    Apophis planetary defense campaign

We describe results of a planetary defense exercise conducted during the close approach to Earth by the near-Earth asteroid (99942) Apophis during 2020 December–2021 March. The planetary defense community has been conducting observational campaigns since 2017 to test the operational readiness of the global planetary defense capabilities. These community-led global exercises were carried out with the support of NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office and the International Asteroid Warning Network. The Apophis campaign is the third in our series of planetary defense exercises. The goal of this campaign was to recover, track, and characterize Apophis as a potential impactor to exercise the planetary defense system including observations, hypothetical risk assessment and risk prediction, and hazard communication. Based on the campaign results, we present lessons learned about our ability to observe and model a potential impactor. Data products derived from astrometric observations were available for inclusion in our risk assessment model almost immediately, allowing real-time updates to the impact probability calculation and possible impact locations. An early NEOWISE diameter measurement provided a significant improvement in the uncertainty on the range of hypothetical impact outcomes. The availability of different characterization methods such as photometry, spectroscopy, and radar provided robustness to our ability to assess the potential impact risk

Spectral characterisation of 14 V-type candidate asteroids from the MOVIS catalogue

Most of the currently known basaltic (V-type) asteroids are believed to be past or present members of the Vesta dynamical family. The rising discoveries of V-type asteroids that are not linked to the Vesta family dynamically suggest that a number of major basaltic bodies may have been present during the early stages of the solar system. Using the near-infrared (NIR) colour data in the Moving Objects from VISTA Survey (MOVIS) catalogue, a list of 477 V-type candidates was compiled, with more than half of them outside the Vesta family. In this work, we aim to provide a spectral analysis of 14 V-type candidates of various dynamical types. The computed visible and NIR spectral parameters are used to investigate evidence of space-weathering or mineralogical differences from the expected basaltic composition. Based on the analysis of their visible spectra, we confirm 11 new V-type asteroids: six low-i asteroids – (3188) Jekabsons, (3331) Kvistaberg, (4693) Drummond, (7223) Dolgorukij, (9007) James Bond, and (29733) 1999 BA4; along with four inner-other asteroids – (5524) Lecacheux, (19983) 1990 DW, (51742) 2001 KE55, and (90023) 2003 BD13; as well as one fugitive – (2275) Cuitlahuac. Additionally, we analysed three peculiar outer main belt V-type candidates based on their visible + NIR spectra. We confirm the diogenite-like composition of (2452) Lyot. The spectrum of asteroid (7302) is not consistent with a basaltic composition and likely reflects an S-type body. The spectrum of (14390) 1990 QP10 is similar to a V-type but it shows unique spectral features that suggest a peculiar composition. Overall, our results demonstrate the efficiency of the MOVIS catalogue in identifying V-type objects, with a success rate of over 85%. The identification of V-types in the inner main-belt is more likely due to the presence of the Vesta family and other nearby asteroids that had escaped from the family. In the middle and outer main belt, where the amount of data is more limited, the proportion of false positives increases

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of 10 and 100 Hz peripheral electro-estimulation (electroacupuncture, EAc) at Zusanli (ST-36) and Zhongwan (CV-12) acupoints on blood glucose and lactate levels and tissue (liver and kidney) concentrations of lactate in hyperglycemic induced anesthetized rats. METHODS: Thirty-six rats were randomly assigned to 3 groups (n=12): G1: basal (anesthesia: ketamine (90mg kg-1 body weight)+ xylazine (10mg/kg-1 body weight, i.p.); G2: anesthesia+EA10Hz EAc and G3: anesthesia+EA100Hz EAc). EAc stimulation was delivered for 30 min at 10 mA at selected acupoints. Blood and tissue (kidney, liver) samples were collected at the end of the EAc application (n=6, T30) and 30 minutes later (n=6, T60) for biochemical analysis. G1 samples were collected at the same timepoints. ANOVA followed by Tukey's Multiple Comparison Test was used for statistical analyses. RESULTS: Glycemia decreased significantly (p<0.001) in G2/G3 rats in all timepoints. Kidney and liver lactate concentrations decreased significantly (p>0.001) in G2/G3 rats at T-60 and at T30 timepoints in G2 compared with G1 rats. Lactacedemia decreased significantly at T30 timepoint in G2 compared with G1 rats. G1/G3 tissue lactate levels were not different. CONCLUSIONS: Electroacupuncture (10 Hz) applied to St-36 and CV-12 acupoints decreases glycemia and lactacedemia and liver and kidney lactate concentrations. We hypothesize that the decrease in lactate levels may be related to greater energy production due to enhanced lactate to pyruvate conversion.

OASI: A Brazilian Observatory Dedicated to the Study of Small Solar System Bodies—Some Results on NEO's Physical Properties

International audienceThe distribution of professional observatories around the world is quite biased toward the Northern Hemisphere, and this tendency is even more pronounced when considering those dedicated only to the study of small solar system bodies. In the Southern Hemisphere, the IMPACTON project deployed the Observatório Astronômico do Sertão de Itaparica (OASI), dedicated to the observation of minor bodies of the solar system with emphasis on Near-Earth Objects (NEOs). The observatory is located at the county of Itacuruba, in the Pernambuco State of Brazil, and operate a 1 m Cassegrain telescope. Here, we present a complete characterization of the OASI instruments and the sky conditions during the first eight years of operations. The limiting magnitudes are determined in the different available filters. The median seeing results to be 1"22, with a higher number of photometric nights from April to October. We also give an overview of the results obtained from the OASI observations and discuss them in the light of similar data from the literature. In particular, the rotational periods of 23 NEOs, and the spin directions and shapes of 9 NEOs, have been determined for the very first time using our observations. Analyzing rotational periods, sizes and taxonomic classification from the literature and OASI, we conclude that the fast rotating NEOs are predominantly S-type objects. However, rotational periods obtained at the OASI and with similar value from LCDB database allowed to identify the first fast rotator C-type NEO: asteroid 436724. With an estimated tensile strength as low as 0.5 KPa, this asteroid allows us to suggest that it defines the border between the C- and S-type fast rotators in the size versus period diagram. Although this hypothesis is based on a very small sample it is compatible with all presently available data. Only new observations, however, can prove if this hypothesis is correct
