Space imagery and some geomorphological problems of the Guiana Shield, South America

Some ongoing involvement in regional geomorphologic research in South America is described. Because of association with LARS at Purdue University, there has been engagement, vicarious or adivsory, in projects which led to LANDSAT 1-2 mapping of the natural resources of Bolivia (1:8,000,000 scale), and preparation of a geographic information system which mapped the general hydrology, geology, soils, and vegetation of Ecuador (1:4,000,000 scale). Currently we are involved more specifically in geological-geomorphological mapping of the Venezuelan portion of the Guiana shield, and because of manuscript limitations only questions pertinent to this region are posed in the ensuing discussion

Delineation of the boundaries of a buried pre-glacial valley with LANDSAT-1 data

The continuity of a narrow meandering strip of Udoll (prairie) soils running east and west for approximately 40 miles across north central Indiana in an area predominantly of Udalfs (timber soils) was detected from LANDSAT-1 data taken on June 9, 1973. This data was processed through a clustering procedure and classified with resulting increased definition of the boundaries among soils grouped according to nine categories and vegetation to two categories of reflectance. This dark stretch of prairie soil is believed to have formed in the heavy textured, poorly drained glacial debris which filled a major pre-glacial tributary of the Teays River System. Ready identification and location of the valley has significance to soil survey and land classification people as a guide to soil classification and land use and to geologists as a guide to location of a potentially economically significant aquifer

Its effectiveness and its safeness are well documented. If the substance is applied in the inner phase of a disperse system its duration of action can be raised and its toxic side effects can be lowered, because the repellent vaporizes slower. DEET containing suspensions which are stabilized with Hypromellose and based on hardfats show a stability depending on DEET content. A high DEET contents means a low stability of only a few hours. Suspensions without DEET are stable for at least one week. The particles in the suspension first agglomerate and than coalesce. Examinations show that DEET and hardfat separate at room temperature. This separation is most likely the reason for the instability of the systems. The following examinations methods were used: optical examinations with a polarizations microscope, NMR, X-ray structure analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, transmission electron microscope and particle size measurements

Not Just Women’s Work: Recruiting Men to Occupational Therapy

    Get PDF
Compared to women, men are less likely to become occupational therapists (OT). To have a more diverse workforce, and to relate to various patient groups, reasons men do not enter the field of OT must be better understood. Our study compares men and women in their familiarity with OT and desire to work in the field. Data were gathered using an online, self-report survey administered to students at a public university in the southeast. The sample included 334 undergraduate students who were in majors that often serve as feeder programs to OT graduate programs. The average age was 19.8 years (SD = 3.84). A majority of the students were women (80.1%). Ratings of familiarity with OT or interest in OT were generally low, with no significant differences between men and women. Women were more likely to endorse a calling orientation (i.e., work brings fulfillment to life) to their work, while men were more likely to endorse a career (i.e., advancement indicates achievement) or job orientation (i.e., the job is a means to an end). Career orientation predicted a greater interest in entering healthcare for men, but not women. More broadly, men and women may be interested in healthcare for different reasons, and this information needs to be utilized in marketing the profession

Interstate Commerce and State Control Over Foreign Corporations - Since Bank of Augusta v. Earle, 13 Pet. 519, there seems to have been no real occasion to doubt the power of a state totally to exclude foreign corporations seeking to engage in intrastate business only. The power to exclude being absolute, there has been no question as to the right of the state to allow the entrance of the foreign corporation for such business upon terms, and the terms may be of any sort, reasonable or unreasonable, except that the corporation seeking to enter cannot as a condition precedent to such entry be required to surrender a right or privilege conferred upon it by the federal constitution or statutes. For example, a condition that no case should be removed by the corporation to the federal courts was declared invalid, and the corporation was allowed to remove cases despite the condition
