Bronchoalveolar lavage study in victims of toxic gas leak at Bhopal
Bronchoalveolar lavage using flexible fibreoptic bronchoscope was carried out in 50 patients
1-2½ yr after exposure to the ‘toxic gas’ at Bhopal. Thirty six patients in the analysis were
categorised into 3 groups (viz., mild, moderate and severe), depending upon the severity of
exposure. There was an increase in cellularity in the lower respiratory tract (alveolitis) of
the severely exposed patients (in both smokers and non-smokers), compared to normals
(P< 0.05). The increase in cellularity in severely exposed non-smokers was due to abnormal
accumulation of macrophages (P<0.01), and in severely exposed smokers, to macrophages
(P<0.01) and neutrophils (P<0.05). Mild and moderately exposed patients did not show
significant change in cellularity in lower respiratory tract, compared to normal individuals
(P>0.2). There was a trend towards increasing cellularity, as the severity increased
(P < 0.0001) and higher numbers of total cells were seen in severely exposed smokers, suggesting
that smoking is a risk factor. It appears, therefore, that subjects severely exposed to
the toxic gas at Bhopal may have a subclinical alveolitis characterised by accumulation
and possibly activation of macrophages in the lower respiratory tract. Smokers, who

Fast Algorithms For Josephson Junction Arrays : Bus--bars and Defects
We critically review the fast algorithms for the numerical study of
two--dimensional Josephson junction arrays and develop the analogy of such
systems with electrostatics. We extend these procedures to arrays with
bus--bars and defects in the form of missing bonds. The role of boundaries and
of the guage choice in determing the Green's function of the system is
clarified. The extension of the Green's function approach to other situations

Dephasing Times in a Non-degenerate Two-Dimensional Electron Gas
Studies of weak localization by scattering from vapor atoms for electrons on
a liquid helium surface are reported. There are three contributions to the
dephasing time. Dephasing by the motion of vapor atoms perpendicular to the
surface is studied by varying the holding field to change the characteristic
width of the electron layer at the surface. A change in vapor density alters
the quasi-elastic scattering length and the dephasing due to the motion of
atoms both perpendicular and parallel to the surface. Dephasing due to the
electron-electron interaction is dependent on the electron density.Comment: 4 pages, Revte
Low-Temperature Mobility of Surface Electrons and Ripplon-Phonon Interaction in Liquid Helium
The low-temperature dc mobility of the two-dimensional electron system
localized above the surface of superfluid helium is determined by the slowest
stage of the longitudinal momentum transfer to the bulk liquid, namely, by the
interaction of surface and volume excitations of liquid helium, which rapidly
decreases with temperature. Thus, the temperature dependence of the
low-frequency mobility is \mu_{dc} = 8.4x10^{-11}n_e T^{-20/3} cm^4 K^{20/3}/(V
s), where n_e is the surface electron density. The relation
T^{20/3}E_\perp^{-3} << 2x10^{-7} between the pressing electric field (in
kV/cm) and temperature (in K) and the value \omega < 10^8 T^5 K^{-5}s^{-1} of
the driving-field frequency have been obtained, at which the above effect can
be observed. In particular, E_\perp = 1 kV/cm corresponds to T < 70 mK and

Psycho-Social Behavioural Problems In Urban Primary School Children
Research Problem: What is the magnitude and correlates of psychosocial behavioural problems in primary school children of an urban area. Objectives: i) To know the prevalence of psychosocial behavioural problems in primary school children of Agra Corporation. ii) To see the impact of various biosocial factors on the prevalence of above problems. Design: Cross sectional study by questionnaire method and observation. Setting: Primary schools run by Agra Corporation. Participants: All the children studying in 7 primary schools selected from 108 schools run by Agra Corporation. Sample Size: 520 primary school children. Study Variables: Age, sex, socio-economic class and family size. Statistical Analysis: By percentage, Z - test and Chi-square test. Result: A majority of the study children (63.7%) were having some psychosocial behavioural problem or the other, the most common problem being educational difficulties (59.8%), The average number of problems per child was 2.9. The prevalence was highest in children from middle-sized families of low socioÂeconomic class and in age group above 13 years
Observation of Crossover from Ballistic to Diffusion Regime for Excimer Molecules in Superfluid He
We have measured the temperature dependence of the time of flight of helium
excimer molecules He2* in superfluid 4He and find that the molecules behave
ballistically below 100mK and exhibit Brownian motion above 200 mK. In the
intermediate temperature range the transport cannot be described by either of

Parametric generation of second sound in superfluid helium: linear stability and nonlinear dynamics
We report the experimental studies of a parametric excitation of a second
sound (SS) by a first sound (FS) in a superfluid helium in a resonance cavity.
The results on several topics in this system are presented: (i) The linear
properties of the instability, namely, the threshold, its temperature and
geometrical dependencies, and the spectra of SS just above the onset were
measured. They were found to be in a good quantitative agreement with the
theory. (ii) It was shown that the mechanism of SS amplitude saturation is due
to the nonlinear attenuation of SS via three wave interactions between the SS
waves. Strong low frequency amplitude fluctuations of SS above the threshold
were observed. The spectra of these fluctuations had a universal shape with
exponentially decaying tails. Furthermore, the spectral width grew continuously
with the FS amplitude. The role of three and four wave interactions are
discussed with respect to the nonlinear SS behavior. The first evidence of
Gaussian statistics of the wave amplitudes for the parametrically generated
wave ensemble was obtained. (iii) The experiments on simultaneous pumping of
the FS and independent SS waves revealed new effects. Below the instability
threshold, the SS phase conjugation as a result of three-wave interactions
between the FS and SS waves was observed. Above the threshold two new effects
were found: a giant amplification of the SS wave intensity and strong resonance
oscillations of the SS wave amplitude as a function of the FS amplitude.

Magneto-shear modes and a.c. dissipation in a two-dimensional Wigner crystal
The a.c. response of an unpinned and finite 2D Wigner crystal to electric
fields at an angular frequency has been calculated in the dissipative
limit, , where is the scattering rate. For
electrons screened by parallel electrodes, in zero magnetic field the
long-wavelength excitations are a diffusive longitudinal transmission line mode
and a diffusive shear mode. A magnetic field couples these modes together to
form two new magneto-shear modes. The dimensionless coupling parameter where and are the
speeds of transverse and longitudinal sound in the collisionless limit and
and are the tensor components of the
magnetoconductivity. For , both the coupled modes contribute
to the response of 2D electrons in a Corbino disk measurement of
magnetoconductivity. For , the electron crystal rotates rigidly in
a magnetic field. In general, both the amplitude and phase of the measured a.c.
currents are changed by the shear modulus. In principle, both the

Development and Validation of a Novel Laboratory-Specific Correction Equation for Total Serum Calcium and Its Association With Mortality Among Hemodialysis Patients.
Conventional albumin-corrected calcium is inaccurate in predicting ionized calcium, and hidden hypercalcemia, characterized as high ionized calcium with normal total calcium, is associated with higher mortality in hemodialysis patients. By using a national cohort of hemodialysis patients in the Unites States, a novel laboratory-specific prediction equation composed of total calcium, albumin, and phosphorus was derived from 242 patients in the South Atlantic division (adjusted R2  = 0.80 versus 0.71 for the conventional equation) and then validated among 566 patients in the other divisions (adjusted R2  = 0.79 versus 0.68 for the conventional equation). Compared with the conventional equation, the novel equation showed a greater correlation with intact parathyroid hormone. Its relative performance against the conventional equation was consistent across subgroups based on medications related to calcium metabolism. The novel equation also had a higher sensitivity (57% versus 34%) and an equivalent specificity (99% versus 100%) against ionized hypercalcemia at a cut-off value of 10.2 mg/dL. Sensitivity and specificity at 9.4 mg/dL was 94% and 76% (versus 87% and 82% for the conventional equation), respectively. A survival analysis in 87,779 incident hemodialysis patients showed that among patients who were categorized as having a high-normal calcium status (ie, >9.4 to 10.2 mg/dL) by the conventional equation, there appeared a trend toward higher adjusted mortality risk across higher calcium status defined according to the novel equation. Meanwhile, the mortality risk was consistent across calcium strata defined according to the conventional equation within the categories defined by the novel equation. In conclusion, in comparison to the conventional equation, a novel laboratory-specific correction equation derived for correction of total calcium performs significantly better in ascertaining hidden hypercalcemia in hemodialysis patients, and aids in identifying patients at higher risk for mortality. © 2016 American Society for Bone and Mineral Research
