The purposes of this study are to examine the process of how nurses engage in a professional development program that draws on reading and creative narrative writing related to their professional values and ideals and to examine the nurses‘ perspectives on how their involvement in the process and program relates to changes in their professional roles

Cultural and Personal Influences on Body Satisfaction in Mexican American Women

    Get PDF
The current study extended prior research examining the impact of acculturation on body satisfaction while integrating possible mediating variables for a sample of Mexican American women. Specifically, the study examined the relationships among acculturation (ARSMA-II), acculturative stress related to racism and immigration (HWSSS), objectified body consciousness (OBCS), SES, age, BMI, and body dissatisfaction. Outcome measures of body dissatisfaction included the EDI subscales of Body Dissatisfaction, Bulimia, Drive for Thinness, and Ineffectiveness, as well as the Body Esteem Scale (BES). Participants were 352 women of Mexican descent between the ages of 18 and 50 years recruited through California State University, San Bernardino and in the community. Using SEM, fit indices indicated model fit was moderate with model modifications. Results supported the hypothesis that a significant indirect relationship exists between acculturation and body dissatisfaction, which is accounted for by the intermediating variables in the model. Greater acculturation was associated with less acculturative stress, but increased objectified body consciousness. Increasing objectified body consciousness was directly associated with higher body dissatisfaction while acculturative stress was not directly associated with body dissatisfaction. BMI, age, and SES were found to be significant variables that need to be accounted for when examining other influences on body dissatisfaction. Shedding light on the unique factors that trigger body dissatisfaction for Latinas allows for the development of culturally sensitive interventions for related outcomes such as eating disorders. Findings indicate changes through acculturation plays a lesser role in body dissatisfaction for Mexican American women than whether they internalize societal standards. Post-hoc analyses indicated that increased acculturative stress is related to increased objectified body consciousness and endorsement of a greater Mexican orientation is associated with lower body dissatisfaction. Implications of the study include the importance of assisting Latinas in maintaining a positive connection to their culture of origin and in critically evaluating mainstream body ideals as the internalization of these ideals is significantly associated with body dissatisfaction. A further implication is the importance of assessing Latina women\u27s acculturation levels and experiences of acculturative stressors such as racism in terms of shaping their attitudes toward their bodies and the development of disordered eating

Analysis techniques for residual acceleration data

    Get PDF
Various aspects of residual acceleration data are of interest to low-gravity experimenters. Maximum and mean values and various other statistics can be obtained from data as collected in the time domain. Additional information may be obtained through manipulation of the data. Fourier analysis is discussed as a means of obtaining information about dominant frequency components of a given data window. Transformation of data into different coordinate axes is useful in the analysis of experiments with different orientations and can be achieved by the use of a transformation matrix. Application of such analysis techniques to residual acceleration data provides additional information than what is provided in a time history and increases the effectiveness of post-flight analysis of low-gravity experiments

Return to Play Variations Due to Rehabilitation Compliance in Division 1 Athletes with Midfoot Sprains

CASE HISTORY: Patient A was a 20-year-old collegiate running back with a history of a left midfoot sprain in the previous spring season. Patient A presented with right foot pain after the second game of the season. He reported pain and a feeling of a ‘fallen arch’ when weight bearing. Patient A reported symptoms one day after the injury and was evaluated and treated immediately. Patient B was an 18-year-old collegiate cornerback with no significant history. Patient B reported midfoot pain after being tackled during a practice. Patient B was assessed in the athletic training clinical after practice. Patient B reported moderate pain with ambulation and a fallen arch with ambulation. PHYSICAL EXAM: Patient A had a positive tuning fork test and was referred for an X-ray because of a suspected fracture. Patient B had mild swelling in his midfoot, was tender to palpation over the dorsal 1st tarsometatarsal joint and had pain with 1st tarsometatarsal joint mobilization. Patient B was referred for an X-ray to rule out a fracture. DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSES: Midfoot bony contusion, Midfoot fracture, and Midfoot dislocation. TESTS & RESULTS: Patient A had an X-ray of his right foot which was negative for an acute fracture of the midfoot. Patient B had and X-ray of the left foot which was also negative for any acute fractures. FINAL DIAGNOSIS: Grade 1 Midfoot Sprain in both patients. DISCUSSION: Patient A’s history of a more severe midfoot sprain aided the patient in being compliant with rehabilitation exercises and the athletic training staff’s recommendations. Patient B was a freshman with no history of serious injuries. Patient B was non-compliant with rehabilitation exercises and the athletic training staff’s recommendations. Patient A never missed a rehabilitation session while patient B frequently missed 2-3 rehabilitation sessions a week. Rehabilitation compliance is a key factor in the return to participation timeline. OUTCOME OF THE CASE: Patient A returned to full participation after 3 weeks while patient B return to full participation after 6 weeks. RETURN TO ACTIVITY AND FURTHER FOLLOW-UP: Both patients returned to participation performing at the same level prior to injury

Flora and Fauna in East Asian Art

Flora and Fauna in East Asian Art is the fourth annual exhibition curated by students enrolled in the Art History Methods course. This exhibition highlights the academic achievements of six student curators: Samantha Frisoli ’18, Daniella Snyder ’18, Gabriella Bucci ’19, Melissa Casale ’19, Keira Koch ’19, and Paige Deschapelles ’20. The selection of artworks in this exhibition considers how East Asian artists portrayed similar subjects of flora and fauna in different media including painting, prints, embroidery, jade, and porcelain. This exhibition intends to reveal the hidden meanings behind various representations of flora and fauna in East Asian art by examining the iconography, cultural context, aesthetic and function of each object.https://cupola.gettysburg.edu/artcatalogs/1025/thumbnail.jp

Boston Women's Fund Annual Report 2008

    Get PDF
The Boston Women's Fund provides start-up and on-going funding for women's/girls' organizations or projects that address social and economic injustice. Our focus is on women with the least access to resources, who have been excluded from full participation in society because of their race, class, age, ability, immigrant status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or religion. Women and girls organizing on their own behalf is a priority for the Fund. The Boston Women's Fund understands organizing as a collective action to challenge the status quo, demand changes in policy and practice, and educate communities about root causes and just solutions. The Fund recognizes that there are a variety of stages and strategies that lead to community organizing. Therefore, BWF supports strategies that build community, encourage collaborations with other organizations, increase skills and/or access to resources, and produce leadership from within the constituency directly affected.

Attention, Awareness, and the Perception of Auditory Scenes

Auditory perception and cognition entails both low-level and high-level processes, which are likely to interact with each other to create our rich conscious experience of soundscapes. Recent research that we review has revealed numerous influences of high-level factors, such as attention, intention, and prior experience, on conscious auditory perception. And recently, studies have shown that auditory scene analysis tasks can exhibit multistability in a manner very similar to ambiguous visual stimuli, presenting a unique opportunity to study neural correlates of auditory awareness and the extent to which mechanisms of perception are shared across sensory modalities. Research has also led to a growing number of techniques through which auditory perception can be manipulated and even completely suppressed. Such findings have important consequences for our understanding of the mechanisms of perception and also should allow scientists to precisely distinguish the influences of different higher-level influences
