Asymptotically optimum estimation of a probability in inverse binomial sampling under general loss functions

    Get PDF
The optimum quality that can be asymptotically achieved in the estimation of a probability p using inverse binomial sampling is addressed. A general definition of quality is used in terms of the risk associated with a loss function that satisfies certain assumptions. It is shown that the limit superior of the risk for p asymptotically small has a minimum over all (possibly randomized) estimators. This minimum is achieved by certain non-randomized estimators. The model includes commonly used quality criteria as particular cases. Applications to the non-asymptotic regime are discussed considering specific loss functions, for which minimax estimators are derived.Comment: Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference. Improved Sequential Stopping Rule for Monte Carlo Simulation

This paper presents an improved result on the negative-binomial Monte Carlo technique analyzed in a previous paper for the estimation of an unknown probability p. Specifically, the confidence level associated to a relative interval [p/\mu_2, p\mu_1], with \mu_1, \mu_2 > 1, is proved to exceed its asymptotic value for a broader range of intervals than that given in the referred paper, and for any value of p. This extends the applicability of the estimator, relaxing the conditions that guarantee a given confidence level.Comment: 2 figures. Paper accepted in IEEE Transactions on Communication

Estimation of a probability in inverse binomial sampling under normalized linear-linear and inverse-linear loss

    Get PDF
Sequential estimation of the success probability pp in inverse binomial sampling is considered in this paper. For any estimator p^\hat p, its quality is measured by the risk associated with normalized loss functions of linear-linear or inverse-linear form. These functions are possibly asymmetric, with arbitrary slope parameters aa and bb for p^p\hat pp respectively. Interest in these functions is motivated by their significance and potential uses, which are briefly discussed. Estimators are given for which the risk has an asymptotic value as pp tends to 00, and which guarantee that, for any pp in (0,1)(0,1), the risk is lower than its asymptotic value. This allows selecting the required number of successes, rr, to meet a prescribed quality irrespective of the unknown pp. In addition, the proposed estimators are shown to be approximately minimax when a/ba/b does not deviate too much from 11, and asymptotically minimax as rr tends to infinity when a=ba=b.Comment: 4 figure

    Consciousness - a dialogical presentation

    Get PDF
Consciousness is, probably, the most common and the most mysterious experience in human life. It encompasses a stream of mental activities that include knowledge and recognition, emotions and feelings, organic dispositions, and linguistic acts, as well as altered states such as those provoked by drugs and pathologies, and mystical moments. The philosophy of mind is habitually reprimanded for neglecting to characterize exactly what consciousness is. In this regard there has been little change over the previous decades because consciousness has a wide assortment of meanings according to authors and disciplines. Consciousness is analysed in scientific perspectives such as neurosciences, psychology, linguistics, physics, and cybernetics. Each science highlights special features of consciousness’ rooting in the subject, according to specific interpersonal contexts, biological developments and always as a mirror of the brain's complexity. A short state of the art of consciousness’ studies is useful if it searches for constant issues beyond the variety of explorations of conscious experience. Beyond the psychology’s self, the psychoanalysis’ ego and the mental maps of neurosciences, we observe trends in the philosophy of mind that search for a dialogical ground; what relates us to the other as we say ‘I’, ‘Thou’ and ‘We’, is an essential aspect of human experience and a permanent challenge.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Illustrating multipath propagation by means of sound waves

    Get PDF
A method is presented that uses sound waves to illustrate multipath propagation concepts. This is based on the existing analogy between radio and sound waves, and has the advantage that the required equipment is easily available. Different measurement techniques are introduced to respectively examine time dispersion, time variation, and both aspects of the multipath channel simultaneously. The proposed techniques are justified, example results are given, and the specific features that are illustrated by each type of measurement are discussed. Suggestions are given regarding application in courses on wireless communications

ABSTRACT The purpose of this Project is to carry out a study about the management of SAMCA´s coalmine complex in Ariño, as well as gathering a range of initiatives to help optimizing the present system. Additionally, the study sets out to analyze the possible problems arising from the closing of “Sierra de Arcos” underground mine, contributor of one of the main sources of water into the system. Based on the analysis, a series of possible options are presented to reach the ideal utilization of the superficial and underground water. These proposals aim to ensure an optimal water balance sheet between the water contributions and the water consumptions. The results obtained from this exhaustive analysis are used to reach a conclusion for the project by presenting what are considered the best options from both, a technical and an economic point of view

Scientific literacy means what public should know about science in order to participate in the society of knowledge. Our goal here is to demonstrate how Bernard Lonergan’s theory of constructivist epistemological contributes to scientific literacy as it analyzes scientific knowledge in an innovative and rigorous way without yielding to common sens,. Lonergan's theses are contrasted with the neo-positivist vision of the 50s and contextualized as anticipatory of Kuhn’s and Lakatos’s theoretical issues. In a world increasingly dependent on technology, Lonergan left us a powerful lever for the exercise of citizenship and humanism

Time-frequency characterization of a sound propagation channel as an educational tool

This paper discusses the use of sound waves to illustrate multipath radio propagation concepts. Specifically, a procedure is presented to measure the time-varying frequency response of the channel. This helps demonstrate how a propagation channel can be characterized in time and frequency, and provides visualizations of the concepts of coherence time and coherence bandwidth. The measurements are very simple to carry out, and the required equipment is easily available. The proposed method can be useful for wireless or mobile communication courses
