A simple and general method to calculate the equilibrium heights of a liquid that penetrates spontaneously, due to capillarity, into a corrugated Hele-Shaw cell is presented. A cosine-like corrugation was imposed on each internal face of the plates that made the cell and periodic channels were generated. It were found complex equilibrium heights which allow to evaluate the volumes of absorbed liquid or expelled gas. Equilibrium heights were also evaluated in corrugated tilted cells

Villermaux & Pomeau (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 642, 2010, p. 147) analysed the motion of the interface of an inviscid liquid column released from rest in a vertical tube whose area expands gradually downwards, with application to an inverted conical container for which experimental measurements were carried out. An error in the analysis is found and corrected in the present investigation, which provides the new governing equation for the super-accelerated interface motion down gradually varying tubes in general, and integrated results for interface trajectories, velocities and accelerations down a conical tube in particular. Interestingly, the error does not affect any of the conclusions given in the 2010 paper. Further new results are reported here such as the equation governing the centre of mass and proof that the end point acceleration is exactly that of gravit

Study and Design of a Compact Parallel Coupled Microstrip Band-Pass Filter for a 5 GHz Unlicensed Mobile WiMAX Networks

In this paper, a compact parallel coupled microstrip band-pass filter (BPF) is used to design a wideband third order of the Tschebyshev elements for an unlicensed WiMAX technology. Some techniques based on the parametrical study are proposed to obtain the desired 10 % operating bandwidth filter response. The new filter is implemented on Arlon AR 1000 substrate having a relative permittivity of 10 and substrate thickness 1.1938 mm respectively. The results based on the transmission line theory approach and the commercial electromagnetic Agilent ADS and CST-MS simulators show a good agreement

Safe human-robot interaction based on dynamic sphere-swept line bounding volumes

    Get PDF
This paper presents a geometric representation for human operators and robotic manipulators, which cooperate in the development of flexible tasks. The main goal of this representation is the implementation of real-time proximity queries, which are used by safety strategies for avoiding dangerous collisions between humans and robotic manipulators. This representation is composed of a set of bounding volumes based on swept-sphere line primitives, which encapsulate their links more precisely than previous sphere-based models. The radius of each bounding volume does not only represent the size of the encapsulated link, but it also includes an estimation of its motion. The radii of these dynamic bounding volumes are obtained from an algorithm which computes the linear velocity of each link. This algorithm has been implemented for the development of a safety strategy in a real human–robot interaction task. This work is funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education and the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation through the projects DPI2005-06222 and DPI2008-02647 and the grant AP2005-1458

A Novel U-Shaped Tri-Band Antenna on High Permittivity Multilayer Substrate for Wireless Communications

    Get PDF
In this paper, a detailed study of a new proposed rectangular dielectric u-shaped tri-band antenna is presented. A meticulous study considering the high permittivity material effect is introduced and discussed. All the design procedures are performed by using CST MS software. Moreover, the modified shaped patch antenna by introducing a slot on the rectangular radiated patch, offers improved bandwidth and allows an important miniaturization in size. Note that the proposed antenna can be used for several wireless technologies, especially for the GSM, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, WLAN, WiMAX, all bands GPS frequencies, ISM band and ultra wide band applications. Detailed design steps, parametric studies and the simulation results for the proposed antenna are investigated under specific scenarios. Finally some concluding remarks will be drawn

Strategies Employed by Community-Based Service Providers to Address HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Challenges: A Qualitative Study

    Get PDF
Background: HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders and other causes of neurocognitive challenges experienced by people living with HIV (PLWH) persist as public health concerns in developed countries. Consequently, PLWH who experience neurocognitive challenges increasingly require social support and mental health services from community-based providers in the HIV sector. Methods: Thirty-three providers from 22 AIDS service organizations across Ontario, Canada, were interviewed to determine the strategies they used to support PLWH experiencing neurocognitive difficulties. Thematic analysis was conducted to determine key themes from the interview data. Results: Three types of strategies were identified: (a) intrapersonal, (b) interpersonal, and (c) organizational. Intrapersonal strategies involved learning and staying informed about causes of neurocognitive challenges. Interpersonal strategies included providing practical assistance, information, counseling, and/or referrals to PLWH. Organizational strategies included creating dedicated support groups for PLWH experiencing neurocognitive challenges, partnering with other organizations with services not available within their own organization, and advocating for greater access to services with expertise and experience working with PLWH. Conclusion: Through concerted efforts in the future, it is likely that empirically investigating, developing, and customizing these strategies specifically to address HIV-associated neurocognitive challenges will yield improved social support and mental health outcomes for PLWH
