A land of milk and honey with streets paved with gold: do emigrants have over-optimistic expectations about incomes abroad?
Millions of people emigrate every year in search of better economic and social
opportunities. Anecdotal evidence suggests that emigrants may have over-optimistic
expectations about the incomes they can earn abroad, resulting in excessive
migration pressure, and in disappointment amongst those who do migrate. Yet there
is almost no statistical evidence on how accurately these emigrants predict the
incomes that they will earn working abroad. In this paper we combine a natural
emigration experiment with unique survey data on would-be emigrantsâ probabilistic
expectations about employment and incomes in the migration destination. Our
procedure enables us to obtain moments and quantiles of the subjective distribution
of expected earnings in the destination country. We find a significant underestimation
of both unconditional and conditional labor earnings at all points in the
distribution. This under-estimation appears driven in part by potential migrants
placing too much weight on the negative employment experiences of some
migrants, and by inaccurate information flows from extended family, who may be
trying to moderate remittance demands by understating incomes
Review of ride quality technology needs of industry and user groups
A broad survey of ride quality technology state-of-the-art and a review of user evaluation of this technology were conducted. During the study 17 users of ride quality technology in 10 organizations representing land, marine and air passenger transportation modes were interviewed. Violation of Kohler's rule by the magnetoresistance of a quasi-two-dimensional organic metal
The interlayer magnetoresistance of the quasi-two-dimensional metal
-(BEDT-TTF)KHg(SCN) is considered. In the temperature range
from 0.5 to 10 K and for fields up to 10 tesla the magnetoresistance has a
stronger temperature dependence than the zero-field resistance. Consequently
Kohler's rule is not obeyed for any range of temperatures or fields. This means
that the magnetoresistance cannot be described in terms of semiclassical
transport on a single Fermi surface with a single scattering time. Possible
explanations for the violations of Kohler's rule are considered, both within
the framework of semi-classical transport theory and involving incoherent
interlayer transport. The issues considered are similar to those raised by the

User evaluation of ride technology research
The 23 organizations queried represent government, carrier, and manufacturing interests in air, marine, rail, and surface transportation systems. Results indicate a strong need for common terminology and data analysis/reporting techniques. The various types of ride criteria currently in use are discussed, particularly in terms of their respective data base requirements. A plan of action is proposed for fulfilling the ride technology needs identified by this study
Addressing Ethical Issues in Studying Menâs Traumatic Stress
Like many human experiences, traumatic stress is highly gendered. Over the past several decades, a sub-stantial number of empirical studies have explored ethical issues in traumatic stress research. However, these studies have typically reported female samples or failed to account for the influence of gender in their analyses of mixed-sex samples. By extension, ethical issues that are relevant to male participants in traumatic stress research are poorly understood. After briefly exploring why the vulnerabilities of male participants are under-explored in traumatic stress research, this article highlights many ethical issues that are important to address when men participate in traumatic stress research, concluding with some sugges-tions for how these might be taken up to advance the field

Developing theory-informed interventions to implement evidence into practice: a systematic approach using the Theoretical Domains Framework
Background: There is little systematic operational guidance about how best to develop complex interventions to reduce the gap between practice and evidence. This article is one in a series of articles documenting the development and use of the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) to advance the science of implementation research.
Methods: The intervention was developed considering three main components: theory, evidence, and practical issues. We used a four-step approach, consisting of guiding questions, to direct the choice of the most appropriate components of an implementation intervention: Who needs to do what, differently? Using a theoretical framework, which barriers and enablers need to be addressed? Which intervention components (behaviour change techniques and mode(s) of delivery) could overcome the modifiable barriers and enhance the enablers? And how can behaviour change be measured and understood?
Results: A complex implementation intervention was designed that aimed to improve acute low back pain management in primary care. We used the TDF to identify the barriers and enablers to the uptake of evidence into practice and to guide the choice of intervention components. These components were then combined into a cohesive intervention. The intervention was delivered via two facilitated interactive small group workshops. We also produced a DVD to distribute to all participants in the intervention group. We chose outcome measures in order to assess the mediating mechanisms of behaviour change.
Conclusions: We have illustrated a four-step systematic method for developing an intervention designed to change clinical practice based on a theoretical framework. The method of development provides a systematic framework that could be used by others developing complex implementation interventions. While this framework should be iteratively adjusted and refined to suit other contexts and settings, we believe that the four-step process should be maintained as the primary framework to guide researchers through a comprehensive intervention development process
To boldly gulp: standard metabolic rate and boldness have context-dependent influences on risk-taking to breathe air in a catfish
The African sharptooth catfish Clarias gariepinus has bimodal respiration, it has a suprabranchial air-breathing organ alongside substantial gills. We used automated bimodal respirometry to reveal that undisturbed juvenile catfish (N=29) breathed air continuously in normoxia, with a marked diurnal cycle. Air breathing and routine metabolic rate (RMR) increased in darkness when, in the wild, this nocturnal predator forages. Aquatic hypoxia (20% air saturation) greatly increased overall reliance on air breathing. We investigated whether two measures of risk taking to breathe air, namely absolute rates of aerial O2 uptake (MÌO2,air) and the percentage of RMR obtained from air (%MÌO2,air), were influenced by individual standard metabolic rate (SMR) and boldness. In particular, whether any influence varied with resource availability (normoxia versus hypoxia) or relative fear of predation (day versus night). Individual SMR, derived from respirometry, had an overall positive influence on MÌO2,air across all contexts but a positive influence on %MÌO2,air only in hypoxia. Thus, a pervasive effect of SMR on air breathing became most acute in hypoxia, when individuals with higher O2 demand took proportionally more risks. Boldness was estimated as time required to resume air breathing after a fearful stimulus in daylight normoxia (Tres). Although Tres had no overall influence on MÌO2,air or %MÌO2,air, there was a negative relationship between Tres and %MÌO2,air in daylight, in normoxia and hypoxia. There were two Tres response groups, âboldâ phenotypes with Tres below 75 min (N=13) which, in daylight, breathed proportionally more air than âshyâ phenotypes with Tres above 115 min (N=16). Therefore, individual boldness influenced air breathing when fear of predation was high. Thus, individual energy demand and personality did not have parallel influences on the emergent tendency to take risks to obtain a resource; their influences varied in strength with context
Fish swimming in schools save energy regardless of their spatial position
For animals, being a member of a group provides various advantages, such as reduced vulnerability to predators, increased foraging opportunities and reduced energetic costs of locomotion. In moving groups such as fish schools, there are benefits of group membership for trailing individuals, who can reduce the cost of movement by exploiting the flow patterns generated by the individuals swimming ahead of them. However, whether positions relative to the closest neighbours (e.g. ahead, sided by side or behind) modulate the individual energetic cost of swimming is still unknown. Here, we addressed these questions in grey mullet Liza aurata by measuring tail-beat frequency and amplitude of 15 focal fish, swimming in separate schools, while swimming in isolation and in various positions relative to their closest neighbours, at three speeds. Our results demonstrate that, in a fish school, individuals in any position have reduced costs of swimming, compared to when they swim at the same speed but alone. Although fish swimming behind their neighbours save the most energy, even fish swimming ahead of their nearest neighbour were able to gain a net energetic benefit over swimming in isolation, including those swimming at the front of a school. Interestingly, this energetic saving was greatest at the lowest swimming speed measured in our study. Because any member of a school gains an energetic benefit compared to swimming alone, we suggest that the benefits of membership in moving groups may be more strongly linked to reducing the costs of locomotion than previously appreciated
