This work uses the methodologies of both art history and medical sociology through the ‘syndemic’ framework to engage in close readings of two selected artworks, Exit (1997) by Nancer LeMoins and Violation of Africa (1984) by Affrekka Jefferson. An interdisciplinary approach to these works enables consideration of how multiple marginalized identities—i.e., living with a stigmatized illness, being a woman, being LGBTQIA+, being a person of color—appear in visual art and shape illness experience; these ideas are investigated through a formal and iconographic reading of the selected artworks. Placing art as the foundation of this analysis reveals its astounding impact and utility in the face of an ongoing pandemic, constantly subject to the turning tides of healthcare policy, biomedical discovery, and social norms. In this dynamic context, visual art is more than a medium for expression—it is a transformative tool that promotes healing, cultivates visibility and community, and fans the flames of social reform

Association of Dental Caries with Iron Deficiency Anaemia

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries is a multifactorial chronic non communicable disease caused by cariogenic bacterium Streptococcus mutans. Poor oral health has a significant impact on general health and impairs the quality of life of the individual. The pain, problems with chewing and eating caused by dental caries also cause restriction of daily activities thereby causing millions of school and work hours to be lost each year throughout the world. In 1983 oral health was declared as part of the Strategy for Health For All and in 1989, World Health Organization endorsed the promotion of oral health as an important part of Health for All by the year 2000. In addition, World Health Day in 1994 was entirely dedicated to oral health which reflects the importance given to oral health. AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of the study is to determine an association between Dental caries and iron deficiency anemia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Children who are outpatients and inpatients in Government Rajaji Hospital,Madurai were subjected to dental examination.Hundred children with dental caries were selected from the age group of 1 to 12 years. The children were examined at Government Rajaji Hospital by a single examiner. They were examined in the dental clinic under a medical light, using a sharp probe, cotton rolls, and a dental mirror. Data on caries prevalence in relation to the haemoglobin level were collected through previously validated studies. Dental caries assessment was done according to the WHO using DMFT score.Participants were questioned regarding breast feeding and bottle feeding patterns, snacking habits, brushing habits, rinsing mouth after feeds, use of fluoridated tooth paste and regular visits with dentist. of the relation. Age and sex matched controls without dental caries were also selected. 2 ml of blood is collected from each of them and subjected to HB, MCV, HCT and serum iron. The mean Hemoglobin, Mean Corpuscular Volume and Haematocrit were compared between two groups. The observed data are tabulated and statistical analysis is done. The serum iron is analysed using colorimetric method using ferrozine as reagent. RESULTS: Children attending outpatient clinic at Government Rajaji Hospital at Madurai and those admitted inpatient were screened for the presence of dental caries using DMFT score according to WHO.A total of 100 patients with dental caries is randomly selected . Age and sex matched controls without dental caries were also selected for comparison. Among our study group of 100 people with dental caries, 55% are males and 45% are females.Majority of study group had a DMFT score of 2. The mean DMFT among the study group is 3. I n our study, DMFT score is inversely proportional to serum iron. This means, the serum iron is low for higher DMFT scores. The mean serum iron among the dental caries group is 49.32 and in control group is 98.75. The mean hemoglobin in the study group is 10.458 and 11.476 in the control group. The mean MCV in the caries group is 67.89 and in the control group is 75.75. The mean hematocrit in the caries group is 31.37 and 34.428 in the control group. This shows an association between iron deficiency anaemia and dental caries. The mean DMFT score is 1.803 in the breast feeding group and 3.276 in the bottle feeding group. This again confirms the known fact that breast feeding protects against caries and bottle feeding promotes caries. There is no significant difference in the DMFTscore between people who brush daily or rinse their mouth after feeds. CONCLUSION: The findings of the present study revealed that children with dental caries appear to be at significantly greater chance of having lower serum iron and lower hemoglobin levels compared to control group. Thus, children with dental caries appear to be at significantly greater risk for iron deficiency anemia than cavity free children. Hence, our study concludes that dental caries is associated with iron deficiency anemia. Our study also shows a higher DMFT score with bottle feeding children compared to breast feeding children. Through our study, we come to know that dental caries may serve as a risk marker for iron deficiency anemia. Health behavioural interventions targeting dental caries could help prevent iron deficiency anemia thereby reducing the health burden of community. Further studies have to be done in larger populations to really refute or support an association between dental caries and iron deficiency anemia

Audit Firm Size, Auditor Industry Specialization and Audit Quality: An Empirical Study of Indonesian State-Owned Enterprises

    Get PDF
Early researches on listed firms proved that both audit firm size (Carey and Simnett, 2006; Francis and Yu, 2009; Chen et al.2009; Choi et al., 2010) and auditor industry specialization (Balsam et al., 2003; Krishnan, 2003; Solomon et al. 1999; Monsouri et al., 2009; Gull et al., 2009) have significant influence on audit quality. The present research was intended to determine whether audit firm size and auditor industry specialization have significant influence on audit quality in Indonesian State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs). This research is critical, since there are several case of financial statement manipulation  that have been performed on SOEs since 2001, and in 2003, 12 auditors have been recommended by BPK (Badan Pemeriksa Keuangan - The Supreme Audit of Indonesia) to be investigated by PPAJP  (Pusat Pembinaan Akuntan dan Jasa Penilai – The Center for Accountants and Apraisers Supervision) due to their role in manipulating SOE’S financial statement, which they were audited (Langgeng Subur, Chairman of PPAJP, akuntanonline.com, September 16th, 2013).  The research was conducted on 36 SOEs by using 108 financial statements of years 2010-2012.  It found out that both audit firm size and auditor industry specialization have insignificant influence on audit quality of SOEs in Indonesia. The findings of  the present research were inconsistent with the earlier researches conducted on some listed firms (Carey and Simnett, 2006; Francis and Yu, 2009; Chen et al. 2009; Choi et al. 2010; Krishnan, 2003; Solomon et al.1999; Monsouri et al. 2009; Gull et al. 2009) that had found that both audit firm size and auditor industry specialization have significant influence on audit quality. Keywords: audit firm size, auditor industry specialization, audit qualit

The unexpected localization of PAD4 in monocytes: implications for rheumatoid arthritis pathogenesis

    Get PDF
Although anti-citrullinated protein autoantibodies (ACPAs) are a hallmark serological feature of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), the mechanisms and cellular sources behind the generation of the RA citrullinome remain incompletely defined. Peptidylarginine deiminase IV (PAD4), one of the key enzymatic drivers of citrullination in the RA joint, is expressed by granulocytes and monocytes; however, the subcellular localization and contribution of monocyte derived PAD4 to the generation of citrullinated autoantigens remain underexplored. In this study, we demonstrate that PAD4 displays a widespread cellular distribution in monocytes, including expression on the cell surface. Surface PAD4 was enzymatically active and capable of citrullinating extracellular fibrinogen and endogenous surface proteins in a calcium dose–dependent manner, and fibrinogen citrullinated by monocyte-surface PAD4 could be recognized by ACPAs. Several novel PAD4 substrates were identified on the monocyte surface via mass spectrometry, with citrullination of the CD11b and CD18 components of the Mac-1 integrin complex being the most abundant. Citrullinated Mac-1 was found to be a target of ACPAs in 25% of RA patients, and Mac-1 ACPAs were significantly associated with HLA-DRB1 shared epitope alleles, higher C-reactive protein and IL-6 levels, and more erosive joint damage. Our findings implicate the monocyte cell surface as a previously undescribed and consequential site of extracellular and cell surface autoantigen generation in RA. The mechanisms by which PAD4, which lacks conventional secretory signal sequences, traffics to extranuclear localizations are unknown. In this study, we also show that PAD4 was enriched in the organelle fraction of monocytes with evidence of citrullination of organelle proteins. We demonstrated that PAD4 can bind to several cytosolic, nuclear, and organelle proteins that may serve as binding partners for PAD4 to traffic intracellularly. Additionally, cell surface expression of PAD4 increased with monocyte differentiation into monocyte derived-dendritic cells and co-localized with several endocytic/autophagic and conventional secretory pathway markers, implicating the use of these pathways by PAD4 to traffic within the cell. Our results suggest that PAD4 is expressed in multiple subcellular localizations and may play previously unappreciated roles in physiologic and pathologic conditions

Stereo Above Threshold Ionization: Phase Meter

    Get PDF
The Carrier envelope offset phase or the so called "absolute phase" governs the Spatio- temporal evaluation of the electric field of a short laser pulse and this field in turn governs the interaction of matter with such pulses. The precise measurement and stabilization of this quantity is of great importance for attosecond physics and virtually every other application that benefits from ultra short laser pulses. The aim of this project is to build a Spectrometer, which we call the Stereo ATI phase-meter, for measuring the absolute phase of short laser pulses. It involves the stereo measurement of photo electrons of xenon gas ejected after ATI (Above Threshold Ionization). This approach to phase measurement is based on the belief that the spatial symmetry of photo-electron emission from a gaseous medium should be governed by the symmetry
