (active n = 15, sham n = 15), 4 dropped out and 26 (13 vs. 13) completed all study visits as per protocol. Recruitment rate was 2.73 participants/month. At 6-month post-randomisation the difference in mean reduction in visual analogue scale, xerostomia inventory and EULAR Sjögren's syndrome patient reported index-Q1 scores between groups were 0.36 (95% CI: -0.84, 1.56), 3.31 (0.43, 6.18), and 0.23 (-1.17, 1.63), respectively; unstimulated salivary flow increased by a mean of 0.98 mL/15 min, all in favour of the active group. No adverse events were reported. CONCLUSION: LEONIDAS-1 results support progression to a phase III definitive randomised controlled trial of salivary electrostimulation in individuals with Sjogren's syndrome. Xerostomia inventory could be considered the primary patient-centred outcome measure and the corresponding observed treatment effect could inform the sample size of a future trial

    Comparison of extraction methods for kahweol and cafestol analysis in roasted coffee

There are discrepancies regarding the levels reported for these compounds in roasted coffee, probably due to the extraction processes. Therefore, four sample preparation methods were studied: direct hot saponification (DHS), direct cold saponification (DCS); and Bligh and Dyer (BD) or Soxhlet (SO) extraction followed by saponification. The levels of diterpenes and their dehydro derivatives obtained by high performance liquid chromatography with diode array and mass spectrometry detectors (HPLC-DAD-MS/MS) and the chromatographic profiles of roasted coffee, obtained by these four methods, were compared. DHS was more efficient for extraction, showing better separation of chromatographic peaks and levels of 930.2 (± 36.8), 113.2 (± 4.7), 568.6 (± 16.6) and 87.1 (± 3.7) mg 100 g-1 for kahweol, dehydrokahweol, cafestol and dehydrocafestol, respectively.     Emissão de metano entérico e consumo alimentar residual em bovinos Nelore.

    O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a emissão diária de metano entérico em bovinos Nelore com um ano de idade, previamente avaliados para o consumo alimentar residual (CAR). Foram avaliados 118 animais, machos e fêmeas, nascidos em 2010, provenientes do Centro APTA Bovinos de Corte-IZ/SP. O CAR foi estimado como o resíduo da equação de regressão do consumo de matéria seca (CMS) sobre o peso metabólico e o ganho médio diário (GMD) em teste pós-desmama de 110 dias de duração. Os animais foram classificados por CAR em três grupos: alto CAR (n= 36), médio CAR (n= 42) e baixo CAR (n= 40), levando-se em conta o desvio-padrão da média do CAR de cada sexo. Uma amostra representativa de 46 animais das classes alto e baixo CAR foi usada para avaliar a emissão diária de metano (CH4) por meio da metodologia do gás traçador hexafluoreto de enxofre com 7 dias consecutivos de coleta. Durante a coleta de metano o CMS foi também obtido. Apesar da diferença do CMS dos animais das duas classes de CAR, não houve diferença significativa na CH4. Quando a CH4 foi expressa em relação ao GMD, houve diferença significativa entre os animais mais e menos eficientes. Os animais mais eficientes (baixo CAR) emitem menos CH4 por kg de ganho de peso que os animais menos eficientes (alto CAR)

    Direct Signals for Large Extra Dimensions in the Production of Fermion Pairs at Linear Colliders

    We analyze the potentiality of the new generation of e+ee^+e^- linear colliders to search for large extra dimensions via the production of fermion pairs in association with Kaluza-Klein gravitons (G), i.e. e+effˉGe^+e^- \leftarrow f\bar{f}G. This process leads to a final state exhibiting a significant amount of missing energy in addition to acoplanar lepton or jet pairs. We study in detail this reaction using full tree level contibutions due to the graviton emission and the standard model backgrounds. After choosing the cuts to enhance the signal, we show that a linear collider with a center-of-mass energy of 500 GeV will be able to probe quantum gravity scales from 0.96(0.86) up to 4.1(3.3) TeV at 2(5)σ\sigma level, depending on the number of extra dimensions.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures.
