Expected exponential loss for gaze-based video and volume ground truth annotation
Many recent machine learning approaches used in medical imaging are highly
reliant on large amounts of image and ground truth data. In the context of
object segmentation, pixel-wise annotations are extremely expensive to collect,
especially in video and 3D volumes. To reduce this annotation burden, we
propose a novel framework to allow annotators to simply observe the object to
segment and record where they have looked at with a \$200 eye gaze tracker. Our
method then estimates pixel-wise probabilities for the presence of the object
throughout the sequence from which we train a classifier in semi-supervised
setting using a novel Expected Exponential loss function. We show that our
framework provides superior performances on a wide range of medical image
settings compared to existing strategies and that our method can be combined
with current crowd-sourcing paradigms as well.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figues, MICCAI 2017 - LABELS Worksho
On astrophysical solution to ultra high energy cosmic rays
We argue that an astrophysical solution to UHECR problem is viable. The
pectral features of extragalactic protons interacting with CMB are calculated
in model-independent way. Using the power-law generation spectrum as the only assumption, we analyze four features of the proton
spectrum: the GZK cutoff, dip, bump and the second dip. We found the dip,
induced by electron-positron production on CMB, as the most robust feature,
existing in energy range eV. Its shape is
stable relative to various phenomena included in calculations. The dip is well
confirmed by observations of AGASA, HiRes, Fly's Eye and Yakutsk detectors. The
best fit is reached at , with the allowed range 2.55 - 2.75. The
dip is used for energy calibration of the detectors. After the energy
calibration the fluxes and spectra of all three detectors agree perfectly, with
discrepancy between AGASA and HiRes at eV being not
statistically significant. The agreement of the dip with observations should be
considered as confirmation of UHE proton interaction with CMB. The dip has two
flattenings. The high energy flattening at eV
automatically explains ankle. The low-energy flattening at eV provides the transition to galactic cosmic rays. This transition is
studied quantitatively. The UHECR sources, AGN and GRBs, are studied in a
model-dependent way, and acceleration is discussed. Based on the agreement of
the dip with existing data, we make the robust prediction for the spectrum at
eV to be measured in the nearest future by
Auger detector.Comment: Revised version as published in Phys.Rev. D47 (2006) 043005 with a

Measurement of polarisation observables in photoproduction off the proton
The reaction is studied in the
photon energy range from threshold. Linearly polarised photon beams from
coherent bremsstrahlung enabled the first measurement of photon beam
asymmetries in this reaction up to MeV. In addition, the
recoil hyperon polarisation was determined through the asymmetry in the weak
decay up to MeV. The data are
compared to partial wave analyses, and the possible impact on the
interpretation of a recently observed cusp-like structure near the
thresholds is discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. References [8,9,10,11] which were not on the

Measurement of the Beam Asymmetry in the Forward Direction for pi0 Photoproduction
Photoproduction of neutral pions has been studied with the CBELSA/TAPS
detector for photon energies between 0.92 and 1.68~GeV at the electron
accelerator ELSA. The beam asymmetry~ has been extracted for of the ~meson and for . The new beam asymmetry data improve the world database for
photon energies above 1.5~GeV and, by covering the very forward region, extend
previously published data for the same reaction by our collaboration. The
angular dependence of shows overall good agreement with the SAID
parameterization.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, published in Phys. Rev. C, included LEPS data
and MAID 2007 predictions for comparison with our dat
Quasi-free photoproduction of eta-mesons of the neutron
Quasi-free photoproduction of eta-mesons off nucleons bound in the deuteron
has been measured with the CBELSA/TAPS detector for incident photon energies up
to 2.5 GeV at the Bonn ELSA accelerator. The eta-mesons have been detected in
coincidence with recoil protons and recoil neutrons, which allows a detailed
comparison of the quasi-free n(gamma, eta)n and p(gamma, eta)p reactions. The
excitation function for eta-production off the neutron shows a pronounced
bump-like structure at W=1.68 GeV (E_g ~ 1 GeV), which is absent for the
proton.Comment: accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let
Photoproduction of Neutral Pions off Protons
Photoproduction of neutral pions has been studied with the CBELSA/TAPS
detector in the reaction for photon energies between 0.85
and 2.50 GeV. The mesons are observed in their dominant neutral decay
mode: . For the first time, the differential cross
sections cover the very forward region, . A
partial-wave analysis of these data within the Bonn-Gatchina framework observes
the high-mass resonances (2190), (2080), and (2070).Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, minor modifications to PWA sectio
Measurement of gamma p --> K+ Lambda and gamma p --> K+ Sigma0 at photon energies up to 2.6 GeV
The reactions gamma p --> K+ Lambda and gamma p --> K+ Sigma0 were measured
in the energy range from threshold up to a photon energy of 2.6 GeV. The data
were taken with the SAPHIR detector at the electron stretcher facility, ELSA.
Results on cross sections and hyperon polarizations are presented as a function
of kaon production angle and photon energy. The total cross section for Lambda
production rises steeply with energy close to threshold, whereas the Sigma0
cross section rises slowly to a maximum at about E_gamma = 1.45 GeV. Cross
sections together with their angular decompositions into Legendre polynomials
suggest contributions from resonance production for both reactions. In general,
the induced polarization of Lambda has negative values in the kaon forward
direction and positive values in the backward direction. The magnitude varies
with energy. The polarization of Sigma0 follows a similar angular and energy
dependence as that of Lambda, but with opposite sign.Comment: 21 pages, 25 figures, submitted to Eur. Phys. J.
Photoproduction of meson pairs: First measurement of the polarization observable I^s
The polarization observable I^s, a feature exclusive to the acoplanar
kinematics of multi-meson final states produced via linearly polarized photons,
has been measured for the first time. Results for the reaction g p -> p pi0 eta
are presented for incoming photon energies between 970 MeV and 1650 MeV along
with the beam asymmetry I^c. The comparably large asymmetries demonstrate a
high sensitivity of I^s to the dynamics of the reaction. Fits using
Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis demonstrate that the new polarization
observables carry significant information on the contributing partial waves.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, v2 to appear in Phys. Lett.
K^0 pi^0 Sigma^+ and K^*0 Sigma^+ photoproduction off the proton
The exclusive reactions and , leading to the p 4 final state, have
been measured with a tagged photon beam for incident energies from threshold up
to 2.5 GeV. The experiment has been performed at the tagged photon facility of
the ELSA accelerator (Bonn). The Crystal Barrel and TAPS detectors were
combined to a photon detector system of almost 4 geometrical acceptance.
Differential and total cross sections are reported. At energies close to the
threshold, a flat angular distribution has been observed for the reaction
suggesting dominant s-channel production.
and higher lying hyperon states have been observed. An
enhancement in the forward direction in the angular distributions of the
reaction indicates a -channel exchange
contribution to the reaction mechanism. The experimental data are in reasonable
agreement with recent theoretical predictions.Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures, submitted to EPJ
Photoproduction of pi0 omega off protons for E(gamma) < 3 GeV
Differential and total cross-sections for photoproduction of gamma proton to
proton pi0 omega and gamma proton to Delta+ omega were determined from
measurements of the CB-ELSA experiment, performed at the electron accelerator
ELSA in Bonn. The measurements covered the photon energy range from the
production threshold up to 3GeV.Comment: 8 pages, 13 figure
