The analysis of interlocking directors via hypergraphs

    Get PDF
Since the dawn of the modern era, the associations that link companies together in the gathering and control networks have been interconnected. At the level of corporate governance, companies are linked by common stock directors, joint shareholders and joint directors (interlocking directors). Although often depicted as atomic, individual, unconnected market actors are actually embedded in such networks. In this study, we examine the network characteristics of interlocking directors of Turkish firms listed in ISO 500 and Borsa Istanbul Stock Exchange. To capture the higher order relations, we use hypergraphs to model interlocking directors and their relations. By introducing a simple graph representation based on the connectedness of agents in a hyper-network, we also give the community structure that is a cluster of densely connected nodes. The results we obtain in this study indicate that companies of Turkish market operating in global scale have central positions in their interlocking director network.Publisher's Versio

The Cyprus question : latest developments and scenarios

Cataloged from PDF version of article. This thesis evaluates the latest developments on the island while focusing on the reasons of why a solution has not been founded on the island up to now. For the Greek Cypriot Side the objective is, including the whole territory of the island, to establish a sovereign Hellenic Republic in which the Turkish Cypriots are in minority status. In order to achieve this objective, they have pursued different strategies through different period of times and tried to use the EU and the UN through their own benefits. As a consequence of this strategy, the Turkish Cypriot side had been seen as an reluctant side in reaching an agreement in international area until the time at which the Annan Plan was put into referendum. In fact, the objective of Turkish side is no more than to come to an agreement providing the equal status that the 1960 treaties envisaged. The Annan Plan is far away from providing this solution, because it is an incomplete draft similar to previous ones. The reason behind the rejection of the Annan Plan by the Greek side in the referendum is the belief that they will be able to obtain more than it by their recognized position as an legitimate government of Cyprus and the EU membership. Unless the international community accepts the equality of the Turkish Cypriots, it would be very difficult to reach a consensus on the island. The future of the island will depend on not only the manner of both sides but also the third partiesBalcı, MehmetM.S

Aim: This study aimed to compare the efficacy of lower extremity wrapping with elastic bandages in conjunction with leg elevation to leg elevation alone in terms of maternal systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure, heart rate, and SaO2 in term mothers undergoing elective cesarean section (CS) with spinal anesthesia. Material and Methods: A series of 62 term mothers aged between 20 and 45 years who were scheduled for elective CS under spinal anesthesia were enrolled in the study. Using sealed envelopes, participants were allocated to one of two study groups: the wrapping group (n=30) or the control group (n=32). All subjects received volume administration of lactated Ringer's solution of 10 mL/kg over the 15 min prior to the administration of the spinal block. Subjects allocated to the wrapping group received lower extremity wrapping with 10-cm Esmarch elastic bandages applied from the ankle to the mid-thigh immediately before the administration of the subarachnoid block. Following intrathecal injection, lower limbs were elevated 20 degrees in subjects allocated to the wrapping group by tilting the foot-end of the operating table. Systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure, heart rate, and SaO2 were monitored intraoperatively. Results: Systolic, diastolic, and mean blood pressures were significantly higher in the wrapping group compared to the control subjects beginning from the 2nd minute of the intrathecal injection to the 20th-30th minute of the intrathecal injection. The median ephedrine dose was significantly higher in the control group than the wrapping group [15 (0-40) mg vs. 5 (0-30) mg, p=0.007]. Vomiting was also more frequent in control subjects compared to those receiving lower extremity wrapping and leg elevation (18% vs. 0%, p=0.024). Discussion: Lower extremity wrapping in combination with leg elevation provides a better hemodynamic profile than volume administration alone in subjects undergoing elective CS under spinal anesthesia. Subjects receiving lower extremity wrapping and leg elevation require less vasopressors and experience less vomiting compared to subjects receiving only volume administration

Purpose. In this study, our purpose was to investigate the diagnostic efficacy of the dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method in the patients with bile duct obstruction. Materials and Methods. 108 consecutive patients (53 men, 55 women, mean age; 55.77 ± 14.62, range 18–86 years) were included in this study. All the patients underwent conventional upper abdomen MRI using intravenous contrast material (Gd-DTPA) and MRCP in 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner. MRCP images were evaluated together with the T1 and T2w images, and both biliary ducts and surrounding tissues were examined for possible pathologies that may cause obstruction. Results. MRI/MRCP findings compared with final diagnoses, MRI/MRCP in the demonstration of bile duct obstruction sensitivity 96%, the specificity 100%, and accuracy 96.3%, in the detection of presence and level of obstruction, the sensitivity 96.7%, specificity 100%, and accuracy 97.2%, in the diagnosis of choledocholithiasis, the sensitivity 82.3%, specificity 96%, and accuracy 91.7%, and in the determination of the character of the stenosis, sensitivity 95.6%, specificity 91.3%, and accuracy 94.5% were found. Conclusion. The combination of dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI and MRCP techniques in patients with suspected biliary obstruction gives the detailed information about the presence of obstruction, location, and causes and is a highly specific and sensitive method

Leishmaniasis is a reticuloendothelial system disease that mostly observed before the age of 5. Visceral infection causes long-standing fever, weight loss, weakness, pancytopenia, and hepatosplenomegaly. Leishmania infantum is responsible for visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Turkey. We present a case of hemophagocytic syndrome due to Leishmania infection diagnosed with an immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT). Leishmania amastigotes were not observed on bone marrow aspiration. We consider that IFAT is very important for parasite detection in the diagnosis of VL in children, particularly when amastigotes are not obtained on bone marrow aspiration

AbstractIntroductionAdrenal haemorrhage is a relatively rare condition. If there is not a specific ethology describing adrenal hematoma, then, this is termed as ‘idiopathic adrenal hematoma’.Presentation of caseWe presented a case of idiopathic adrenal hematoma in this study. A 62-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for evaluation of a 40mm mass in the left upper abdominal cavity. The histopathological findings of the surgical specimen revealed a hematoma with normal adrenal tissue.DiscussionThe incidence of adrenal haemorrhage was found to be 1.1% regarding autopsy results. The Adrenal gland is highly vascular and vulnerable to haemorrhage. Before a surgical operation, it is difficult to diagnose idiopathic adrenal hematomas.ConclusionAn adrenal hematoma should be kept in mind when adrenal masses assessing

    Get PDF
Objective:To evaluate overactive bladder (OAB) in male and female patients with moderate or severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and to investigate the impact of three months of continuous positive airwMethods:Twenty-eight female and 45 male patients with moderate and severe OSAS whose obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity was evaluated according to the apnea–hypopnea index were included in the study. Patients’ voiding symptoms were evaluated using the validated Turkish translations of overactive bladder symptom scores (OAB-V8) and the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Short-Form (ICIQ-SF) at OSAS diagnosis and at 3-months after the CPAP therapy. Results:Patients with moderate and severe OSAS were more likely to have OAB than the average population, and CPAP therapy improved the symptoms of OAB in both male and female patients. In addition, a positive association was observed between OSA severity and OAB-V8 and ICIQ-SF in female patients and between OSA severity and OAB-V8 in male patients. Conclusion:Our findings suggest that CPAP therapy improves the clinical symptoms of OAB. Thus, unnecessary medical or interventional treatment of OAB can be avoided in such patients

Objective: We aimed to compare the effects of placenta previa (PP) and placenta accreta (PA) on the short-term maternal morbidity alone and together. Methods: The data of the patients who were diagnosed with PP, PA or placenta previa accreta (PPA) which includes both of them between January 2010 and December 2018 in a tertiary reference center were analyzed retrospectively. The records of the patients were compared between 3 groups for age, gravida, parity, week of gestation, previous cesarean section, history of curettage and myomectomy, gestational complications, placental location, hospitalization at hospital and intensive care unit, decreased level of hemoglobin, blood product transfusions, procedures to control bleeding and complications. Results: Six out of 192 patients were excluded from the study as they delivered in other hospitals, and the data of 186 patients were analyzed. There were 141 (75.8%) patients with PP only, 9 (4.8%) patients with PA only, and 36 (19.4%) patients with PPA. The erythrocyte transfusion was significantly higher in PPA patients than PP patients (p<0.001). The possibility for the transfusion of any blood product was lower in PP group than other groups. While the rate of hospitalization at intensive care unit was higher in PPA group, the number of hospitalization day at hospital was significantly lower in PP group than PA (p=0.042) and PPA (p<0.001) groups. Urinary complication was observed less in PP patients. The hysterectomy rate was higher in PPA patients with than PP and PA patients (p=0.004). Conclusion: The rates of maternal morbidity and hysterectomy increase when PP and PA are together compared to the cases where they are alone
