    Simulation of the effect of grain-boundaries in backside-passivated CIGS solar cells

    We carry out numerical 3D simulations of CIGS cells with back-side Al2O3 passivation and point contact openings in the presence of grain boundaries in the absorber. We consider CIGS cells with different absorber thickness, from 0.35 to 3 mu mathrm{m}. For thinner absorbers (1 mu mathrm{m} or less) we observe that GBs terminating on the Al2O3 are completely or almost completely passivated, while the effectiveness of the passivation decreases for thicker absorbers. GBs terminating on the point contact, instead, significantly lower the efficiency, regardless of absorber thickness. The presence of grain boundaries and the dimension of grains should therefore be taken into consideration when optimizing the back-side point contact array geometry

    Maxillary nerve block: A comparison between the greater palatine canal and high tuberosity approaches.

    Aim: Analgesia and anxiolysis during dental procedures are important for dental care and patient compliance. This study aims to compare two classical maxillary nerve block (MNB) techniques: the greater palatine canal (GPC) and the high tuberosity (HT) approaches, seldom used in routine dental practice. Methods: The study was conducted on 30 patients, scheduled for sinus lift surgery, who were randomly divided into 2 groups: the GPC approach to the MNB was used in 15 and the HT one in the other 15 patients. Anxiolysis was also used, depending on the results of the pre- preoperative assessment. Patients\u2019 sensations/pain during the procedure, details about anesthesia, and the dentist\u2019s considerations were all recorded. Data are expressed as mean \ub1SD. Statistical tests including ANOVA, \u3c72 following Yates correction and linear regression analysis were carried out. A < 0.05 p value was considered significant. Results: Study results showed that the anesthesia was effective and constant in the molar and premolar area. Additional infiltrations of local anesthetics were necessary for vestibular and palatal areas in the anterior oral cavity, respectively, in the GPC and HT groups. The two techniques were equally difficult to carry out in the dentist\u2019s opinion. There were no differences in pain or unpleasant sensations between the two groups, nor were any anesthesia-related complications reported. Conclusion: The GPC approach ensures effective anesthesia in the posterior maxillary region as far as both the dental pulp and the palatal/vestibular mucous membranes are concerned; the HT approach did not guarantee adequate anesthesia of the pterygopalatine branch of the maxillary nerve. These regional anesthesia techniques were characterized by a low incidence of intra and postoperative pain, no noteworthy complications, and high patient satisfaction

    Oral malodor in Special Care Patients: current knowledge

    Epidemiological studies report that about 50% of the population may have oral malodor with a strong social and psychological impact in their daily life. When intra-oral causes are excluded, referral to an appropriate medical specialist is paramount for management and treatment of extra-oral causes. The intra-oral causes of halitosis are highly common, and the dentist is the central clinician to diagnose and treat them. Pseudohalitosis or halitophobia may occur and an early identification of these conditions by the dentist is important in order to avoid unnecessary dental treatments for patients who need psychological or psychiatric therapy. The organoleptic technique is still considered the most reliable examination method to diagnose genuine halitosis. Special needs patients are more prone than others to have oral malodor because of concurrent systemic or metabolic diseases, and medications. The present report reviews halitosis, its implications, and the management in special care dentistry

    Choice drivers for quality-labelled food: A cross-cultural comparison on pdo cheese

    This study aims at examining the consumers’ preferences and drivers affecting the choice of quality-labelled food products, i.e., protected designation of origin (PDO) labelled cheese. We applied the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) to analyse the purchase of Parmigiano Reggiano PDO and Comté PDO hard cheeses in Italy and France, respectively. A cross-sectional sample of 808 consumers (400 French and 408 Italian) completed a questionnaire. Structural equation modelling (SEM) indicated perceived behavioural control (PBC) and attitude to be significant predictors of intention to purchase PDO-labelled cheese in France and Italy. Subjective and moral norms affected intention in France. Intention significantly influenced the hard cheese purchase behaviour. The results confirm that the TPB model predicted the self-reported measure of behaviour more than the observed one, measured with a discrete choice experiment, in both countries. The TPB interrelationships varied between countries, suggesting that food systems operators and public authorities should carefully target their intervention to stimulate the demand of PDO-labelled products

    Developing innovative crutch using IDeS (industrial design structure) methodology

    The present study wants to bring to light a new type of crutch designed for a chronic patient with perennial limited mobility, who must use this support every time a move is needed. The main purpose of the project consists in recommending a correct use of the crutch through technology, limiting the damage normally caused by a bad use of crutches and giving a support both for the patient and for the doctor. All of the features of the crutches were defined through relationship matrices and a benchmarking, which helped us for defining the requirements; other important features were defined, taking a look to the technological progresses applied to new, patented crutches. The result is a sensorized crutch, functional and oriented to meet the user's needs in order to prevent an incorrect use of the support avoiding the growth of other pains

    Insects as feed for farmed poultry: Are italian consumers ready to embrace this innovation?

    The inclusion of insects as a protein source in feed production is not only related to technical, economical, and normative restrictions but is also affected by consumer acceptance. In this study, we evaluated consumers’ attitudes, intention to purchase and eat, and willingness to pay for meat obtained from a farmed duck fed with insect-based meal or a live insect diet. We conducted a survey among a sample of 565 consumers to test the effects of information about the benefits of using insects as feed on consumers’ attitudes towards animal-based products fed with insects. Providing information on the sustainability and nutritional benefits of using insects as feed increased both attitude towards and intention to purchase and eat meat products made from animals fed with insects. In the treatment group, we found a significant reduction from 21.9 to 14.0% in those who wanted to be compensated for buying a duck fed with an insect-based meal and an increase in those willing to pay the same price—from 64.9 to 72.7%. The information treatment significantly increased the intention to eat such products, suggesting that increasing consumers’ knowledge might help in reducing the fears and misconceptions around the topic of using insects as a feed source

    A RAPD, AFLP and SSR linkage map, and QTL analysis in European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.)

    The genetic linkage map of European beech ( Fagus sylvatica L.) that we report here is the first to our knowledge. Based on a total of 312 markers (28 RAPDs, 274 AFLPs, 10 SSRs) scored in 143 individuals from a F(1) full-sib family. Two maps (one for each parent) were constructed according to a "two-way pseudo-testcross" mapping strategy. In the male map 119 markers could be clustered in 11 major groups (971 cM), while in the female map 132 markers were distributed in 12 major linkage groups (844 cM). In addition, four and one minor linkage groups (doublets and triplets) were obtained for the male and female map respectively. The two maps cover about 82% and 78% of the genome. Based on the position of 15 AFLP and 2 SSR loci segregating in both parents, seven homologous linkage groups could be identified. In the same pedigree we investigated the association with genetic markers of several quantitative traits: leaf area, leaf number and shape in 2 different years, specific leaf area, leaf carbon-isotope discrimination and tree height. A composite interval-mapping approach was used to estimate the number of QTLs, the amount of variation explained by each of them, and their position on the genetic linkage maps. Eight QTLs associated with leaf traits were found that explained between 15% and 35% of the trait variation, five on the female map and three on the male map

    On the temperature behavior of shunt-leakage currents in Cu(In,Ga)Se2 solar cells: The role of grain boundaries and rear Schottky contact

    By comparing simulated and measured dark current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of CIGS cells at different temperatures, we investigate the temperature behavior of the shunt leakage current, and find that it can be explained by large donor trap concentrations at grain boundaries (GBs), and by a Schottky barrier at the backside contact where the GBs meets the anode metallization. We studied the I-V characteristics in the temperature range 280 K - 160 K achieving good fits of the measured I-V curves, especially for reverse bias and low forward bias, where the shunt leakage current dominates. The most important parameters determining the shunt leakage current value and its temperature dependence are the peak energy and density of the GB donor distribution, which control the inversion of GBs and the pinning of Fermi level at the anode/GB contact
