Investigation of space shuttle launch vehicle external tank nose configuration effects (model 67-OTS) in the Rockwell International 7 by 7 foot trisonic wind tunnel (IA69)

Wind tunnel aerodynamic investigations were conducted on an 0.015-scale representation of the space shuttle launch configuration. The primary test objectives were to investigate shock wave formation and record the aerodynamic stability and control effects generated by a new external tank nose configuration (MCR 467) at a Mach number of 1.2. Schlieren photographs were taken at angles of attack of -4 deg, 0 deg, and 4 deg, beta = 0 deg with force and pressure data recorded over the alpha range of -4 deg equal to or less than alpha equal to or less than 4 deg at beta = + or - 4 deg. The launch configuration model, consisting of the VL70-00014OA/B Orbiter, the VL78-000041B ET, and the VL77-000036A SRBs, was sting mounted on a 2.5-inch Task type internal balance entering through the ET base region. Wing, body, and base pressure lines for all orifices were routed internally through the model to the sting support system. Parametric variation consisted only of altering the ET nose configuration

Flipped learning Hybrid learning and Inverted learning are all terms used to describe many classes seeking to use 21st century tools to teach to make the best use of class time. The teacher researcher studied the effectiveness of using video technology to extend interaction with the teacher in class and the impact it had on student learning by using a pre- and post-test in a Suburban High School foreign language (Spanish) class. The researcher uses a control and treatment group to compare traditional direct instruction teaching methods with Flipped learning In this mixed method study; the students were exposed to both forms of teaching methods and evaluated on how they perceived the advantages and disadvantages of each. Both the traditional and Flipped method proved to be just as effective. The researcher preformed the study again but switched the control and treatment groups with the same results. The great majority of students highly favored the \u27\u27Flipped model approach due to its flexibility and self-paced nature. The researcher finds that while over a short period of time following the Flipped model did not translate into improved test scores that students were much more motivated. Research with longer time intervals is merited

Here we Cumbria: modern universities and the industrial strategy [online blog]

A blog by University of Cumbria VC Prof Julie Mennell, commenting on the government’s industrial strategy green paper, which was shared by the Million Plus university lobby group and others. The paper, she says, demonstrates “how seriously the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State, Greg Clark MP are in seeking to address long-standing imbalances in regional growth” adding her hopes that the University of Cumbria will be a vital player in enacting the fine detail

Power, Individualism, and Collective Self Perception in the USA

    Get PDF
The thesis of this paper is that the key element in the shaping of the habitus of Americans has been their very long-term, virtually unbroken, experience of their country becoming more and more powerful vis-à-vis its neighbours. An increasing sense of their own powerfulness is related to the "individualism" that has so often been discussed as a key characteristic of the American "national character." The long-term process of habitus formation has had important consequences for the role of the USA in world affairs since the Second World War, and may continue to do so in a future marked for the first time by a long-term decline in American power

Community Property with Right of Survivorship

This Article examines the California rule that property cannot be both joint tenancy and community property. The author presents an overview of the various underlying policy considerations, as well as a synopsis of the legal approaches taken by other states. The author concludes that the California rule should be reversed and proposes the creation of a voluntary addition to the community ownership of the right of survivorship, as has been done in several other states

Heuristics for Solving Three Routing Problems: Close-Enough Traveling Salesman Problem, Close-Enough Vehicle Routing Problem, Sequence-Dependent Team Orienteering Problem

In this dissertation, we examine three important routing problems. In the second chapter we investigate the Close-Enough Traveling Salesman Problem (CETSP) in which a salesman must get within a specified radius of each node to visit it. The third chapter studies the multi-vehicle extension of the CETSP, the Close-Enough Vehicle Routing Problem (CEVRP). In the fourth chapter, we develop a post-processor to improve the accuracy of our heuristics for solving the CETSP and CEVRP. In the fifth chapter, we solve the Sequence-Dependent Team Orienteering Problem (SDTOP) in which the profit received for each node visited is dependent on the sequence in which all the nodes are visited. We summarize the dissertation in the final chapter. The CETSP, CEVRP, and SDTOP have application in aerial reconnaissance route planning. We formulate each problem as a mathematical program and apply heuristic and combinatorial optimization techniques to solve them. We present the results of extensive computational experiments that show that our methods produce high-quality solutions quickly
