Metaphors of modernity of photographs of argentines architectural magazines, 1929-1955

El presente artículo analiza la fotografía de arquitectura en las páginas de la revista argentina Nuestra Arquitectura en sus ediciones hasta 1955. Se sostiene aquí que el discurso de estas imágenes –que considera a la fotografía como texto-, reunió las condiciones suficientes para consolidar la apertura del Movimiento Moderno en el contexto local. El estudio se basa en los dispositivos de comunicación que facilitaron la construcción y difusión de los nuevos códigos que aten - dieron, como criterio paradigmático la percepción visual, la estética del espacio y la masa volumétrica, ponderando la forma por sobre la función de habitabilidad a la que se debe todo objeto arquitectónico e instalaron la formulación de su imaginario de modernidad.This article focuses on the architecture photography analyzed in the pages of the Argentinean magazine Nuestra Arqui - tectura (Our Architecture) from its beginnings until 1955. The author maintains here that the discourse of these images – which regard photography as text – gathered together sufficient conditions so as to consolidate the beginning of the Modern Movement in the local context. This study is based on the communication mechanisms that facilitated the cons - truction and spread of new codes, whose paradigmatic criteria took into account visual perception, space aesthetics and volume. Colección de colecciones: la hemeroteca de arquitectura latinoamericana del CEDODAL

La Real Academia Española de la Lengua define una colección como el conjunto ordenado de cosas de una misma clase que es reunido por su especial interés o valor. En ese sentido, este texto aborda algunos aspectos de la colección de revistas de arquitectura del continente existentes en el Centro de Documentación de Arquitectura Latinoamericana Cedodal y que gracias a la calidad y los cerca de quince mil ejemplares que conserva, lo sitúan como el más completo en su género. Su análisis relata el origen de colecciones directamente relacionado con su promotor, el arquitecto Ramón Gutiérrez; luego se analizan aspectos particulares que enriquecen las características del conjunto atendiendo su procedencia, antigüedad y cambios en sus denominaciones, junto con comentarios sobre algunas revistas que jalonaron las vanguardias. El artículo concluye con la situación de las revistas frente a las nuevas tecnologías, el establecimiento de redes y la valoración de su importancia como canal fundamental de comunicación de la arquitectura.The Real Academia Española defines the word collection as the arranged set of things of the same kind grouped by its special interest or value. In that sense, this text approaches some aspects of the collection of architecture journals from the continent contained in the Documentation Center of Latin American Architecture Cedodal which because of their quality and the nearly fifteen thousand copies it keeps place this Center as one of the most complete in its category. Its analysis describes the origin of collections directly related to its promoter, the architect Ramon Gutierrez to later analyze those particular aspects that enrich the characteristics of the group considering its precedence, antiquity, and changes in denominations, together with comments on some journals that marked the avant-garde. This article concludes with the journals situation facing the new technologies, the networks implementation and the value of their importance as a fundamental communication channel for architecture.Fil: Mendez, Patricia Susana. El capítulo reune brevemente la evolución urbana del barrio de Barracas desde la fundación de la ciudad de Buenos Aires hasta el siglo XX. First congress from the Association of Architects of Chile, Concepcion, 1950: Discipline, profession and modernity

En ocasión del cuarto centenario de la fundación de la ciudad de Concepción, en 1950, la capital penquista se tornó un caleidoscopio cultural. Entre la multiplicidad de acontecimientos ocurridos entonces tuvo lugar el “Primer Congreso y Exposición Nacional de Arquitectura”. Si bien la historiografía de la arquitectura nacional prestó escasa atención a esta primera reunión convocada por el Colegio de Arquitectos, a partir del hallazgo de sus noticias en medios periodísticos penquistas, este artículo informa de su desarrollo y aventura sus alcances. El texto presentado1 es complementario a una investigación mayor, focalizada en los medios de comunicación de arquitectura editados en Chile; por ello, da cuenta de los hechos a través de una apretada crónica del encuentro y ofrece resultados preliminares en cuanto a una revisión en la trayectoria personal e institucional de los protagonistas pues, inmediatamente después de este evento, sus nombres se involucraron en la vanguardia arquitectónica como consecuencia del equilibrado ejercicio entre disciplina, profesión y modernidad.Because of the IV Centenary of the Concepcion city foundation in 1950, this capital city turned into a cultural kaleidoscope. Among the multiplicity of events celebrated, the “First Congress and National Architecture Exhibition” took place. Although, national architecture historiography paid little attention to this first gathering convened by the Association of Architects, given the discovery of its news in the Concepcion press, this article informs about its development and scope. The text presented is complimentary to a major investigation focused on the mass media covering architecture edited in Chile; therefore, it reveals the facts through a tight chronic about the gathering and offers preliminary results regarding a review about the personal and institutional career of the attendees to this congress because, immediately after this event their names got involved in the architectonic avant-garde as a consequence of the balanced exercise among discipline, profession and modernityFil: Mendez, Patricia Susana. Persistent Conventions in 20th Century Architecture Photography

Fotografía y arquitectura guardan entre sí una relación unívoca y constante. El invento y la tecnología de la primera resultaron ser mecanismos óptimos para la divulgación de la segunda, transformándola en modelo ideal frente al gatillo de una cámara. Sin embargo, esas evidencias, plasmadas en papel, revelan también la instalación de un campo disciplinar que amarró los cánones visuales y estéticos de ambas disciplinas. Este texto se propone entonces indagar este binomio a partir de las invariantes que circunscribieron la fotografía de arquitectura del siglo XX. La metodología aplicada recurrió a textos que profundizan la cultura visual, en conjunto con literatura teórica sobre fotografía y ejemplos clásicos de arquitectura. En el intento de analizar, parcialmente, la comunicación visual de la arquitectura ―desde la mirada contemporánea, sobrevalorada por el consumismo de imágenes― se concluye que es evidente que el fotógrafo oficia de traductor de las convenciones arquitectónicas mientras el arquitecto lo hace como organizador de sus imágenes. Technological innovation, a mirror of the 60s. The traces of the IETcc were read in the Chilean Technique and Creation

Este texto surge como uno de los resultados de una investigación mayor, dedicada a las revistas de arquitectura chilenas y argentinas editadas durante la segunda mitad del siglo XX. En ese amplio abanico figura Técnica y Creación, una revista editada entre agosto de 1960 y diciembre de 1967 desde el Instituto de Edificación Experimental (IEE), dependiente de la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad de Chile. Su análisis se presenta desde las circunstancias académicas y sociales que la misma Universidad promovió poco antes de la década de 1960 y pondera la importancia que adquirió la prefabricación y la innovación tecnológica en Chile en ese entonces. Una lectura minuciosa de las páginas de Técnica y Creación permite suponer que, tanto esta edición como el espíritu expresado por el Instituto que la promovía y su Director, surgieron como consecuencia de un par español contemporáneo, el Instituto Eduardo Torroja de la Construcción y el Cemento (IETcc) y su revista, Informes de la Construcción.Fil: Mendez, Patricia Susana. For other heritage narratives: traces of the political action of the MEMCH Provincial Committee of Concepción (1935-1953)

A partir de un estudio de caso, este texto analiza una serie de espacios urbanos que, durante la primera mitad del siglo XX, fueron utilizados por el Comité Provincial del Movimiento Pro Emancipación de las Mujeres de Chile (MEMcH) en la ciudad de Concepción. De esta manera, se identificaron sus huellas en tanto prácticas de acción política urbana en esa ciudad y cuyos resultados surgen de la triangulación de diversas fuentes literarias, documentales, archivísticas, además de entrevistas. El estudio realizado de estos ámbitos es mucho más amplio y supera lo antes dicho; sin embargo, para propósitos de este texto se decidieron exponer aquellos que contaban con una mayor información. Desde esta perspectiva y así como respecto de los diversos comités instalados por el MEMcH en el Biobío, la acción y presencia de las memchistas locales no ha sido suficientemente difundida ni trabajada, por lo cual la hipótesis que se establece es que este ejemplo puede ser utilizado para visualizar cómo operan determinadas narrativas patrimoniales y cómo, para la construcción de la memoria urbana, aportan referencias que dan cuenta de su presencia, de sus acciones y contribuciones. Esto las constituiría no sólo como herencia y patrimonio no visible dentro de las ciudades si no también como forma de disputa frente a las memorias urbanas, evidenciando la influencia del sistema sexo-género en ello.Based on a case study, this text analyzes a series of urban spaces that, during the first half of the twentieth century, were used by the Provincial Committee of the Movement for the Emancipation of Women of Chile (MEMCH) in the city of Concepción. In this way, their traces were identified as practices of urban political action in that city. The findings were derived from the triangulation of various literary, documentary and archival sources, as also interviews. The study of these areas is much broader and goes beyond the above mentioned; however, for the purposes of this text, it was decided to expose those that had more information. From this perspective, as also in consideration to the various committees installed by MEMCH in Biobío, the action and presence of local memchistas has not been sufficiently disseminated or worked. Thus, the hypothesis that guides this article is that this example can be used to visualize how certain patrimonial narratives operate and how, for the construction of urban memory, they provide references that account for their presence, their actions and contributions. This allows to conceive them not only as heritage and non-visible patrimony within the cities, but also as a form of dispute against urban memories, showing at the same time the influence of the sex-gender system in it.Fil: Morales Ortiz, María Fernanda. Dendritic Cells Are Responsible for the Capacity of CpG Oligodeoxynucleotides to Act as an Adjuvant for Protective Vaccine Immunity Against Leishmania major in Mice

Vaccination with leishmanial Ag and CpG oligodeoxynucleotides (ODN) confers sustained cellular immunity and protection to infectious challenge up to 6 mo after immunization. To define the cellular mechanism by which CpG ODN mediate their adjuvant effects in vivo, the functional capacity of distinct dendritic cell (DC) subsets was assessed in the lymph nodes (LNs) of BALB/c mice, 36 h after immunization with the leishmanial antigen (LACK) and CpG ODN. After this immunization, there was a striking decrease in the frequency of the CD11c+B220+ plasmacytoid DCs with a proportionate increase in CD11c+CD8−B220− cells. CD11c+CD8+B220− cells were the most potent producers of interleukin (IL)-12 p70 and interferon (IFN)-γ, while plasmacytoid DCs were the only subset capable of secreting IFN-α. In terms of antigen presenting capacity, plasmacytoid DCs were far less efficient compared with the other DC subsets. To certify that DCs were responsible for effective vaccination, we isolated CD11c+ and CD11c− cells 36 h after immunization and used such cells to elicit protective immunity after adoptive transfer in naive, Leishmania major susceptible BALB/c mice. CD11c+ cells but not 10-fold higher numbers of CD11c− cells from such immunized mice mediated protection. Therefore, the combination of LACK antigen and CpG ODN adjuvant leads to the presence of CD11c+ DCs in the draining LN that are capable of vaccinating naive mice in the absence of further antigen or adjuvant

A cancer-associated point mutation disables the steric gate of human PrimPol

PrimPol is a human primase/polymerase specialized in re-starting stalled forks by repriming beyond lesions such as pyrimidine dimers, and replication-perturbing structures including G-quadruplexes and R-loops. Unlike most conventional primases, PrimPol proficiently discriminates against ribonucleotides (NTPs), being able to start synthesis using deoxynucleotides (dNTPs), yet the structural basis and physiological implications for this discrimination are not understood. In silico analyses based on the three-dimensional structure of human PrimPol and related enzymes enabled us to predict a single residue, Tyr100, as the main effector of sugar discrimination in human PrimPol and a change of Tyr100 to histidine to boost the efficiency of NTP incorporation. We show here that the Y100H mutation profoundly stimulates NTP incorporation by human PrimPol, with an efficiency similar to that for dNTP incorporation during both primase and polymerase reactions in vitro. As expected from the higher cellular concentration of NTPs relative to dNTPs, Y100H expression in mouse embryonic fibroblasts and U2OS osteosarcoma cells caused enhanced resistance to hydroxyurea, which decreases the dNTP pool levels in S-phase. Remarkably, the Y100H PrimPol mutation has been identified in cancer, suggesting that this mutation could be selected to promote survival at early stages of tumorigenesis, which is characterized by depleted dNTP pools.We are thankful to Professor Ian J. México está inmerso en una acelerada transición demográfica, es el séptimo lugar entre los países con envejecimiento acelerado en Latinoamérica, con 9.7% de adultos mayores de 60 años (CONAPO, 2013).
