Temperature dependent charge transport mechanisms in carbon sphere/polymer composites

Carbon spheres (CS) with diameters in the range 210μm2 - 10 \mu m were prepared via hydrolysis of a sucrose solution at 200oC,200^o C, and later annealed in N2N_2 at 800oC.800^o C. The spheres were highly conducting but difficult to process into thin films or pressed pellets. In our previous work, composite samples of CS and the insulating polymer polyethylene oxide (PEO) were prepared and their charge transport was analyzed in the temperature range 80K<T<300K. 80 K < T < 300 K. Here, we analyze charge transport in CS coated with a thin polyaniline (PANi) film doped with hydrochloric acid (HCl), in the same temperature range. The goal is to study charge transport in the CS using a conducting polymer (PANi) as a binder and compare with that occurring at CS/PEO. A conductivity maxima was observed in the CS/PEO composite but was absent in CS/PANi. Our data analysis shows that variable range hopping of electrons between polymeric chains in PANi-filled gaps between CS takes on a predominant part in transport through CS/PANi composites, whereas in CS/PEO composites, electrons travel through gaps between CS solely by means of direct tunneling. This difference in transport mechanisms results in different temperature dependences of the conductivity.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

RFID-triggered power activation for smart dynamic inductive wireless power transfer

    Get PDF
A RFID-triggered power activation system is devised, implemented and tested as the key sensing mechanism for controlling wireless power transfer from an inductive lane to a moving lightweight electric vehicle. The RFID reader and tag used are based on ISO/IEC-14443A compatible types, working at 13.56 MHz, one of the least expensive currently available passive near-field technologies. In order to fit lightweight electric mobility application requirements, the RFID magnetic antennas are redesigned to larger than standard sizes, both at reader and tag sides, increasing the detection volume without increasing the required reading power, thus permitting the reuse of commercial RFID circuits and embedded protocol software. To trigger the wireless power transfer, a RFID reader coil is placed magnetically orthogonal to each primary power coil to be controlled, at the extremity where electric vehicles are expected to come from, in a one-way traffic. The power is turned off automatically when the vehicle leaves the primary coil field and the power demand is extinguished, or when time-out is reached. An inductive lane constituted of a sequence of such RFID-controlled primary coils can detect the presence of authorized electric vehicles and smartly energize the lane, manipulating the unique identifier codes and other information stored in the on-board tag to more efficiently handle dissimilar power level demands, and to implement tolling. The performance of the system is predicted based on the reconstructed 3D digital model of the RFID main detection lobe.Universidade de Vigo - Department of Electronics Technolog

Role of Smac/DIABLO in cancer progression

    Get PDF
Second mitochondria-derived activator of caspase/direct inhibitor of apoptosis-binding protein with low pI (Smac/DIABLO) is a proapoptogenic mitochondrial protein that is released to the cytosol in response to diverse apoptotic stimuli, including commonly used chemotherapeutic drugs. In the cytosol, Smac/DIABLO interacts and antagonizes inhibitors of apoptosis proteins (IAPs), thus allowing the activation of caspases and apoptosis. This activity has prompted the synthesis of peptidomimetics that could potentially be used in cancer therapy. For these reasons, several authors have analyzed the expression levels of Smac/DIABLO in samples of patients from different tumors. Although dissimilar results have been found, a tissue-specific role of this protein emerges from the data. The objective of this review is to present the current knowledge of the Smac/DIABLO role in cancer and its possible use as a marker or therapeutic target for drug design

Dynamic inductive power transfer lane design for e-bikes

    Get PDF
This paper presents the concept and initial test results of an inductive lane design capable of dynamic and wirelessly transfer power to electric bicycles (e-bikes). On the lane side, a sequence of oblong primary coils embedded underneath ground surface, along the vehicle path, can be independently excited by high frequency alternating current. The oscillating magnetic field of each primary coil is individually enabled when a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tag on board of the e-bike is detected and authenticated by an auxiliary coil laying close to that primary coil. On the e-bike, energy for the powertrain is harvested from the lane by a secondary coil that is installed around its rear wheel. When the e-bike is moving over inter-coil gaps, or anywhere away from the inductive lane, on-board power is sustained with the excess energy stored during transits over energized coils. Preliminary results from a prototyped module demonstrate the feasibility of the system, which could also be used by similarly adapted lightweight electric vehicles, such as rickshaws, electric wheel chairs and other electric personal mobility devices, favoring a new, low cost, sustainable urban modal variant.Research partially supported by grant SFRH/BD/52349/2013 from FCT, the Portuguese funding agency supporting science, technology and innovation, under the scope of the MIT-Portugal Program. © 2018, Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.OBJECTIVE: To assess drug susceptibility and characterize Clostridium difficile ribotypes in isolates from two tertiary-care hospitals in Mexico. METHODS: Isolates were evaluated for genotyping, antimicrobial susceptibility testing and detection of mutations associated with drug resistance. PCR ribotyping was performed using a combination of gel-based and capillary electrophoresis-based approaches. RESULTS: MIC50 and MIC90 were ≥128 mg/L for ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, clindamycin, and rifampicin. There was no reduced susceptibility to metronidazole or tetracycline; however, reduced susceptibility to vancomycin (≥4 mg/L) and fidaxomicin (≥2 mg/L) was detected in 50 (40.3%) and 4 (3.2%) isolates, respectively. Furthermore, the rpoB Arg505Lys mutation was more frequently detected in isolates with high minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) to rifampicin (≥32 mg/L) (OR = 52.5; 95% CI = 5.17-532.6; p < 0.000). Of the 124 C. difficile isolates recovered, 84 (66.7%) were of ribotype 027, 18 (14.5%) of ribotype 001, and the remainder were other ribotypes (353, 255, 220, 208, 176, 106, 076, 020, 019, 017, 014, 012, 003, and 002). CONCLUSION: Ribotypes 027 and 001 were the most frequent C. difficile isolates recovered in this study, and demonstrated higher MICs. Furthermore, we found four isolates with reduced susceptibility to fidaxomicin, raising a concern since this drug is currently unavailable in Mexican Hospitals.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
