    Analysis of the Dilemma and Strategies of Elderly Patients Access to Outpatient Services - Based on the Examples from three Grade A Tertiary Hospitals in Jiangxi Province

    Objective: To identify the dilemma of elderly patients' access to outpatient services, develop strategies to improve the environment and functions of the outpatient department, and encourage the elderly to access medical services independently. Methods: By observing and interviewing, this paper studies the environment, behavior, and experiences of elderly patients when accessing medical services, identifies and classifies the key issues, and provides corresponding suggestions. Results: Existing signs and voice prompt systems fail to guide elderly patients to access to medical services; Elderly patients have difficulty in finding places to transit and rest when accessing to outpatient services; Elderly patients have problems in using AI (artificial intelligence) technologies when they access to outpatient services; There are communication barriers between elderly patients and medical staffs. Conclusion: Optimizing the guiding signs and voice prompt systems according to the characteristics of elderly patients; Designing the areas of transition and rest reasonably; Enhancing the ability of elderly patients to use self-service equipment; Promoting the medical treatment process to the elderly in a humanized way

    A surgical system for automatic registration, stiffness mapping and dynamic image overlay

    In this paper we develop a surgical system using the da Vinci research kit (dVRK) that is capable of autonomously searching for tumors and dynamically displaying the tumor location using augmented reality. Such a system has the potential to quickly reveal the location and shape of tumors and visually overlay that information to reduce the cognitive overload of the surgeon. We believe that our approach is one of the first to incorporate state-of-the-art methods in registration, force sensing and tumor localization into a unified surgical system. First, the preoperative model is registered to the intra-operative scene using a Bingham distribution-based filtering approach. An active level set estimation is then used to find the location and the shape of the tumors. We use a recently developed miniature force sensor to perform the palpation. The estimated stiffness map is then dynamically overlaid onto the registered preoperative model of the organ. We demonstrate the efficacy of our system by performing experiments on phantom prostate models with embedded stiff inclusions.Comment: International Symposium on Medical Robotics (ISMR 2018

    A Map-matching Algorithm with Extraction of Multi-group Information for Low-frequency Data

    The growing use of probe vehicles generates a huge number of GNSS data. Limited by the satellite positioning technology, further improving the accuracy of map-matching is challenging work, especially for low-frequency trajectories. When matching a trajectory, the ego vehicle's spatial-temporal information of the present trip is the most useful with the least amount of data. In addition, there are a large amount of other data, e.g., other vehicles' state and past prediction results, but it is hard to extract useful information for matching maps and inferring paths. Most map-matching studies only used the ego vehicle's data and ignored other vehicles' data. Based on it, this paper designs a new map-matching method to make full use of "Big data". We first sort all data into four groups according to their spatial and temporal distance from the present matching probe which allows us to sort for their usefulness. Then we design three different methods to extract valuable information (scores) from them: a score for speed and bearing, a score for historical usage, and a score for traffic state using the spectral graph Markov neutral network. Finally, we use a modified top-K shortest-path method to search the candidate paths within an ellipse region and then use the fused score to infer the path (projected location). We test the proposed method against baseline algorithms using a real-world dataset in China. The results show that all scoring methods can enhance map-matching accuracy. Furthermore, our method outperforms the others, especially when GNSS probing frequency is less than 0.01 Hz.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, 4 table

    Robust identification of gene-environment interactions for prognosis using a quantile partial correlation approach

    Abstract(#br)Gene-environment (G-E) interactions have important implications for the etiology and progression of many complex diseases. Compared to continuous markers and categorical disease status, prognosis has been less investigated, with the additional challenges brought by the unique characteristics of survival outcomes. Most of the existing G-E interaction approaches for prognosis data share the limitation that they cannot accommodate long-tailed or contaminated outcomes. In this study, for prognosis data, we develop a robust G-E interaction identification approach using the censored quantile partial correlation (CQPCorr) technique. The proposed approach is built on the quantile regression technique (and hence has a solid statistical basis), uses weights to easily accommodate censoring, and adopts partial correlation to identify important interactions while properly controlling for the main genetic and environmental effects. In simulation, it outperforms multiple competitors with more accurate identification. In the analysis of TCGA data on lung cancer and melanoma, biologically sensible findings different from using the alternatives are made

    An ERP Assessment of Hemispheric Projections in Foveal and Extrafoveal Word Recognition

    The existence and function of unilateral hemispheric projections within foveal vision may substantially affect foveal word recognition. The purpose of this research was to reveal these projections and determine their functionality.Single words (and pseudowords) were presented to the left or right of fixation, entirely within either foveal or extrafoveal vision. To maximize the likelihood of unilateral projections for foveal displays, stimuli in foveal vision were presented away from the midline. The processing of stimuli in each location was assessed by combining behavioural measures (reaction times, accuracy) with on-line monitoring of hemispheric activity using event-related potentials recorded over each hemisphere, and carefully-controlled presentation procedures using an eye-tracker linked to a fixation-contingent display.Event-related potentials 100–150 ms and 150–200 ms after stimulus onset indicated that stimuli in extrafoveal and foveal locations were projected unilaterally to the hemisphere contralateral to the presentation hemifield with no concurrent projection to the ipsilateral hemisphere. These effects were similar for words and pseudowords, suggesting this early division occurred before word recognition. Indeed, event-related potentials revealed differences between words and pseudowords 300–350 ms after stimulus onset, for foveal and extrafoveal locations, indicating that word recognition had now occurred. However, these later event-related potentials also revealed that the hemispheric division observed previously was no longer present for foveal locations but remained for extrafoveal locations. These findings closely matched the behavioural finding that foveal locations produced similar performance each side of fixation but extrafoveal locations produced left-right asymmetries.These findings indicate that an initial division in unilateral hemispheric projections occurs in foveal vision away from the midline but is not apparent, or functional, when foveal word recognition actually occurs. In contrast, the division in unilateral hemispheric projections that occurs in extrafoveal locations is still apparent, and is functional, when extrafoveal word recognition takes place
