Assessment of the toll-like receptor 4 Asp299Gly, Thr399Ile and interleukin-8 -251 polymorphisms in the risk for the development of distal gastric cancer
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The intensity of the inflammation induced by <it>Helicobacter pylori </it>colonization is associated with the development of distal gastric cancer (GC). The host response to <it>H</it>. <it>pylori </it>has been related to genetic polymorphisms that influence both innate and adaptive immune responses.</p> <p>Our aim was to investigate whether the presence of the <it>TLR4 Asp299Gly</it>, <it>TLR4 Thr399Ile </it>and <it>IL-8-251 </it>A/T polymorphisms had any influence in the development of distal GC in a Mexican population.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We studied 337 patients that were divided in two groups: 78 patients with histologically confirmed distal GC and 259 non-cancer controls. The presence of <it>H. pylori </it>in the control population was defined by positive results of at least two of four diagnostic tests: serology, histology, rapid urease test and culture. Human DNA was purified and genotyped for <it>TLR4 Asp299Gly </it>polymorphism by pyrosequencing, for <it>TLR4 Thr399Ile </it>by PCR-RFLP and for <it>IL8-251 </it>by the amplification refractory mutation system (ARMS)-PCR.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The non-cancer control group was found to be in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium at the polymorphic loci studied (chi-square H-W = 0.58 for <it>IL8-251</it>, 0.42 for <it>TLR4 Asp299Gly </it>and 0.17 for <it>TLR4 Thr399Ile</it>). The frequencies of mutated alleles (homozygous plus heterozygous) were compared between cases and controls. We found no significant difference for <it>TLR4- Asp299Gly </it>[the 7.7% of distal GC patients and 7.7 % non-cancer controls (p = 0.82)] and for <it>TLR4 Thr399Ile </it>[the 1.3% of GC patients and the 5% of the control population (p = 0.2)]. In contrast, for <it>IL-8-251 </it>A/T, 80.77% of the GC patients and 66.4% in the control group age and gender matched had at least one copy of mutated allele (OR = 2.12, 95% CI = 1.1–4.2) (p = 0.023).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This study showed that the <it>IL8-251*A </it>allele could be related to the development of distal gastric cancer in this Mexican population.</p
Stellar Population gradients in galaxy discs from the CALIFA survey
While studies of gas-phase metallicity gradients in disc galaxies are common,
very little has been done in the acquisition of stellar abundance gradients in
the same regions. We present here a comparative study of the stellar
metallicity and age distributions in a sample of 62 nearly face-on, spiral
galaxies with and without bars, using data from the CALIFA survey. We measure
the slopes of the gradients and study their relation with other properties of
the galaxies. We find that the mean stellar age and metallicity gradients in
the disc are shallow and negative. Furthermore, when normalized to the
effective radius of the disc, the slope of the stellar population gradients
does not correlate with the mass or with the morphological type of the
galaxies. Contrary to this, the values of both age and metallicity at 2.5
scale-lengths correlate with the central velocity dispersion in a similar
manner to the central values of the bulges, although bulges show, on average,
older ages and higher metallicities than the discs. One of the goals of the
present paper is to test the theoretical prediction that non-linear coupling
between the bar and the spiral arms is an efficient mechanism for producing
radial migrations across significant distances within discs. The process of
radial migration should flatten the stellar metallicity gradient with time and,
therefore, we would expect flatter stellar metallicity gradients in barred
galaxies. However, we do not find any difference in the metallicity or age
gradients in galaxies with without bars. We discuss possible scenarios that can
lead to this absence of difference.Comment: 24 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in A&
Imprints of galaxy evolution on H ii regions Memory of the past uncovered by the CALIFA survey
H ii regions in galaxies are the sites of star formation and thus particular
places to understand the build-up of stellar mass in the universe. The line
ratios of this ionized gas are frequently used to characterize the ionization
conditions. We use the Hii regions catalogue from the CALIFA survey (~5000 H ii
regions), to explore their distribution across the classical [OIII]/Hbeta vs.
[NII]/Halpha diagnostic diagram, and how it depends on the oxygen abundance,
ionization parameter, electron density, and dust attenuation. We compared the
line ratios with predictions from photoionization models. Finally, we explore
the dependences on the properties of the host galaxies, the location within
those galaxies and the properties of the underlying stellar population. We
found that the location within the BPT diagrams is not totally predicted by
photoionization models. Indeed, it depends on the properties of the host
galaxies, their galactocentric distances and the properties of the underlying
stellar population. These results indicate that although H ii regions are short
lived events, they are affected by the total underlying stellar population. One
may say that H ii regions keep a memory of the stellar evolution and chemical
enrichment that have left an imprint on the both the ionizing stellar
population and the ionized gasComment: 18 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publishing in A&
Identification and characterization of aspartyl-tRNA synthetase inhibitors against Mycobacterium tuberculosis by an integrated whole-cell target-based approach
TOROS optical follow-up of the advanced LIGO–VIRGO O2 second observational campaign
We present themethods and results of the optical follow-up, conducted by the Transient Optical Robotic Observatory of the South Collaboration, of gravitational wave events detected during the Advanced LIGO–Virgo second observing run (2016 November–2017 August). Given the limited field of view (∼100 arcmin) of our observational instrumentation, we targeted galaxies within the area of high localization probability that were observable from our sites. We analysed the observations using difference imaging, followed by a random forest algorithm to discriminate between real and spurious transients. Our observations were conducted using telescopes at Estacion Astrofısica de Bosque Alegre, Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, the Dr. Cristina V. Torres Memorial Astronomical Observatory, and an observing station in Salta, Argentina
Infrared spectroscopy of NGC 1068: Probing the obscured ionizing AGN continuum
The ISO-SWS 2.5-45 um infrared spectroscopic observations of the nucleus of
the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 (see companion paper) are combined with a
compilation of UV to IR narrow emission line data to determine the spectral
energy distribution (SED) of the obscured extreme-UV continuum that
photoionizes the narrow line emitting gas in the active galactic nucleus. We
search a large grid of gas cloud models and SEDs for the combination that best
reproduces the observed line fluxes and NLR geometry. Our best fit model
reproduces the observed line fluxes to better than a factor of 2 on average and
is in general agreement with the observed NLR geometry. It has two gas
components that are consistent with a clumpy distribution of dense outflowing
gas in the center and a more extended distribution of less dense and more
clumpy gas farther out that has no net outflow. The best fit SED has a deep
trough at ~4 Ryd, which is consistent with an intrinsic Big Blue Bump that is
partially absorbed by ~6x10^19 cm^-2 of neutral hydrogen interior to the NLR.Comment: 15 pp, 4 figures, ApJ accepte
Water jet erosion performance of carbon fiber and glass fiber reinforced polymers
Complex engineering challenges are revealed in the wind industry; one of them is erosion at the leading edge of wind turbine blades. Water jet erosive wear tests on carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and glass-fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) were performed in order to determine their resistance at the conditions tested. Vacuum Infusion Process (VIP) was used to obtain the composite materials. Eight layers of bidirectional carbon fabric (0/90°) and nine glass layers of bidirectional glass cloth were used to manufacture the plates. A water injection platform was utilized. The liquid was projected with a pressure of 150 bar on the surface of the specimens through a nozzle. The samples were located at 65 mm from the nozzle at an impact angle of 75°, with an exposure time of 10, 20 and 30 min. SEM and optical microscopy were used to observe the damage on surfaces. A 3D optical profilometer helped to determine the roughness and see the scar profiles. The results showed that the volume loss for glass fiber and carbon fiber were 10 and 19 mm3, respectively. This means that the resistance to water jet erosion in uncoated glass fiber was approximately two times lower than uncoated carbon fiber
Identification and estimation of the area planted with irrigated rice based on the visual interpretation of LANDSAT MSS data
The objective was to test the feasibility of the application of MSS-LANDSAT data to irrigated rice crop identification and area evaluation, within four rice growing regions of the Rio Grande do Sul state, in order to extend the methodology for the whole state. The applied methodology was visual interpretation of the following LANDSAT products: channels 5 and 7 black and white imageries and color infrared composite imageries all at the scale of 1:250.000. For crop identification and evaluation, the multispectral criterion and the seasonal variation were utilized. Based on the results it was possible to conclude that: (1) the satellite data were efficient for crop area identification and evaluation; (2) the utilization of the multispectral criterion, allied to the seasonal variation of the rice crop areas from the other crops and, (3) the large cloud cover percentage found in the satellite data made it impossible to realize a rice crop spectral monitoring and, therefore, to define the best dates for such data acquisition for rice crop assessment
