This study describes the delineation of appropriate sites for aquaculture using remote sensing, GPS and GIS. A 1996 composite Landsat TM image covering the south-western part of Bangladesh was used to identify water bodies, the extent of brackish water and associated land use features in the image. The Remote Sensing image was complemented by digitised secondary data from a range of sources, including hard copy maps to produce a GIS database which included environmental layers such as water bodies, rivers, soils, land use, temperature, rainfall, salinity and pH. The database also included infrastructural issues, such as roads, railways, processing plants, towns and cities. A series of GIS models were developed in order to identify and prioritise the most suitable areas for freshwater prawn, tilapia and carp and brackish water shrimp and crab farming. A range of scenarios for land allocations were used to develop a series of resource use models linked to likely production outcomes. Global warming and accelerated sea level rise is considered in the study area with different sea level rise scenarios of 50, 100, 150 and 200cm. The consequence of land losses and displacement of the population from the area in different situations is discussed. The economic characteristics of shrimp farming and alternative land uses in the Khulna region were also considered. Five land use options were studied based on economic output and job potential. Among these, brackish water shrimp and crab culture, moderately saline tolerant tilapia and prawn culture, fresh water carp culture and traditional rice production systems, and fresh water prawn culture performed best followed by brackish water shrimp and crab culture. This study showed the extent of potential for aquaculture in the Khulna region and further demonstrates the usefulness of GIS as an aquaculture-planning tool. Model programming was also found to be very useful tool to enabling regenerating of multiple scenarios very quickly. Overall, GIS modelling associated with remote sensing has great potential for informed decision-making in aquatic production systems and optimising management of natural resources in a region where they are already under considerable pressure. The implications for use of these systems in reducing land use conflict and sector planning for the region are discussed

Effects of integrated weed management practices on the performance of boro rice cultivars

    Get PDF
An experiment was conducted during the period from November 2016 through May 2017 to evaluate the effect of integrated weed management practices on weed suppression and on the performance of boro rice cultivars. The experiment consisted of two cultivars viz., BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 along with eight different weed management practices. Cultivar did not exert any significant effect on weed density and dry weight. Integrated weed management practices exerted significant effect on weed density and dry weight. The highest weed dry weight was observed in no weeding treatment and lowest one was recorded in application of pre-emergence herbicide followed by one hand weeding at 35 DAT. BRRI dhan28 × no weeding treatment produced the highest weed dry weight and BRRI dhan28 × application of pre-emergence herbicide followed by one HW produced the lowest weed dry weight at different DATs. BRRI dhan28 produced higher grain and straw yields than BRRI dhan29. The highest grain yield was obtained from application of pre-emergence herbicide followed by one hand weeding at 35 DAT. BRRI dhan28 × application of pre-emergence herbicide followed by one HW at 35 DAT produced the highest grain yield and the lowest grain yield was resulted from BRRI dhan28 × no weeding treatment. From the study it may be concluded that BRRI dhan28 × application of pre-emergence herbicide followed by one HW at 35 DAT may be recommended for controlling weeds effectively and for getting the highest grain yield in boro rice

Trend Analysis of the Costing of Denim Wash: A Study on Bangladeshi Washing Industries

    Get PDF
Denim industry is one of the largest in the global market due to its exotic fashion trend. Bangladesh is the largest exporter of denim products over the European market and just after China in worldwide production. Fashion sense in denim fabric is drastically increasing due to the introduction of multiple washing methods. It is a type of fabric finishing treated in a different way for the change of appearance. This paper focuses on the denim washing cost trend within the year 2010 to 2018, and it aims to find out various consequences to analyze the market status of denim washing. The study uses the primary data collected from ten leading denim washing factories in Bangladesh. The study shows that, around 2010, the trend of dry washing processes was not so familiar. Hence, around 2015, there was an extensive practice executed which dominates the conventional wet washing technologies. On the contrary, process like sandblasting got banned from around 2013 because of its harmful effects on workers and users. Besides, various expensive wet washing technologies like acid wash, stone enzyme wash, towel wash, brightener treatment, optical wash, etc. has been incorporated to provide quality washing effects. This paper shows the costing trend of different wash technologies. This is because the majority of the dry and wet wash technologies became more expensive with time gradually due to the increase in labor cost, utility costs, chemical, and process costs. Furthermore, it also shows that some new technologies, like laser technology, which provided effective cost with reasonable quality through the initial investments, are high. The paper gives a prediction for the upcoming trend of denim washing as well as the cost of the technologies

Synthesis and Structural Analysis of Double Layered Ni-Mg-Al Hydrotalcite Like Catalyst

    Get PDF
AbstractHydrotalcites are double layered lamellar clays. It has high surface area and different types of active sites can be fused on its surface this make hydrotalcites an ideal structure for hetero generous catalytic reactions. In this article synthesis of Ni-Mg-Al hydrotalcite by coprecipitation is discussed alongwith its characterization. The hydrotalcite formation is verified by powder XRD. FTIR and BET characterization is carried out to understand the structural characteristics of the material and its possible use as a catalyst. High surface area with large porosity and a consistent atomic percentages was measured during these analysis

Factors Affecting the Stock Price Movement: A Case Study on Dhaka Stock Exchange

Stock market is the mirror of the economy of any country. The strength of the economy reflects in the stock market numeric value. After crisis and fall down in different time over years Bangladesh Stock Market is going to settle in a slow speed. Investors are hoping a strong stock market and management beyond political influential and invincible hands. There may exist hundred or thousand causes and events to bring effect on stock price in the capital market of Bangladesh. The study has selected 17 variables which appear to be effective for the movement of stock price in Bangladesh capital market. From the 17 variables through SPSS dimension reduction (or factor analysis) the study got 5 core factors which affect the stock price. The obtained factors are: Industry Performance, Market Influences, Company Performance, Investor Decision, and Financial Consideration. Also to see the effect of selected variable on stock price movement, one variable – EPS is tested with stock price to see the effect. The result came that EPS is highly correlated to stock price movement in the capital market. As we have got different factors can affect the stock price movement. But investor should protect himself from the bad result of these factors. For this, before and after in stock market business the investors should consider about three main things which are acknowledged fully with company information & performance, risk management and continuous monitoring of stock performance. Keywords: Dhaka Stock Exchange, Fundamental factors, Ideal Price of Stock, EPS, Stock Price, Stock Price Movement

Understanding the Performance of Domestic Biodigesters in Bangladesh: A Study from Household Level Survey

    Get PDF
Biogas can be an important alternative energy source for the sustainable development of the energy sector. To understand the performance of the family-size biodigester in Bangladesh, a household level survey on randomly selected 360 biodigester adopters was conducted. It is evident from the study that adoption of biodigester at the household level is economically and environmentally viable. Most of the biodigesters were constructed for single household and production of biogas was sufficient for cooking for single household. About 35% of biodigesters generated surplus gas from which they earned money by selling the surplus gas. About 91% of the biodigesters were feed with cow dung, one of the optimal biogases producing substrates, which has easy access in their own households. The factor analysis suggests that the most important factors to make biodigester economically viable are: capacity of biodigester, availability of substrates, amount of investment for biodigester, and economic benefits derived from biodigester.
