    When I am sixty-four… evaluating language markers of well-being in healthy aging narratives

    Natural language use is a promising candidate for the development of innovative measures of well-being to complement self-report measures. The type of words individuals use can reveal important psychological processes that underlie well-being across the lifespan. In this preregistered, cross-sectional study, we propose a conceptual model of language markers of well-being and use written narratives about healthy aging (N = 701) and computerized text analysis (LIWC) to empirically validate the model. As hypothesized, we identified a model with three groups of language markers (reflecting affective, evaluative, and social processes). Initial validation with established self-report scales (N = 30 subscales) showed that these language markers reliably predict core components of well-being and underlying processes. Our results support the concurrent validity of the conceptual language model and allude to the added benefits of language-based measures, which are thought to reflect less conscious processes of well-being. Future research is needed to continue validating language markers of well-being across the lifespan in a theoretically informed and contextualized way, which will lay the foundation for inferring people’s well-being from their natural language use

    Numerical investigation on the use of Dimethyl Ether (DME) as an alternative fuel for compression-ignition engines

    Dimethyl Ether (DME) is an oxygenated fuel that could favour the transition of the heavy-duty transportation sector to carbon neutrality thanks to its similarities in terms of thermophysical properties with diesel fuel, which will facilitate the retrofitting of existing architectures, and the possibility to achieve good trade-offs between NOx emissions, soot formation and overall combustion efficiency. The possibility of producing it from a multitude of carbon-neutral sources and the low hydrogen-to-carbon ratio would allow for an overall lower CO2 output, making an attractive option in limiting the global warming impact of the heavy-duty transportation sector. In the present work, a numerical analysis of the combustion process of DME is carried out. First, the numerical setup is validated against experimental data available for a constant volume vessel with an initial density of 14.8 kg/m3, discussing the capabilities of a chemistry-based combustion model using tabulated kinetics of homogeneous reactors: the Tabulated Well Mixed (TWM) model. Ignition delay times (IDT) are compared for a wide range of temperatures, from 750 K to 1100 K, and oxygen concentrations, from 15% to 21%. The same setup is then applied in the simulation of a heavy-duty internal combustion engine (ICE). A first validation was done to assess the performance of the numerical methodology in a traditional Mixing Controlled Compression Ignition (MCCI) scenario. Then, two other points were simulated: an MCCI condition with 35% of EGR and a Late-Premixed Charge Compression Ignition (L-PCCI) one, with 35% of EGR and an SOIe of 4 CAD aTDC. Local temperature distributions were compared, analyzing the effect of these technologies in NOx emission mitigation and their impact on gross indicated efficiency (& eta;g), showing the advantages that using DME can have on a real-world application

    Early Linguistic Markers of Trauma-Specific Processing Predict Post-trauma Adjustment

    Identifying early predictors for psychiatric disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), is crucial for effective treatment and prevention efforts. Obtaining such predictors is challenging and methodologically limited, for example by individuals' distress, arousal, and reduced introspective ability. We investigated the predictive power of language-based, implicit markers of psychological processes (N = 163) derived from computerized text-analysis of trauma and control narratives provided within 18 days post-trauma. Trauma narratives with fewer cognitive processing words (indicating less cognitive elaboration), more death-related words (indicating perceived threat to life), and more first-person singular pronouns (indicating self-immersed processing) predicted greater PTSD symptoms at 6 months. These effects were specific to trauma narratives and held after controlling for early PTSD symptom severity and verbal intelligence. When self-report questionnaires of related processes were considered together with the trauma narrative linguistic predictors, use of more first-person singular pronouns remained a significant predictor alongside self-reported mental defeat. Language-based processing markers may complement questionnaire measures in early forecasting of post-trauma adjustment

    Holocene environmental changes in the fuegian forest and steppe, Argentina

    Environmental changes were reconstructed from a multiproxy synthesis of over 30 localities from the Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego and Isla de los Estados, southernmost South America. At a local scale, the results from the mountain forest and gently undulating steppe areas were integrated as well as those from the marine environments of the Beagle Channel and the Atlantic coasts. At a regional scale, the results were integrated with those published for the southernmost Andean and Extra-Andean Patagonia and the Antarctic Peninsula. This study focuses on the environmental evolution during the Late Glacial-Holocene transition, the Middle to Late Holocenetransgressive-regressive hemicycle and wet-dry oscillations, the Medieval Climate Anomaly, the Little Ice Age, the tephra inputs from the Patagonian Andes, and the recent climatic warming. Most paleoenvironmental changes are related to variations in the latitudinal position and intensity of the Southern Westerly Winds (SWW) while others are associated with astronomical or endogenous forcings. At a strong intensity of the SWW, a greater contribution of humidity to the forest areas and an increase in the rainfall gradient create windy and arid conditions in the steppe. At a weak intensity of the SWW, lower humidity input in the forest areas and the advection of air masses from the Atlantic Ocean promoted humid and slightly windy conditions in the steppe.Similar environmental trends are observed between terrestrial and marine environments in the center and south of Tierra del Fuego, Isla de los Estados and the Antarctic Peninsula, and between the Fuegian steppe and Extra- Andean Patagonia.     Assessing land use and flood management impacts on ecosystem services in a river landscape (Upper Danube, Germany)

    Rivers and floodplains provide many regulating, provisioning and cultural ecosystem services (ES) such as flood risk regulation, crop production or recreation. Intensive use of resources such as hydropower production, construction of detention basins and intensive agriculture substantially change ecosystems and may affect their capacity to provide ES. Legal frameworks such as the European Water Framework Directive, Bird and Habitats Directive and Floods Directive already address various uses and interests. However, management is still sectoral and often potential synergies or trade‐offs between sectors are not considered. The ES concept could support a joint and holistic evaluation of impacts and proactively suggest advantageous options. The river ecosystem service index (RESI) method evaluates the capacity of floodplains to provide ES by using a standardized five‐point scale for 1 km‐floodplain segments based on available spatial data. This scaling allows consistent scoring of all ES and their integration into a single index. The aim of this article is to assess ES impacts of different flood prevention scenarios on a 75 km section of the Danube river corridor in Germany. The RESI method was applied to evaluate scenario effects on 13 ES with the standardized five‐point scale. Synergies and trade‐offs were identified as well as ES bundles and dependencies on land use and connectivity. The ratio of actual and former floodplain has the strongest influence on the total ES provision: the higher the percentage and area of an active floodplain, the higher the sum of ES.     Neuroscience and education: prime time to build the bridge

    As neuroscience gains social traction and entices media attention, the notion that education has much to benefit from brain research becomes increasingly popular. However, it has been argued that the fundamental bridge toward education is cognitive psychology, not neuroscience. We discuss four specific cases in which neuroscience synergizes with other disciplines to serve education, ranging from very general physiological aspects of human learning such as nutrition, exercise and sleep, to brain architectures that shape the way we acquire language and reading, and neuroscience tools that increasingly allow the early detection of cognitive deficits, especially in preverbal infants. Neuroscience methods, tools and theoretical frameworks have broadened our understanding of the mind in a way that is highly relevant to educational practice.     Expressive Writing as a Coping-Tool. A State of the Art Review This article provides a state of the art review on the research on Expressive Writing (EW). In the paradigm originally developed by Pennebaker, participants write about a traumatic experience or a neutral topic on 3–4 days for 15–20 minutes. A large number of studies has now documented the positive effects of EW on physical and mental health. It has been shown that in the months after the study, participants who write about a traumatic experience go to the doctor less often, show improved immune function, report fewer symptoms, are less depressed and anxious and have generally a higher well-being as compared to the control group. Three major models have been proposed to explain the effects of EW. The initial studies assumed that a disclosure induced physiological disinhibition was responsible for its effects. Current research focuses on linguistic and cognitive processes according to which EW fosters the development of a coherent narrative about the events that then can be stored more efficiently and be forgotten more easily. According to the most recent model, EW facilitates social processes that enable individuals to approach others more actively and become better integrated into their social network. Other approaches focus on habituation processes as potential mediators. The different models can be integrated in an emotion regulation model. Finally, potentials of the paradigm in the real world are discussed and show how EW can be used for personal, educational and therapeutic purposes

    Towards a lumped approach for solid plastic waste gasification: Polyethylene and polypropylene pyrolysis

    : In a circular economy perspective, solid plastic wastes (SPW) can become a valuable source of chemicals, energy vectors and fuels through pyrolysis, gasification, and partial oxidation technologies, but their modelling requires first the definition of suitable condensed phase pyrolysis mechanisms for each constituent. This work proposes a semi-detailed kinetic model for polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) pyrolysis based on the functional group approach implemented for polyvinylchloride (PVC) and biomass pyrolysis to consistently address mixture modelling. This approach distinguishes polymeric chains in High Molecular Weight species, represented through their chemical functionalities, and Low Molecular Weight species, described with accuracy comparable to literature detailed models, employing the reaction classes proposed in the scientific literature. Several validated lumping techniques are introduced to reduce the model computational cost, and the resulting liquid-phase model accounts for 74 species for PE and 126 species for PP. Model validation is carried out by an extensive comparison with experimental data proving the soundness of the approach and the model capability of predicting mass-loss and product distribution profiles with similar accuracy to more expensive detailed models from the literature. The proposed condensed phase approach can be extended to other polymers and coupled with other existing subsets in the CRECK kinetic framework (e.g., biomass, PVC) paving the way for unravelling mixture interactions and secondary cracking and/or gasification reactions. The model here proposed is a powerful tool to support design and optimization of SPW thermochemical recycling technologies

    (Not) Lost in Translation: Psychological Adaptation Occurs During Speech Translation

    While language style is considered to be automatic and relatively stable, its plasticity has not yet been studied in translations that require the translator to “step into the shoes of another person.” In the present study, we propose a psychological model of language adaptation in translations. Focusing on an established interindividual difference marker of language style, that is, gender, we examined whether translators assimilate to the original gendered style or implicitly project their own gendered language style. In a preregistered study, we investigated gender differences in language use in TED Talks ( N = 1,647) and their translations ( N = 544) in same- versus opposite-gender speaker/translator dyads. The results showed that translators assimilated to gendered language styles even when in mismatch to their own gender. This challenges predominating views on language style as fixed and fosters a more dynamic view of language style as also being shaped by social context
