    Platelet to lymphocyte and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio in the first trimester of pregnancy, are they useful for predicting spontaneous miscarriage? A case-control study

    Background: In 15% of all clinical pregnancies, a miscarriage can occur, but the exact cause of this phenomenon is not fully understood. However, it is believed that a faulty placenta, which triggers an inflammatory response in the mother’s body, may be one of the causes. Medical literature has increasingly focused on 2 indicators of inflammation, the plateletlymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR). Despite this, there has yet to be a study conducted that examines the rates of PLR and NLR in cases of miscarriage. Objective: This study aims to determine whether there is an increase in complete blood count inflammatory parameters such as NLR and PLR in women who experience miscarriages. Materials and Methods: This retrospective case-control study was conducted from March 2021 to March 2022, across 3 academic hospitals in Tehran, Iran. A total of 240 participants were enrolled comprising individuals with either miscarriages or normal pregnancies (n = 120/each). Data were collected from the medical records of participants aged between 18-42 yr old, with gestational age ranging from 6-13 wk. The demographic information, including age, body mass index, parity, history of abortion, number of abortions, number of living children, hematocrit and hemoglobin levels, platelet distribution width (PDW), PLR, NLR, mean platelet volume, and platelet were extracted from their records. The gestational age was also recorded. Results: A total of 240 participants were recruited for the study. PDW, NLR, PLR, and lymphocyte values were higher in the miscarriage group compared to the healthy normal pregnant women (p < 0.001). Mean platelet volumes were found to be lower in the miscarriage group compared to the healthy normal pregnant women (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Although, no statistically significant difference was observed in the hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelets, and neutrophils in these 2 groups of pregnant women. The higher inflammatory markers including PDW, NLR, and PLR could potentially aid in the speculation of defective placentation as a contributing factor to the development of miscarriage. Measurement of these markers may be useful to predict pregnancy leading to miscarriage. Key words: Spontaneous abortion, Inflammation, Neutrophils, Lymphocytes, Blood platelet, Pregnancy

    A review on Quarantine during COVID-19 Outbreak: Lessons Learned from Previous Epidemics

    Background: Since the emergence in December 2019, the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused a global pandemic that has infected so many people all around the world. As there are no vaccination or antiviral treatment available yet, public health measures play a substantial role in the management of this pandemic. Governments of affected countries have imposed different quarantine policies and travel bans. As quarantine can have many controversial aspects, this review intends to clarify its role in disease control and other aspects of human everyday life with due attention to a couple of epidemics in the past (SARS, MERS, and flu) and ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.   Methods: We conducted a thorough search in PubMed, Research Gate, Google Scholar, Excerpta Media Database (EMBASE), and Web of Science databases and collected all relevant articles to Quarantine in the past epidemics (SARS, MERS, and flu) as well as ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.     Results:  A total of 176 articles were extracted in our primary search process. Primarily, 53 articles have been excluded because of duplication. The other 44 articles have been excluded due to different reasons (Lack of useful information and eligibility of data). Finally, 79 articles were selected for more evaluation (published until April 2020).   Conclusion: By having previous epidemics, including SARS, MERS, and flu, in mind, quarantine and isolation seem to be proper choices for this situation. But, as this epidemy is bigger than former ones, stricter public health measurements, such as serious social distancing and community-wide containment, are recommended

    Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) is an anionic surfactant, which has a wide range of usage in the health sector and in dental pharmaceutical products, especially in toothpastes. The objective of this review was to investigate the effects of SLS containing dentifrices on oral and periodontal health, possible side effects, and its benefits. A thorough literature search was done using databases of PubMed and Google Scholar and finally, 40 articles were included in the study. This narrative review revealed the sources of discrepancy and conflicting results regarding the impact of SLS on oral cavity as well as a lack of sufficient evidence in most topics. Hence, the evidence suggests improved drug bioavailability when used as a solubilizer, improved plaque control, and reduction in bad breath. On the other hand, SLS can serve as a risk indicator of prolonged oral wound healing time, recurrent aphthous stomatitis

    Introduction: Chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs), global health problem and it is a threat to health and the development of countries. Currently, the number of people with COVID-19 as well as the resulting death toll is rising sharply worldwide. People with underlying diseases may be at greater risk. Aim: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the chronic non-communicable diseases in the epidemic (COVID-19): Investigation of risk factors, control and care. Meterials and methods: To access the articles, including international databases Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, Embase were searched using the keywords of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs), chronic, risk factors, prevention and control, self-efficacy and self-care and their various combinations using AND/OR operators. No language restrictions were applied to the search process. Results: Based on the evidence, NCDs, exacerbate the negative consequences of COVID-19. according to the results of this study, Among the patients admitted with COVID-19, The most common underlying diseases, were in these people, include, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), smoking, malignancy, chronic kidney disease, and diabetes mellitus. Obesity may be considered as a potential COVID-19 risk factor. Conclusions: Although lifestyle, nutrition, and medical interventions are important for the early prevention of NCDs, having the tools and resources to use information more effectively is more important One of the determining and effective factors in maintaining health and preventing the aggravation of signs and symptoms of the disease COVID-19, especially in chronic diseases, is to perform self-care behaviors.     An analytical study on nonlinear viscoelastic lubrication in journal bearings

    Abstract This paper presents a novel analytical solution for journal-bearing viscoelastic lubrication using the perturbation method. The nonlinear Giesekus model was used for the constitutive equations to study the effects of fluid elasticity, shear-thinning viscometric functions, and strain-hardening elongational viscosity of viscoelastic lubrication. The investigation focuses on the impact of characteristic parameters such as mobility factor, eccentricity ratio, and Weissenberg number on the fluid film pressure distribution, load capacity, and shear stress. Although distinguishing between the normal stress differences and extensional viscosity in mixed viscoelastic flows is complicated, we investigated the role and contribution of these two factors. By increasing the elasticity of the fluid, the portion of both mentioned parameters increases consequently. Furthermore, analyses and comparisons show the contributions of the first normal stress and elongational viscosity to the load capacity of the bearing through the stress ratio and flow type parameter for the first time. The research findings indicate that fluid elasticity enhances the load capacity of the bearing compared to a Newtonian lubricant with the same effective viscosity. Moreover, the bearing load capacity is divided into two regions. In the linear region, the mobility factor and Weissenberg numbers have minimal effects leading to a linear increase in the load distribution, and in the exponential region, the load capacity changes are considerable. This research provides valuable insights into the behavior of viscoelastic lubrication in journal-bearing systems

    Prevalence, diagnosis, and manifestations of brucellosis: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    OBJECTIVES: Brucellosis is one of the most prevalent zoonotic diseases common between humans and animals. Despite eradication efforts, the burden of the disease is well-known in endemic countries and in countries where brucellosis has not been an important health issue until recently. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence, diagnosis, and manifestations of brucellosis. METHODS: In this study, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and Google scholar databases were systematically searched to find studies published from 2011 to 2021. The search was conducted using text words and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) Terms on the prevalence of brucellosis. Stata software 14.0 was used for all analyses. RESULTS: Based on the results, the pooled prevalence of brucellosis was 15.27% (95% CI: 9.68–21.86; heterogeneity I(2) index: 97.43; p < 0.001) for man and 15.33% (95% CI: 7.19–25.75; heterogeneity I(2) index: 98.19; p < 0.001) for woman. Age (coefficient: 0.240; p = 0.480), gender (coefficient: −0.017; p = 0.800), and publication year (coefficient: 0.114; p = 0.861) showed no significant effect on heterogeneity among studies. Egger's test indicated a significant publication bias for the prevalence of brucellosis (coefficient 3.894; p < 0.001). Moreover, the trim-and-fill method exhibited that the adjusted prevalence of brucellosis (18.30%, 95% CI: 14.10–22.52) was not significantly different from the original prevalence of brucellosis. CONCLUSION: The pooled estimate for brucellosis prevalence was estimated as 15.53%. To better understand the epidemiology of brucellosis globally, more extensive studies are needed to be conducted throughout the world, especially in developing and low-income countries

    Cytokines produced by T helper cells (Th cells) have essential roles in the body's defense against viruses. Type 1 T helper (Th1) cells are essential for the host defense toward intracellular pathogens while T helper type 2 (Th2) cells are considered to be critical for the helminthic parasites' elimination swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus, a disease led to an epidemic in 2009 and rapidly spread globally via human-to-human transmission. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has caused a global pandemic in 2020 and is a serious threat to the public health.     Comparison between Alpha and Calendula for Healing of Third-Degree Burn in Rats: Burn healing in rat by Alpha and Calendula

    In this study, we compared the effects of Calendula and Alpha ointment in the treatment of burn wounds and also compared its results with silver sulfadiazine (SSD). Seventy-five male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five groups, and similar burn ulcers were produced on anterior surface of thigh of rats. In the first group of rats no treatment was applied, base gel was applied topically to group II, in groups III-V, Alpha, SSD, and Calendula preparations were applied, respectively. Wound healing, contraction, and histopathological evaluation were evaluated at the end of 7, 14, and 21 days. Alpha ointment was equally effective as Calendula gel, and had better efficacy compared to SSD for all markers of wound healing at days of 7, 14, and 21.Alpha and Calendula preparations are less expensive drugs and significantly improve the quality of wound healing and scar formation and are more appropriate treatment choices than SSD. Therefore, we recommended them as alternative to SSD, especially in patients with low economical backgrounds or in those who show adverse reactions to SSD

    Pharmacotherapeutic Potential of Garlic in Age-Related Neurological Disorders

    Age-related neurological disorders [ANDs] involve neurodegenerative diseases [NDDs] such as Alzheimer's disease [AD], the most frequent kind of dementia in elderly people, and Parkinson's disease [PD], and also other disorders like epilepsy and migraine. Although ANDs are multifactorial, Aging is a principal risk factor for them. The common and most main pathologic features among ANDs are inflammation, oxidative stress, and misfolded proteins accumulation. Since failing brains caused by ANDs impose a notable burden on public health and their incidence is increasing, a lot of works has been done to overcome them. Garlic, Allium sativum, has been used for different medical purposes globally and more than thousands of publications have reported its health benefits. Garlic and aged garlic extract are considered potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidants agents and can have remarkable neuroprotective effects. This review is aimed to summarize knowledge on the pharmacotherapeutic potential of garlic and its components in ANDs.
