    Cations extraction of sandy-clay soils from Cavado valley, Portugal, using sodium salts solutions

    Cases of contamination by metals in the water wells of the Cavado Valley in north-west Portugal can be attributed to the heavy leaching of clay soils due to an excess of nitrogen resulting from the intensive use of fertilisers in agricultural areas. This work focuses on the natural weathering characteristics of soils, particularly the clay material, through the study of samples collected near the River Cavado. Samples taken from various sites, after physico-chemical characterisation, were subjected to clay dissolution tests, using sodium salts of different ionic forces, to detect the relationship between certain physico-chemical parameters of water, such as pH, nitrate, chloride and sulphate content, in the dissolution of clay and the subsequent extraction of such cations as Al, Fe and K. In acidic sandy clay soils, the mineralogical composition of which was characterised by a predominance of quartz, micas, kaolinite and K-feldspars, decreases of the clay material/water pH ratio increases dissolution of the micaceous and K-feldspars phases. The presence of nitrates in the aqueous solution apparently advanced the extraction of all three cations Al, Fe and K. The specific surface area of the clay material showed a significant correlation with the main kinetic parameters of cation extraction.Têm ocorrido casos de contaminações de águas de poços, por metais, no vale do Rio Cávado, região noroeste de Portugal. A princípio, poderiam ser explicáveis pela elevada lixiviação dos solos arenoargilosos da região, quando da prática de adubações intensivas de nitrogênio em áreas agrícolas. Assim, estudaram-se as características do intemperismo natural dos solos, particularmente da fração argila, característica da margem norte do rio Cávado. Coletaram-se amostras de vários locais, que foram submetidas, após caracterização físico-química, a ensaios de dissolução a partir de soluções de sais de sódio com diferentes forças iônicas. O objetivo foi observar as relações de determinados parâmetros físico-químicos da água, tais como: pH, nitratos, cloretos e sulfatos na dissolução das argilas e a conseqüente extração de espécies químicas tais como Al, K e Fe. Para solos areno-argilosos, ácidos, cuja composição mineralógica se caracteriza por um predomínio de quartzo, micas, caulinita e feldspato-K, o abaixamento do pH da suspensão solo/água promove a solubilização das fases micáceas e feldspáticas. A presença do nitrato nas soluções aquosas promoveu aparentemente a extração de todos os três cátions: Al, K e Fe.     Concepts in context: processing mental state concepts with internal or external focus involves different neural systems

    According to embodied cognition theories, concepts are contextually situated and grounded in neural systems that produce experiential states. This view predicts that processing mental state concepts recruits neural regions associated with different aspects of experience depending on the context in which people understand a concept. This neuroimaging study tested this prediction using a set of sentences that described emotional (e.g., fear, joy) and nonemotional (e.g., thinking, hunger) mental states with internal focus (i.e., focusing on bodily sensations and introspection) or external focus (i.e., focusing on expression and action). Consistent with our predictions, data suggested that the inferior frontal gyrus, a region associated with action representation, was engaged more by external than internal sentences. By contrast, the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, a region associated with the generation of internal states, was engaged more by internal emotion sentences than external sentence categories. Similar patterns emerged when we examined the relationship between neural activity and independent ratings of sentence focus. Furthermore, ratings of emotion were associated with activation in the medial prefrontal cortex, whereas ratings of activity were associated with activation in the inferior frontal gyrus. These results suggest that mental state concepts are represented in a dynamic way, using context-relevant interoceptive and sensorimotor resources

    Standardizing the influenza neuraminidase inhibition assay among United States public health laboratories conducting virological surveillance

    Background: Monitoring influenza virus susceptibility to neuraminidase (NA) inhibitors (NAIs) is vital for detecting drug-resistant variants, and is primarily assessed using NA inhibition (NI) assays, supplemented by NA sequence analysis. However, differences in NI testing methodologies between surveillance laboratories results in variability of 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) values, which impacts data sharing, reporting and interpretation. In 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in collaboration with the Association for Public Health Laboratories (APHL) spearheaded efforts to standardize fluorescence-based NI assay testing in the United States (U.S.), with the goal of achieving consistency of IC50 data. Methods: For the standardization process, three participating state public health laboratories (PHLs), designated as National Surveillance Reference Centers for Influenza (NSRC-Is), assessed the NAI susceptibility of the 2011-12 CDC reference virus panel using stepwise procedures, with support from the CDC reference laboratory. Next, the NSRC-Is assessed the NAI susceptibility of season 2011-12 U.S. influenza surveillance isolates (n = 940), with a large subset (n = 742) tested in parallel by CDC. Subsequently, U.S. influenza surveillance isolates (n = 9629) circulating during the next three influenza seasons (2012-15), were independently tested by the three NSRC-Is (n = 7331) and CDC (n = 2298). Results: The NI assay IC50s generated by respective NSRC-Is using viruses and drugs prepared by CDC were similar to those obtained with viruses and drugs prepared in-house, and were uniform between laboratories. IC50s for U.S. surveillance isolates tested during four consecutive influenza seasons (2011-15) were consistent from season to season, within and between laboratories. Conclusion: These results show that the NI assay is robust enough to be standardized, marking the first time IC50 data have been normalized across multiple laboratories, and used for U.S. national NAI susceptibility surveillance

    The aCORN experiment uses a novel asymmetry method to measure the electron-antineutrino correlation (a-coefficient) in free neutron decay that does not require precision proton spectroscopy. aCORN completed two physics runs at the NIST Center for Neutron Research. The first run on the NG-6 beam line obtained the result a = 0.1090 +/- 0.0030 (stat) +/- 0.0028 (sys), the most precise to date. The second run on the new NG-C high flux beam line promises an improvement in precision to ¡ 2%. In addition we show that an improved measurement of the neutrino asymmetry (B-coefficient) can be made using the aCORN apparatus on a highly polarized neutron beam

    A systematic review and meta-analysis of the role of positron emission tomography in the follow up of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma following radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy

    Objectives: This review examines the effectiveness of positron emission tomography (PET) in the detection of recurrent or persistent head and neck squamous cell carcinoma after radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy. Design: A systematic review and meta-analysis of trials of PET for detecting residual/recurrent head and neck squamous cell carcinoma treated by radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy. Trials were quality assessed using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies tool for assessing diagnostic accuracy studies. Quantitative data were extracted and a bivariate random effects model used to calculate pooled sensitivity and specificity. Setting: Tertiary referral head and neck centre. Participants: Prospective and retrospective studies, excluding reviews, which included patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma who had fluorodeoxyglucose PET in the post-treatment phase following primary treatment by radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy. Main outcomes measures: Quality assessment, sensitivity, specificity, false positive rates, false negative rates, positive and negative predictive values. Results: Twenty-seven of 1871 identified studies were eligible for inclusion. The pooled sensitivity and specificity of PET for detecting residual or recurrent head and neck squamous cell carcinoma were 94% [95% confidence interval (CI), 87-97%] and 82% (95% CI, 76-86%) respectively. Positive and negative predictive values were 75% (95% CI, 68-82%), and 95% (95% CI, 92-97%) respectively. Sensitivity was greater for scans performed 10 weeks or more after treatment. Conclusions: Positron emission tomography is highly accurate in this role. However it is less sensitive early after treatment and has poor anatomical detail. PET may reduce the requirement for check endoscopies and planned neck dissections. A protocol for its use in post-treatment surveillance is proposed
