Parallel strategies for Direct Multisearch

In DMS class, constraints are addressed with an extreme barrier approach, only evaluating feasible points. It has a well-supported convergence analysis and simple implementations present a good numerical performance, both in academic test sets and in real applications. Recently, this numerical performance was improved with the definition of a search step based on the minimization of quadratic polynomial models, corresponding to the algorithm BoostDMS. In this work, we propose and numerically evaluate strategies to improve the performance of BoostDMS, mainly through parallelization applied to the search and to the poll steps. The final parallelized version not only considerably decreases the computational time required for solving a multiobjective optimization problem, but also increases the quality of the computed approximation to the Pareto front. Extensive numerical results will be reported in an academic test set and in a chemical engineering application.preprintpublishe

Leucemia Linfoblástica Aguda com Descolamento Macular Seroso Bilateral
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is a malignant hematopoietic neoplasia, which is rare in adults. Although ocular fundus alterations may be commonly observed in the course of the disease, such alterations are rarely the presenting signs of the disease. Here we describe the case of a patient with painless and progressive loss of visual acuity (right eye, 2/10; left eye, 3/10) developing over two weeks, accompanied by fever and cervical lymphadenopathy. Fundus examination showed bilateral macular serous detachment, which was confirmed by optical coherence tomography. Fluorescein angiography revealed hyperfluorescent pinpoints in the posterior poles. The limits of the macular detachment were revealed in the late phase of the angiogram. The results of blood count analysis triggered a thorough, systematic patient examination. The diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia B (CD10+) was established, and intensive systemic chemotherapy was immediately initiated. One year after the diagnosis, the patient remains in complete remission without any ophthalmologic alterations.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Maximal Sharing in the Lambda Calculus with letrec
Increasing sharing in programs is desirable to compactify the code, and to
avoid duplication of reduction work at run-time, thereby speeding up execution.
We show how a maximal degree of sharing can be obtained for programs expressed
as terms in the lambda calculus with letrec. We introduce a notion of `maximal
compactness' for lambda-letrec-terms among all terms with the same infinite
unfolding. Instead of defined purely syntactically, this notion is based on a
graph semantics. lambda-letrec-terms are interpreted as first-order term graphs
so that unfolding equivalence between terms is preserved and reflected through
bisimilarity of the term graph interpretations. Compactness of the term graphs
can then be compared via functional bisimulation.
We describe practical and efficient methods for the following two problems:
transforming a lambda-letrec-term into a maximally compact form; and deciding
whether two lambda-letrec-terms are unfolding-equivalent. The transformation of
a lambda-letrec-term into maximally compact form proceeds in three
steps:
(i) translate L into its term graph ; (ii) compute the maximally
shared form of as its bisimulation collapse ; (iii) read back a
lambda-letrec-term from the term graph with the property . This guarantees that and have the same unfolding, and that
exhibits maximal sharing.
The procedure for deciding whether two given lambda-letrec-terms and
are unfolding-equivalent computes their term graph interpretations and , and checks whether these term graphs are bisimilar.
For illustration, we also provide a readily usable implementation.Comment: 18 pages, plus 19 pages appendi
X-ray Evidence of the Common Envelope Phase of V471 Tauri
Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrograph observations of the
pre-cataclysmic binary V471 Tau have been used to estimate the C/N abundance
ratio of the K dwarf component for the first time. While the white dwarf
component dominates the spectrum longward of 50 AA, at shorter wavelengths the
observed X-ray emission is entirely due to coronal emission from the K dwarf.
The H-like resonance lines of C and N yield an estimate of their logarithmic
abundance ratio relative to the Sun of [C/N]=-0.38+/-0.15 - half of the
currently accepted solar value. We interpret this result as the first clear
observational evidence for the presumed common envelope phase of this system,
during which the surface of the K dwarf was contaminated by CN-cycle processed
material dredged up into the red giant envelope. We use the measured C/N ratio
to deduce that 0.015-0.04 Msun was accreted by the K dwarf while engulfed, and
show that this is consistent with a recent tentative detection of 13C in the K
dwarf photosphere, and with the measured Li abundance in the scenario where the
red giant companion was Li-rich during the common envelope phase.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, ApJL accepte
