    Twitter Strategies for Web-Based Surveying : Descriptive Analysis From the International Concussion Study

    BACKGROUND: Social media provides researchers with an efficient means to reach and engage with a large and diverse audience. Twitter allows for the virtual social interaction among a network of users that enables researchers to recruit and administer surveys using snowball sampling. Although using Twitter to administer surveys for research is not new, strategies to improve response rates are yet to be reported. OBJECTIVE: To compare the potential and actual reach of 2 Twitter accounts that administered a Web-based concussion survey to rugby players and trainers using 2 distinct Twitter-targeting strategies. Furthermore, the study sought to determine the likelihood of receiving a retweet based on the time of the day and day of the week of posting. METHODS: A survey based on previous concussion research was exported to a Web-based survey website Survey Monkey. The survey comprised 2 questionnaires, one for players, and one for those involved in the game (eg, coaches and athletic trainers). The Web-based survey was administered using 2 existing Twitter accounts, with each account executing a distinct targeting strategy. A list of potential Twitter accounts to target was drawn up, together with a list of predesigned tweets. The list of accounts to target was divided into 'High-Profile' and 'Low-Profile', based on each accounts' position to attract publicity with a high social interaction potential. The potential reach (number of followers of the targeted account), and actual reach (number of retweets received by each post) between the 2 strategies were compared. The number of retweets received by each account was further analyzed to understand when the most likely time of day, and day of the week, a retweet would be received. RESULTS: The number of retweets received by a Twitter account decreased by 72% when using the 'high-profile strategy' compared with the 'low-profile strategy' (incidence rate ratio (IRR); 0.28, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.21-0.37, P.001) and 6 PM to 11:59 PM (IRR 1.48, 95% CI 1.05-2.09, P>.05) were significantly increased relative to 6 AM to 11:59 AM. However, posting tweets during the hours of 12 PM to 5:59 PM, decreased the IRR for retweets by 40% (IRR 0.60, 95% CI 0.46-0.79, P<.001) compared with 6 AM to 11:59 AM. Posting on a Monday (IRR 3.57, 95% CI 2.50-5.09, P<.001) or Wednesday (IRR 1.50, 95% CI 1.11-1.11, P<.01) significantly increased the IRR compared with posting on a Thursday. CONCLUSIONS: Surveys are a useful tool to measure the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of a given population. Strategies to improve Twitter engagement include targeting low-profile accounts, posting tweets in the morning (12 AM-11:59 AM) or late evenings (6 PM-11:59 PM), and posting on Mondays and Wednesdays

    Cardiovascular risk assessments at occupational health services: employee experiences

    Background: Across England in the UK, population screening for cardiovascular disease (CVD) primarily takes place within general practice in the form of the National Health Service Health Check. Additional screening sites such as occupational health are advocated to improve the population impact. Aims: To investigate participant experiences with cardiovascular and type 2 diabetes risk assessment (RA) at occupational health and subsequent support-seeking at general practice. Methods: Face-to-face interviews were conducted for this qualitative study. Participants were recruited at three workplaces; a steel works and two hospital sites. Using interpretive phenomenological analyses, themes were drawn from salient narratives and categorically organized. Results: There were 29 participants. Themes (n = 16) were organized into two domains; factors that facilitated (n = 9) or thwarted (n = 7) participant engagement with the RA and general practice. All participants described the RA as worthwhile and strongly valued RA at occupational health. Those with obesity and high CVD risk highlighted their difficulties in making lifestyle changes. Participants reported confusion and anxiety when GP advice about medication appeared to contradict what participants had interpreted during RA at occupational health. Conclusions: This study highlights factors that facilitate or thwart engagement in cardiovascular RA at occupational health services and general practice follow-up. Stakeholders can integrate these factors into standard operating procedures to enhance participant engagement and enable safeguards that minimize potential harm to participants

    Performance assessments of the middle and late phase of rehabilitation following lower limb injury in professional rugby union players

The purpose of this study was to characterise the kinetic profile of the jumping strategy employed in rugby union players during the middle and late phases of rehabilitation following lower limb injury. Nine players from a professional rugby union team (height 1.80±0.06 m; mass 96.1±13.2 kg; age 25±3 years) were included in this study. The mean duration of the middle and late phases of rehabilitation were 10±5 weeks and 6±2 weeks respectively. Unilateral drop jump and unilateral lateral hurdle hop were used to characterise the middle and late phases respectively. The variables of interest were Initial peak landing force, ground contact time, net impulse, Instantaneous loading rate, flight time and second peak landing force. Differences were observed in kinetic jump profiles between uniplanar and multiplanar movements. A change in kinetic jumping strategy to attain the same performance magnitudes across both phases of rehabilitation was also observed. The results highlight the importance of practitioners using a range of functional assessments in return to play testing

    Characterising longitudinal alterations in postural control following lower limb injury in professional rugby union players

Assessment of player’s postural control following a lower limb injury is of interest to sports science and medicine practitioners due to its fundamental role in daily tasks and sporting activities. The purpose of this study was to measure the longitudinal changes in rugby union player’s postural control throughout return to play (RTP) following lower limb injury. Rehabilitation was divided into three phases – acute, middle and late. Nine players from a professional rugby union team (height 1.80±0.06 m; mass 96.1±13.2 kg; age 25±3 years) were included in this study. Static unilateral postural control was measured in the acute phase using a PASCO dual axis force platform (PS-2142). Dynamic postural control was measured using single axis PASCO force platforms (PS-2141) with the middle phase being assessed by unilateral drop jump and the late phase a unilateral lateral hurdle hop. During the acute phase, no improvement were observed between the initial testing session and end testing session, nor any differences between the end of the acute rehabilitation phase and pre-injury baseline. Whereas for the middle and late phase improvements were observed between the initial and end testing session, with smaller magnitudes of dynamic postural control adjustment (DPCA; p (p <0.05). However, when comparing the end testing session of the middle and late phase of RTP to pre-injury baseline deficits were reported in the ability to restore postural control to pre-injury levels, with larger magnitudes of DPCA (p <0.05). Therefore, greater focus in players’ RTP programmes needs to be given to the dynamic postural control players have on landing

    Applied Sport Science for Male Age-Grade Rugby Union in England

    Rugby union (RU) is a skill-collision team sport played at junior and senior levels worldwide. Within England, age-grade rugby governs the participation and talent development of youth players. The RU player development pathway has recently been questioned, regarding player performance and wellbeing, which sport science research can address. The purpose of this review was to summarise and critically appraise the literature in relation to the applied sport science of male age-grade RU players in England focusing upon 1) match-play characteristics, 2) training exposures, 3) physical qualities, 4) fatigue and recovery, 5) nutrition, 6) psychological challenges and development, and 7) injury. Current research evidence suggests that age, playing level and position influence the match-play characteristics of age-grade RU. Training exposures of players are described as ‘organised chaos’ due to the multiple environments and stakeholders involved in coordinating training schedules. Fatigue is apparent up to 72 hours post match-play. Well developed physical qualities are important for player development and injury risk reduction. The nutritional requirements are high due to the energetic costs of collisions. Concerns around the psychological characteristics have also been identified (e.g., perfectionism). Injury risk is an important consideration with prevention strategies available. This review highlights the important multi-disciplinary aspects of sport science for developing age-grade RU players for continued participation and player development. The review describes where some current practices may not be optimal, provides a framework to assist practitioners to effectively prepare age-grade players for the holistic demands of youth RU and considers areas for future research

    Effects of precompetition state anxiety interventions on performance time and accuracy among amateur soccer players: Revisiting the matching hypothesis

    In this study, we tested the matching ypothesis, which contends that administration of a cognitive or somatic anxiety intervention should be matched to a participant's dominant anxiety response. Sixty-one male soccer players (mean age 31.6 years, s=6.3) were assigned to one of four groups based on their responses to the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2, which was modified to include a directional scale. Interventions were randomly administered in a counterbalanced order 10 min before each performance trial on a soccer skill test. The dominantly cognitive anxious group (n=17), the dominantly somatic anxious group (n=17), and the non-anxious control intervention group (n=14) completed a baseline performance trial. The second and third trials were completed with random administration of brief cognitive and somatic interventions. The non-anxious control group (n=13) completed three trials with no intervention. A mixed-model, GroupTreatment multivariate analysis of variance indicated significant (P0.05), or performance time or accuracy (P>0.05). The present findings do not provide support for the matching hypothesis for state anxiety intensity and direction, or for performance

    Predicted 10-year risk of cardiovascular disease is influenced by the risk equation adopted: a cross-sectional analysis

    Background Validated risk equations are currently recommended to assess individuals to determine those at ‘high risk’ of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, there is no longer a risk ‘equation of choice’. Aim This study examined the differences between four commonly-used CVD risk equations. Design and setting Cross-sectional analysis of individuals who participated in a workplace-based risk assessment in Carmarthenshire, south Wales. Method Analysis of 790 individuals (474 females, 316 males) with no prior diagnosis of CVD or diabetes. Ten-year CVD risk was predicted by entering the relevant variables into the QRISK2, Framingham Lipids, Framingham BMI, and JBS2 risk equations. Results The Framingham BMI and JBS2 risk equations predicted a higher absolute risk than the QRISK2 and Framingham Lipids equations, and CVD risk increased concomitantly with age irrespective of which risk equation was adopted. Only a small proportion of females (0–2.1%) were predicted to be at high risk of developing CVD using any of the risk algorithms. The proportion of males predicted at high risk ranged from 5.4% (QRISK2) to 20.3% (JBS2). After age stratification, few differences between isolated risk factors were observed in males, although a greater proportion of males aged ≄50 years were predicted to be at ‘high risk’ independent of risk equation used. Conclusions Different risk equations can influence the predicted 10-year CVD risk of individuals. More males were predicted at ‘high risk’ using the JBS2 or Framingham BMI equations. Consideration should also be given to the number of isolated risk factors, especially in younger adults when evaluating CVD risk

    A technical skill training framework and skill load measurements for the Rugby Union tackle

    Drawing from skill acquisition and development literature, we present a novel tackle skill training framework. The framework outlines the training purpose (technique proficiency, technique capacity, skill proficiency and skill capacity), skill workload measurements (available information, task difficulty, rating of perceived challenge, skill load), as well as the training conditions and coaching style for the tackle in rugby union. Using this framework and skill load measurements, we propose a pre-season tackle training plan. This tackle skill framework and skill load measurements serve as potential preventive measures for tackle injury risk while improving players’ tackle performance

    A influĂȘncia dos fatores e processos psicolĂłgicos no desempenho desportivo dos atletas estĂĄ, de uma forma geral, amplamente demonstrada; todavia, poucas investigaçÔes procuraram estudar esta relação nos treinadores. Neste sentido, empregando uma entrevista semi-estruturada, a presente investigação procurou, junto de seis treinadores de elite com idades compreendidas entre os 55 e os 63 anos (M = 59 ± 3,03) de diversas modalidades, identificar as caracterĂ­sticas/competĂȘncias psicolĂłgicas mais importantes para o sucesso desportivo, as principais fontes de “stress” e ansiedade experienciadas e as estratĂ©gias de “coping” a que recorriam em situaçÔes estressantes e/ou problemĂĄticas, adicionalmente, pretendeu explorar o papel de outras emoçÔes no seu desempenho.
