    The dependence of health insurance availability on years left before Medicare

    We study the dependence of health insurance availability of near-elderly inpatients in the United States with respect to their ages. We show that the likelihood that near-elderly inpatients are uninsured continuously declines until the early ages of 60 but the trend is reversed for the last few years preceding Medicare coverage. In addition, compared to those covered by Medicaid or private insurance, the uninsured patients are more likely to be admitted into hospitals as emergency cases.Health insurance; Medicare

    Investigation of External Factors for Wireless Capacitive Power Transfer Systems

    Capacitive power transfer (CPT) technology has gained more and more importance in recent years. This paper investigates the effects of temperature and relative humidity on CPT system performance. The conventional four-plate horizontal and vertical coupler structures are built to observe the variations of coupling capacitances under external factors. The pressure of the coupler ambient is kept constant, and the effects of temperature and relative humidity are reviewed separately. The different temperature (25 - 105 °C) and relative humidity (43 - 80% RH) levels are reviewed in these scenarios. The obtained results indicate that the values of coupling capacitances are inversely proportional to the temperature level, whereas the values of coupling capacitances are directly proportional to the relative humidity level. In addition, the visible changes happen in coupling capacitances after 45 °C and 55 °C for horizontally and vertically arranged four-plate coupler structures, respectively. It is also observed that relative humidity level becomes a critical point after 60% RH for both coupler structures. Among the coupling capacitances, the main capacitances are the most affected during the variations for both couplers. This study is expected to be a reference for the researchers on external factors in CPT systems

    Cheap Talk Games with Two-Senders and Different Modes of Communication

    We present a theoretical and experimental study of three Cheap Talk games, each having two senders and one receiver. The communication of senders is simultaneous in the first game, sequential in the second game and determined by the receiver in the third game (the Choice Game). We find that the overcommunication phenomenon observed in similar settings with only one sender becomes insignificant in our two-sender model regardless of the mode of communication. Despite similar theoretical predictions for these games, we observe systematic differences in experiments. In particular, while non-conflicting messages are observed less frequently under sequential communication due to the tendency of the second sender to revert the message of the first sender, the frequency of the second sender being truthful when the first sender lies is considerably higher in the Sequential Game in comparison to the truth-telling level in the Simultaneous Game. Moreover, in the Choice Game receiver prefers simultaneous mode of communication slightly more often than the sequential one. We explain the observed behavior of the players, estimating a logit quantal response equilibrium model and additionally running some logistic regressions. We find that the mode of communication is critical in design problems where a second opinion is available

    Highly doped silicon micromachined photonic crystals

    New layer-by-layer photonic crystals were fabricated using standard semiconductor micromachining techniques. Because resistivity of a silicon wafer decreases with the doping concentration, the authors predicted that due to the low resistivity of layers, this structure will show metallic photonic crystal properties, exhibiting a metallicity gap with an upper band edge around 100 GHz, with the new dimensions

    Microfluidics for reconfigurable electromagnetic metamaterials

    We propose microfluidics as a useful platform for reconfigurable electromagnetic metamaterials. Microfluidic split-ring resonators (MF-SRRs) are fabricated inside a flexible elastomeric material by employing rapid prototyping. The transmission measurements performed for mercury-injected MF-SRR exhibits sharp magnetic resonances at microwave wavelengths. We further calculate transmission properties of the MF-SRR array and the effect of electrical conductivity of the liquid inside the channel on the magnetic resonance. The measured results agree well with numerical calculations. Our proposal may open up directions toward switchable metamaterials and reconfigurable devices such as filters, switches, and resonators. © 2009 American Institute of Physics

    Highly directional resonant antennas built around photonic crystals

    A monopole resonant antenna with a very high directivity and gain was fabricated based on a layer-by-layer dielectric photonic crystal having a 3D band gap with mid-gap frequency around 12 GHz. The radiation patterns of the antenna, inserted into the planar defect structures built around a 20-layer photonic crystal, was investigated by H-plane measurements and finite difference time domain simulations. When the antenna was inserted in the cavity, the resonance frequency in the reflection dropped sharply from -5 to -35 dB, indicating that most of the power is radiated out in the presence of the cavity. Assuming negligible absorption, the maximum gain has a value around 300
