    Traffic Ticker

    Get PDF
The Traffic Ticker is a web-based tool developed for use by INDOT to monitor interstate conditions in real-time. Based in crowdsourced probe vehicle data, it is linked to a variety of other tools to provide powerful monitoring and after action review capability. The advantages of this tool are demonstrated in case studies spanning winter operations, interstate crashes, and the I-65 N detour route in August 2015

While working in a small independent special school, this writer developed an animal curriculum for four emotionally disturbed boys with another teacher. The teaching of this curriculum took place from March to June of the school year 77-78. This independent study is a description and analysis of the animal curriculum done with special students

Crossing the threshold: What are the experiences of male learners transitioning into higher education from an enabling course?

When mature-age students return to study within higher education, they are presented with opportunities for life changing experiences. Many more students who are mature-age and from diverse backgrounds are now commencing university studies as part of the widening participation phenomenon. While quantitative data are readily available concerning these students, less well known are the lived experiences of the learners who undertake this journey. The focus of this study is an exploration of the experiences of one such group of learners, namely mature-age males entering university through an enabling pathway. Older males often return to education in order to improve their job prospects. This was the case for a group of 10 mature-age males who lived in what was once a traditional blue-collar city, “Westbeach”, undergoing economic transformation. Using qualitative methodology in the form of a narrative case study allowed for the in-depth exploration of the experiences of these participants. The thesis focussed on the impact of the participants’ social and cultural capitals and identity formation as part of their transition into higher education from an enabling course. Also examined were the educational and personal outcomes of this interaction. Underpinning the research was the theoretical framing of Bourdieu’s social reproduction theory, Mezirow’s transformational learning theory and the concept of possible selves as applied to higher education. The findings show that learners’ habituses and capitals that had developed from their communities and families underwent changes and adaptations, to varying degrees, in order to adjust to their new environment. The participants also experienced changes to their identities in moving from manual work in traditionally male held roles to positioning themselves as university students. Despite the difficulties encountered and the barriers that needed to be overcome, the educational and personal outcomes for these students were predominantly positive. This research has implications for the ways universities adapt to the inclusion of male mature-age students and makes recommendations regarding more flexible approaches. This thesis sheds light onto an under-researched group of learners. Further exploration is now required into the experiences of male students from diverse backgrounds who form part of the rich tapestry that is higher education in Australia

Analysis of a University Bike-Sharing Program and Lessons Learned

    Get PDF
Purdue University initiated a bike-sharing program in August 2015 with 13 locations and 50 bikes. The first 14 weeks of the program saw 15,259 rentals for a total of 22,677 hours. The Purdue sustainable transportation staff partnered with Purdue traffic engineering students to monitor usage trends to identify future investment opportunities and changes to the bike sharing contract. In this session we will present the series of analytics performance measures, management dashboards, and changes initiated as a result of this partnership

A Meta-Analytic Review of Competitive Aggressiveness Research

    Get PDF
Competitive aggressiveness has been at the center of competitive dynamics literature for decades, however there is no consensus as to its primary drivers and performance consequences. Thus, we present the results of a meta-analysis of the antecedents to and consequences of competitive aggressiveness using three aggressiveness components—competitive volume, complexity, and heterogeneity. Leveraging the awareness, motivation, capability framework as a guide of the drivers of competitive aggressiveness, we find that greater organizational size and age, lower slack resources and prior performance, greater market growth, lower market concentration, and more heterogeneous top management teams lead to more aggressive actions. In addition, we found that among the different components of aggressiveness competitive volume improved operating performance

    Leveraging Aircraft Avionics

Airport operations count data are used for a variety of purposes ranging from allocation of Airport Improvement Program (AIP) funding to environmental assessments and budget justification. Operations counts are hard to obtain at small, non-towered airports, which constitute the majority of airports in the United States, and are frequently estimated unscientifically by airport managers. Current acoustic and video counting technology is limited, but with the FAA NextGen mandate for installation of ADS-B Out transponders by Jan. 1, 2020, transponder data is rapidly emerging as a viable data source beyond traditional NextGen applications. To date, the NextGen literature has focused on the use of this technology for navigation, safety, and airspace management. This paper introduces a method of applying ADS-B data to fleet management and airport operations. With a 1090 MHz receiver and appropriate signal processing hardware and software, Mode S and Mode S Extended data can be used to track runway operations and fleet usage in an accurate and cost-effective manner
