String equations in Whitham hierarchies: tau-functions and Virasoro constraints
A scheme for solving Whitham hierarchies satisfying a special class of string
equations is presented. The tau-function of the corresponding solutions is
obtained and the differential expressions of the underlying Virasoro
constraints are characterized. Illustrative examples of exact solutions of
Whitham hierarchies are derived and applications to conformal maps dynamics are
indicated.Comment: 26 pages, 2 figure

From green to ripe: Dynamics of peacemaking in Colombia (1998-2016)
Armed conflict in Colombia with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC-EP) was only settled after 50 years and several attempts at negotiations. This sequence of events fits the pattern of "conflict ripeness" first proposed by William Zartman. But using a successful settlement as a way to determine ripeness can be tautological. To address this issue, we develop a formal model to identify the level of ripeness at which a conflict is settled. In an overripe conflict both parties end up spending resources in a military build-up that is out of proportion with what they obtain in the final settlement. We show that such overripeness is exacerbated by the access to resources and by the factional heterogeneity within the two sides. We illustrate these dynamics by looking in detail at the attempts at negotiation between Colombia's government and the FARC-EP. To that end, we combine statistical data, some previously undisclosed, and interviews with some key participants. This work was supported by Comunidad de Madrid and Complutense University of Madrid. Permanent deformation models for a granular material used in road pavements
[Abstract:] This paper analyses the permanent deformation performance of an unbound granular material that has been subjected to repeated triaxial loads. The study focuses on the evolution of the cumulative strain and includes a classification of the specimens according to the shakedown concept. This was done by fitting models that express the cumulative strain to cyclic loads and stress level. The predictions of the models were not absolutely perfect. The results with the granular material were not satisfactory enough to warrant their use in a low traffic road pavement section in Galicia (Spain)

Oxidative Stress Associated with Chilling Injury in Immature Fruit: Postharvest Technological and Biotechnological Solutions
Immature, vegetable-like fruits are produced by crops of great economic importance, including cucumbers, zucchini, eggplants and bell peppers, among others. Because of their high respiration rates, associated with high rates of dehydration and metabolism, and their susceptibility to chilling injury (CI), vegetable fruits are highly perishable commodities, requiring particular storage conditions to avoid postharvest losses. This review focuses on the oxidative stress that affects the postharvest quality of vegetable fruits under chilling storage. We define the physiological and biochemical factors that are associated with the oxidative stress and the development of CI symptoms in these commodities, and discuss the different physical, chemical and biotechnological approaches that have been proposed to reduce oxidative stress while enhancing the chilling tolerance of vegetable fruits
Sequencing and evaluation of the antimicrobial effect of lactic acid bacteria against strains of Salmonella Tiphymurium isolated from intensive and extensive pig production
The intensive and extensive production of pigs in Argentina and Spain, respectively, present different production factors. However, when dealing with pathogen threats, specifically Salmonella, both are affected by them. Salmonella is a common pathogen in food related to food outbreaks that cause serious problems in public health. Lactic acid bacteria, specifically the genera Lactobacillus and Pediococcus, have been characterized in the past few years for being of great importance as antagonists of different pathogenic bacteria. One control alternative is the application of Lactobacillus throughout the pig production chain, thus preventing the arrival of this pathogen to consumers. A preliminary assessment was made of the antagonistic capacity of lactic acid bacteria identified after sequencing as Lactobacillus plantarum and Pediococcus acidilactici against Salmonella Tiphymurium isolated from intensive pig production in Argentina, and Salmonella Tiphymurium isolated from extensive pig production in Spain. The results obtained showed the high antimicrobial capacity of the LAB selected against both pathogenic strains (93.75%). Thus, they can be proposed as potential biopreservative bacteria in the production of pig meat and its subproducts.Fil: Ruiz, María Julia. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas.
