    We describe the simplification of 13C-13C correlation spectra obtained from a microcrystalline protein sample expressed on a growth medium of 10% fully 13C labeled glucose diluted in 90% natural abundance glucose as compared to a fully labeled sample. Such a labeling scheme facilitates the backbone and side-chain resonance assignment of Phe, Tyr, His, Asp, Asn, Ile, Lys and Pro and yields an unambiguous stereospecific assignment of the valine Cγ1, Cγ2 13C resonances and of Leucine Cδ

    Percutaneous coronary interventions in Europe: Prevalence, numerical estimates, and projections based on data up to 2004

    Aims : A registry mandated by the European Society of Cardiology collects data on trends in interventional cardiology within Europe. Special interest focuses on relative increases and ratios in new techniques and their distributions across Europe. We report the data through 2004 and give an overview of the development of coronary interventions since the first data collection in 1992. Methods and results : Questionnaires were distributed yearly to delegates of all national societies of cardiology represented in the European Society of Cardiology. The goal was to collect the case numbers of all local institutions and operators. The overall numbers of coronary angiographies increased from 1992 to 2004 from 684 000 to 2 238 000 (from 1250 to 3930 per million inhabitants). The respective numbers for percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) and coronary stenting procedures increased from 184 000 to 885 000 (from 335 to 1550) and from 3000 to 770 000 (from 5 to 1350), respectively. Germany was the most active country with 712 000 angiographies (8600), 249 000 angioplasties (3000), and 200 000 stenting procedures (2400) in 2004. The indication has shifted towards acute coronary syndromes, as demonstrated by rising rates of interventions for acute myocardial infarction over the last decade. The procedures are more readily performed and perceived safer, as shown by increasing rate of "ad hoc" PCIs and decreasing need for emergency coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). In 2004, the use of drug-eluting stents continued to rise. However, an enormous variability is reported with the highest rate in Switzerland (70%). If the rate of progression remains constant until 2010 the projected number of coronary angiographies will be over three million, and the number of PCIs about 1.5 million with a stenting rate of almost 100%. Conclusion : Interventional cardiology in Europe is ever expanding. New coronary revascularization procedures, alternative or complementary to balloon angioplasty, have come and gone. Only stenting has stood the test of time and matured to the default technique.     ECG Beat Representation and Delineation by Means of Variable Projection

    Objective: The electrocardiogram (ECG) follows a characteristic shape, which has led to the development of several mathematical models for extracting clinically important information. Our main objective is to resolve limitations of previous approaches, that means to simultaneously cope with various noise sources, perform exact beat segmentation, and to retain diagnostically important morphological information. Methods: We therefore propose a model that is based on Hermite and sigmoid functions combined with piecewise polynomial interpolation for exact segmentation and low-dimensional representation of individual ECG beat segments. Hermite and sigmoidal functions enable reliable extraction of important ECG waveform information while the piecewise polynomial interpolation captures noisy signal features like the baseline wander (BLW). For that we use variable projection, which allows the separation of linear and nonlinear morphological variations of the according ECG waveforms. The resulting ECG model simultaneously performs BLW cancellation, beat segmentation, and low-dimensional waveform representation. Results: We demonstrate its BLW denoising and segmentation performance in two experiments, using synthetic and real data. Compared to state-of-the-art algorithms, the experiments showed less diagnostic distortion in case of denoising and a more robust delineation for the P and T wave. Conclusion: This work suggests a novel concept for ECG beat representation, easily adaptable to other biomedical signals with similar shape characteristics, such as blood pressure and evoked potentials. Significance: Our method is able to capture linear and nonlinear wave shape changes. Therefore, it provides a novel methodology to understand the origin of morphological variations caused, for instance, by respiration, medication, and abnormalities

    Growth curves of common factors in psychotherapy: Multilevel growth modelling and outcome analysis.

    OBJECTIVE A large body of literature discusses change mechanisms underlying psychotherapy with an emphasis on common factors. The present study examined how different comprehensive common factors change over the course of therapy and whether this change was associated with clinical outcome at discharge. METHOD Three hundred forty-eight adults (mean age = 32.1, SD = 10.6; 64% female) attended a standardized 14-week day-clinic psychotherapy program. They provided longitudinal data on common factors based on weekly assessments. Additionally, pre- and post-assessment questionnaires on clinical outcome were completed. Using multilevel modelling, we predicted common factors by time (week in therapy). Multiple linear regression models tested the association between changes in common factors and clinical outcome. RESULTS The common factor 'Therapeutic Alliance' was best fitted by linear growth models, whereas models for the common factors 'Coping', 'Cognitive Integration' and 'Affective Processing' indicated logarithmic changes over time. 'Coping', that is change in patients' ability to cope with their individual problems, was most closely linked with outcome. CONCLUSIONS The present study provides evidence for the changeability of common factors over the course of therapy as well as their specific contributions to psychotherapeutic progress

    Propagación vegetativa del ciprés de la cordillera, una especie vulnerable del bosque subantártico de Sudamérica

    Increasing risks of loosing forest genetic resources and the need for a sustainable quality wood supply make focusing research efforts on undomesticated tree species necessary. The study of their genetic variation in vegetative propagation ability and the development of practical methodologies to obtain genetic copies are essential tools for conservation and breeding programs. patagonian cypress Austrocedrus chilensis is a vulnerable conifer native to the subantarctic forest of South America, with high ecological importance and economical potential. Its genetic diversity, mostly sheltered within unprotected populations, is seriously threatened. This work examined the ability of different genotypes of A. chilensis from xeric, mesic and humid populations to propagate asexually by stem rooting and scion grafting. The influence of exogenous auxins, season of cutting collection, ontogenetic stage of the donor plants, grafting season, and type of scions, was analyzed. Stem rooting ability was found to be poor both for adult (average = 0.27%) and juvenile ortets (average = 2.10%). Only one treatment, a juvenile progeny from a xeric provenance, showed remarkable results with 33.33% of rooting capacity. Grafting showed good results in early spring experiment using vigorous semi-hardwood scions, with an average of 80.95% of successful grafts. Compatibility between genotypes from different provenances used as scion and rootstock was found to be wide. These results indicate that although A. chilensis is a difficult-to-root species, its vegetative propagation by means of scion grafting is feasible using low cost technologyLos crecientes riesgos de pérdida de recursos genéticos forestales y la necesidad de una producción sostenible de madera de calidad hacen necesario orientar la investigación hacia especies arbóreas nativas no domesticadas. Para rescatar la diversidad genética amenazada y como una importante herramienta para el mejoramiento genético, resulta necesario estudiar la capacidad de las especies para propagarse vegetativamente, así como desarrollar técnicas para obtener copias genéticas. El ciprés de la cordillera (Austrocedrus chilensis) es una conífera vulnerable del bosque subantártico de Sudamérica, de gran importancia ecológica y potencial económico. Su diversidad genética se encuentra seriamente amenazada. En este trabajo se examinó la capacidad de diferentes genotipos de poblaciones xéricas, mésicas y húmedas de A. chilensis, para propagarse asexualmente por enraizado de estacas y por injertos. Se analizó además la influencia de auxinas exógenas, de la estación de colecta, del estadio ontogénico de las plantas donantes, de la estación de injerto y del tipo de púa. La capacidad de enraizado fue muy pobre, tanto para ortets adultos (promedio = 0,27%) como para juveniles (promedio = 2,10%). Sólo una progenie juvenil de procedencia xérica mostró resultados remarcables, con 33% de enraizado. Los injertos mostraron buenos resultados a comienzos de primavera usando esquejes vigorosos y semileñosos, con un 80,95% de prendimiento. La compatibilidad entre genotipos de diferentes procedencias usados como púa y portainjertos fue amplia.     Percutaneous coronary interventions in Europe 1992-2001

    Aims The purpose of this registry is to collect data on trends in interventional cardiology within Europe. Special interest focuses on relative increases and ratios in newer re-vascularisation approaches and its distribution in different regions in Europe. We report the data of the year 2001 and give an overview of the development of coronary interventions since 1992, when the first data collection was performed. Methods and Results Questionnaires were distributed to delegates of the individual national societies of cardiology represented in the European Society of Cardiology. These were completed by the local institutions and operators and showed that 1,806,238 angiograms and 617,176 percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasties (PTCAs) were performed in 2001. This is an increase of 10% and 17%, respectively, compared with the year 2000. The population-adjusted PTCA rate rose from nearly 800 procedures per 106 inhabitants in the year 2000 to approximately 990 procedures per 106 inhabitants in 2001. Coronary stenting increased by 25% to about 488,900 stents implanted in 2001. Complication rates remained unchanged, and the need for emergency coronary artery bypass grafting is still at 0.2% per percutaneous intervention. Conclusion Interventional cardiology in Europe is still expanding, mainly due to rapid growth in countries with lower socio-economical levels. Most central European countries reported only minor increases in procedures performed. Coronary stenting remains the only noteworthy adjunctive strategy to balloon angioplast
